MARIANNE WILLIAMSON
Few people, who are not actual rock stars, can
fill a two-thousand seat theater every Monday
night consistently for over a decade. I say ‘actual”,
because Marianne Williamson has Rock
Star status for a lot of people around the world.
Ever since her first book, “A Return to Love”
which was a New York Times best-seller, she
has mesmerized millions with her wisdom,
spiritual teaching and practical advice, leading
to a cult following. Since, she has written over
a dozen books, lectured around the world,
started life-changing charities, raised funds
for countless organizations, spearheaded conventions,
ran for Congress and helped tens of
millions of people far beyond their spiritual
growth and self-improvement.
leaders of our time around the world. Does
it ever become overwhelming for people to
always come to you for answers?
I don’t think of people as “coming to me for
answers,” so much as coming for me for better
questions. And if they don’t know that when
they ask, they know it once I answer.
Your teachings are based on the book, “A
Course in Miracles.” What are a few key
points about the book and its principles that
people should know and/or are misunderstood?
Love is real, and everything else is a huge mortal
illusion. We learn to navigate the realm of
the illusion, or the three dimensions, by learning
to discern between what’s real and what’s
not. We don’t ignore the illusion, but we transform
it through love.
For those who may not attend your lectures
or watch the live-stream, what are a
Modesty aside, how would you describe yourself?
few things lacking or need improvement in
Woman, mother, American.
today’s world from a spiritual perspective?
No one needs to watch my lectures to know
COVER
For many people climate change is
a money burning hoax. But it may
go down as the rebirth of grass
roots activism. Middle America
as I see it, are also gay people and
liberals and even the right leaning
folks, we are all together looking at
ways to save or improve our world.
In 2006, Nobel Laureate and former
US Vice President Al Gore got the
world talking about climate change
with the Academy Award-winning
film "An Inconvenient Truth". Now
he is building a community
of diverse and passionate individuals
who’ve come together to solve the greatest
challenge of our time. They are activists,
cultural leaders, organizers, scientists,
and storytellers committed to building a
sustainable future together. Richard Noble
a local culture warrior was one of the 2,200
Climate Reality Leaders trained in Los
Angeles this week.
Climate Reality Leaders trainees
Noble has a history of fighting for gay
rights and social justice, even famously
walking across the nation for LGBT rights.
His pace or lack of patience at the speed
of change, I often hear him saying "Come
on people its 2018 not 1820" Or at least he
means it that way.
in less than a month for his attendance,
an important hint for budding activists
needing funding. Especially for radical or
new ideas that are not likely recognized
by established fund raising channels.
Again, highlighting the positive outcome
of all the fighting we see on the Internet.
Not #walkaway but #rollyourown. Those
that profess unity need to practice unity
in all they say and do. Our fight
should be with the concept of a
ruling class, not the people who
make up the ruling class.
Climate Reality's mission is to
catalyze a global solution to the
climate crisis. Engaging every
level of society. This means
reaching all the people that feel
left out or ignored on both sides
of the isle. People also care more
about activism when the rest of
us show our appreciation to those
who do it, especially when it is
helping their cause.
The Earth is facing a climate crisis, driven
by fossil fuels. At Climate Reality, they're
here to make urgent action a necessity. In
politics. In business. In every aspect of our
lives. Everywhere, according to their web
Today, he is also a Climate Reality
activist. With a crowd funding mandate
to get there. Noble recently completed
a crowd funding event that raised $560
THE 2018 PALM SPRINGS LBGTQ
FILM FESTIVAL - FILMS FOR ALL
INTERESTS
AdamsArtExpose’
AdamsArtExpose’ ART
This will be the 11th anniversary of the
LBGTQ Film Festival in Palm Springs.
Films on LBGTQ people assist in
demonstrating that we are all human
with the same day to day life needs and
emotions as a people everywhere. Films
with LBGTQ subject matter show that
all aspects of society include people in
the gay community. One of the first
films on a gay politician was the story of
Harvey Milk who was a gay member of
the San Francisco City Council and was
murdered by a fellow politician who
was homophobic. This film was one of
the first to illuminate the unfounded
discrimination, hatred and gross
misunderstanding of LBGTQ people.
LBGTQ films have evolved to provide
a broader landscape of gay, lesbian and
transgender life beyond the topics of
misunderstanding, discrimination,
and repression that has been prevalent
in many films. Unfortunately, the
misunderstanding, and sometimes
hostility still exists, aspects of this
emanates from the current political
administration with a Vice President
who openly states his despise of LBGTQ
people.
