2018 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention AWARDS COMMITTEE Tyler Sturdivant, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, SCRN, Chair Awards Committee Members: Tyler Sturdivant, Chair, District 4; Dr. Casey Norris and Anca Whitehouse, District 1 Representatives; Kim Inman Smith, District 2 Representative; Dr. Kathleen Ladner, District 3 Representative; and Lovie McAboy, District 4 Representative. The Awards Committee has five major purposes: • To publicize awards offered. • To actively seek and solicit nominations for awards offered. • To evaluate the nominees for each award and to select winners in each category. • To plan and carry out the awards ceremony held during the Annual Convention. • To review suggestions for new awards, develop criteria and guidelines, and make recommendations to the ASNA Board of Directors. The Awards Committee members are volunteers from the different districts of ASNA. The committee members have evaluated each award assuring that each nominee met the requirements of the award. After this process was complete, the committee used a scoring grid to determine the recipients of the awards. The Awards Committee extends thanks to Charlene Roberson and April Bishop for their continued support and assistance regarding this committee. 60
2018 Alabama State Nurses Association Annual Convention Ethics and Human Rights Committee Annual Report Rosemarie Juergensen, MSN, RN and Bonnie Rausch, BSN, RN, CLNC Co-Chairs ANA has deemed 2018 as the year of Advocacy. Advocacy is the first pillar of the ASNA 2017-2018 vision as a main strategy. The Ethics and Human Rights Committee has spent time and effort to address the growing problems of substandard physical and mental health care, including inadequate nutrition in Alabama prisons and detention centers. The following are Committee Goals: 1. Committee members have been encouraged to educate themselves about the prisons in their districts. 2. A resolution has been submitted to the Governance Committee for approval. 3. To present this resolution at the ASNA’s Annual Fall Convention for approval. 4. To have ASNA advocate for fair and humane access to quality health care in Alabama prisons. 5. For ASNA to use the Alabama Nurse and other publications to increase awareness of these issues in the nursing community. 6. For ASNA to invite community leaders for a panel discussion to talk about the ongoing challenges and needs in the prison system and have it as a CE-offering at the Fall Convention. 7. For ASNA to seek involvement in meetings, forums, and committees to identify ways to improve the physical and mental health care in Alabama jails, prisons, and detention centers. This will remain an ongoing project for the 2018-2019 year. We want to add on a project concerning the treatment and health care including shackling of pregnant incarcerated women in Alabama’s prisons.
