bring out the fact that Mayor Phillip did not<br />

function in the office she was elected, Myra<br />

did. The entire town of Cotton Valley knew<br />

Myra was running the Town Hall. So, the<br />

whites (the select few) were not intimidated<br />

by a “black” woman being mayor, as long as<br />

she was not the one who usurps authority<br />

over them. Ask yourself this question: If<br />

Mayor Comerdis Phillips would have<br />

implemented more of her ideas instead of<br />

allowing Myra to call the shots, how would<br />

things have turned out for her? First of all,<br />

she wouldn’t have been elected a second<br />

term. I doubt very seriously if she would<br />

have made it through the first term. The<br />

same handful of racist citizens of Cotton<br />

Valley tried to initially remove Mayor