The line-up of films this year include
a variety of topics from teens dealing
with their sexuality as in the films,
"Just Friends" and "My Best Friend",
to sexuality in old age in, “Who Will
Save the Roses". Lesbian film topics
are also featured as example, "Dykes,
Camera, Action" about women who
made queer film happen. Transgender
topics include, "Queens" about the
first allowed transgender female
impersonator to be part of the Miss
Continental Pageant. The premier
screening of "The Long Road to
Freedom" a documentary telling the
story of major events in LGBTQ history
as documented in the Advocate over a
50-year history. The film "Dirty, Sexy,
Comics" tells the story of the men who
created the stories and drawings of early
erotic gay comics. Overall there are over
45 films available to please almost any
interest during the 3 days of the festival,
September 20-23. The screenings will
be at the Camelot Theaters in Palm
Springs. Tickets are available from
the Palm Springs Cultural Center,
including an all access pass or Cinema
Six Pack passes or tickets for individual
screenings. The Cinema Diverse
LBGTQ Film Festival promises to
provide a variety of topics for a wide
spectrum of interests.
Led by former US Vice President Al Gore
do it by empowering everyday people to
Together, they add up to a powerful
the answer to that one! We’re living on this
planet in a way that is contrary to who we are.
We put blame before blessing, money before
love, business before our children, greed before
proper stewardship of our planet, and corporate
gain before democracy. There are a few other
things, but those are enough to take us down.
One of your many life-altering quotes I read
all the time is from your first book, A Return
to Love, which starts with, “Our deepest fear
is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest
fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
How does one tackle fear and proceed from a
place of love in practical matters?
In any moment, we have a choice. And in every
moment, we make that choice — either consciously
or unconsciously. We can blame or we
can bless, we can complain or we can rise to the
occasion, we can play victim or we can manifest
strength. It’s always up to us. Love casts out fear
the way light casts out darkness. The problem is
that we’re in the mental habit of choosing fear,
playing small, judging others. Spiritual growth
is a journey of changing our mental habits,
choosing love and casting out fear.
Does anything keep you up at night?
Do I have to tell you his name?
of myself as well known in a particular subculture.
Tell me about your numerous followers, readers
and fans.
I think of my audience — note that’s audience,
not followers, by the way — the way I think of
an AA Meeting. In Alcoholics Anonymous, a
mogul is sitting next to a homeless person but
in that room they’re both just alcoholics. I see
my audience the same way. No matter who you
are outside this room, here you’re seeking the
wisdom of the heart just like the person sitting
next to you. No matter the sex, age, nationality,
politics, or whatever — in this room, we’re all
just lovers of God and seekers of love and forgiveness.
Spirituality is a great equalizer.
You founded Project Angel Food over twenty-five
years ago, an organization that has
served tens of thousands of people since 1983.
What are a few of your other favorite causes
and charities?
Anything that helps women and children
around the world. Women for Women is a
good one, but there are many. There is one recipe
for world peace and it’s this: expand economic
opportunities for women and educational
opportunities for children.
Who are a few spiritual teachers that you turn
to for answers and inspiration?
I started making a list but I got terrified I would
leave someone out. I’ll just say all the people
in the higher consciousness, personal growth
movement who are out there now… I read and
listen to them. But I also think that any great
writer or poet is a spiritual teacher. Any wise
person is a spiritual teacher. It’s amazing where
you can sometimes get answers.
Fabeyonce “Do's and Don't”
We as entertainers must abide by the rules of
drag, Honey!!!!!!!
Now this happens a lot and I hope by all
means that it's not on purpose. So many times,
as an entertainer, we come across a few that
don't seem to care much about hygiene and
appearance and coming out complete.
Do come out looking amazing from head to
toe. Don't come out with a ripped costume. No
perfume, no deodorant, no lashes, no nails etc .
I think being lazy kicks into some girls and in
this business. There is no room for the laziness
of at any time. If you cannot do your makeup,
great, then you better have an amazing costume
to make up for it, if you cannot dance you
better know how to lip-sync for your life and
sell it, but when all fails, and you can't do
either, that's a huge problem.
We all learn and must evolve, but if you’ve been
doing this for years and still haven't bloomed,
something is not connecting.
Now using the excuse that you’re a "camp
queen " is pretty sad and knowing the valley we
live in, we expect greatness from all varieties of
queens and not cutting it as camp won't work.
Makes us all wonder what is really going on.
We support all kinds of drag, but first thing
you would need to do is find yourself and have
confidence in who your character is because if
you don't, then you won't exist.
Do be friendly with others. Do support all local
talent. Do show up in drag and put your name
out there. Do be respectful to all others around
you. Don't be fake. Don’t the cocky. Don't be
big headed. And Don't ever compare yourself
to anyone who has been doing this longer than
you. Learn to be the queen everyone loves and
respects.
I found myself working hard at performing and
naturally I knew exactly who I was and how
my personality was going to be around others.
I worked on me being confident and outgoing
loud and funny. I'm a bit blonde at times but
that's not part of my act, that is just who I am
so. If you know me or get to know me, you’re
going to find out quickly who I am.
I do show respect to all talent who are new or
who have been doing this before me.
Getting to work with so many girls, I run into
many personalities and we have to know how
to accept everyone just the way they are. Being
from the Coachella valley and literally being
the only queen from here, is a bit strange and
hard. I don't have no one to get ready with
or do anything with here, but I do like being
the only queen of Coachella and working all
around town to show the people how to have a
good time.
Now I know this story went in all directions,
but my mind is all over the place I hope you
had a good time reading my story and please
follow me on Facebook under @fabeyonce or
Instagram @fabeyonc_e let me know what you
think and message me about anything you'd
love for me to cover
Once again it was my pleasure writing for you
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
What a week!
Anonymous editorials in the New York Times and a
new book from Bob Woodward of Watergate fame.
And speaking of Watergate, John Dean testified
before the Senate on the corruption then and now.
Reports are coming in that the President is
unhinged, isolated, suspicious and paranoid. Of
course, most of us thought that already but now
Republicans are finally saying it (well some are).
There is even open talk about invoking the 25th
Amendment and removing Trump from office.
Former President Obama is back on the campaign
trail and taking direct aim at President Trump.
Michelle Obama is launching her own tour to get out
the vote. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see should
have been President Al Gore come out to speak.
Democrats look poised to take the house with 10-15
seats to spare and now pundits are saying the Senate,
while difficult, might be in reach. It is up to each of
us to get voters to the polls and to vote. Coachella
Valley Dems are active. I was at the Mary Pickford
Theater this week and voter registration tables were
up and active. It was good to see.
Locally, I must address the growing viciousness
on social media. Facebook is especially bad, but
Twitter, Next Door and others are moving that way
too. Politics has always been a contact sport but one
you could forget about after the election and go have
a beer with a competitor. Not anymore.
Being an elected official for 24 years now, I am used
to people questioning my positions on any number
of topics and giving their opinion. That is valid,
and I enjoy that give and take. Now however it has
become very personal. Even dredging up old news
that the Desert Sun covered intensely. I am speaking
of my personal bankruptcy 9 years ago during the
height of the Great Recession or accusing me of
personal gain off city work, and on and on.
high school students could travel and see various
parts of the world. They skip over the leadership
for LGBTQ rights in the County and Valley, or
immigrant rights or women’s rights.
Do you know why they skip over these things? It’s
because 95% of the people who are on the attack
have 1) never met me, 2) never called me to ask me
anything, 3) never emailed or written me to ask or
3) never even came to a City Council meeting. They
blindly take the word of one or two angry people
who are miserable in their own personal lives that
they must make it unpleasant for anyone else. Seems
like a story line from Washington but it is happening
here.
Sadly, it has now gotten to the point where these
same people are attacking city council candidates
simply because I have endorsed them. Again, they
have never met these candidates, never asked them
anything and amazing enough do not live in the
district that the candidate is running in.
We must bring back civility to our community and
valley. We are a small town where we eat at the
same restaurants and shop at the same grocery store.
We all have families we want to support and see be
successful. We should also strive to be an example
to others of positive community activism and not
divisions.
It doesn’t matter whether or now we agree on
specific issues. It doesn’t matter if we don’t like
specific language someone uses (you can always
block them on Facebook). It does matter that we
communicate honestly, professionally and always
with the desire to raise our city and her residents up
and not tear them down.
Don’t wait until November 6. Start now. Think
positive and start talking positively. You will be
surprised how it will change your attitude.
