“It's Bittersweet” 

Sometimes, removing yourself from toxic 

situations is the best. 

Being human, we can only handle so much. 

But when you’re put down constantly, called 

names, having people talking about you and 

making up lies, and there's ones you work 

with weekly. 

But I'm better than that and won't let anyone 

get the best of me. I'm learning that no matter 

where you go and who you meet, there will 

always be some trolls that have nothing better 

to do than just that. 

I find myself trying to give advice but not 

taking my own and this time, I'm biting my 

tongue and taking my own advice. (Girl get 

your head in right and keep moving ahead) 

I want to move ahead and be the best I can 

be and not be like some of the rest and talk 

down about everyone and make people feel 

uncomfortable. 

Fabeyonce is better than that and I'm much 

classier than that. My love for everyone is the 

same as when I started this drag career and 

will continue to be the same. I always tell my 

friends and family I'm here for you and I'm 

just a call away and that goes for everyone. 

care of me, love me, pamper me, treat myself. 

I need to stop worrying about small things 

that don't matter and don't benefit me. What 

I can say is the people get me through that 

they’ve helped me by showing love to me, 

appreciating me, and my art. The feeling is 

overwhelming and just amazing what a small 

valley this is and I'm thankful to have met the 

people I meet along the way. 

One thing I’d like to tell you all is love one 

another, don't hurt each other, be there for 

each other, care for each other, and don't fight 

about things that will ruin a friendship for 

life and never be able to have moments like 

the past again. 

The time you spent and memories you 

make will all go down the drain and all for 

nothing. Be supportive of your friends and 

family. Never be jealous or bitter about the 

success they might have. Be you and be the 

shining star that you are. I'm lucky to have 

a drag family that cares about each other 

and supports our endeavors. Never be bitter 

about anything we do.

The tyranny of Trump has increased 

in recent months. The increasing 

criminality of his actions continues to 

be ignored as his tweets and rallies filled 

with false statements and lies fill the 

media. It has become almost accepted 

that the President is a xenophobic, racist, 

misogynistic, prevaricating, criminal. 

His actions are being supported by 

most members of the Republican party 

because he is effective in getting much 

of their divisive measures passed with 

a majority in the House and Senate. 

One of the best examples is the recent 

confirmation of Brett Kavenaugh to 

the Supreme Court following a very 

obstructed and manipulated series of 

so-called hearings. Much of this fiasco 

was manipulated by Mitch McConnell 

Paul von Hindenburg, who through 

manipulation given by the Weimar 

Constitution, as president of Germany 

in 1925, destroyed democratic norms, 

and allowed the rise of Hitler. Much 

of this same kind of manipulation and 

attempted restriction of freedom of the 

press by Trump and his allies, distorts 

and creates dysfunction of democratic 

values. Example number one, restriction 

of voting being blatantly attempted 

in many Southern states. This is only 

number one of the dozens of dirty tricks 

and illegal maneuvers that are being daily 

heaped on the public. 


Artist are effective in exposing these 

divisive and criminal actions through the 

visual and performing arts. Protests with 

art can make them less alarming and a 

method off expression that people can 

get behind, attend, and join. Examples 

of this has been documented by the 

book, "Beautiful Trouble". In this book 

is documented how the arts in various 

ways made the resistance in recent 

years more creative and effective. Not 

only the graphic aspects of artists were 

employed but also, pranks, stunts, flash 

mobs and encampments brought about 

changes in the balance of power and the 

recognition of the average real people 

who were not being acknowledged. "Art 

makes activism more compelling and 

sustainable". 

Examples of some of the visual art 

activism is included in this article, other 

methods of activism can be found in talk 

shows, such as the Daily Show hosted 

by Trevor Noah, and the Late Show with 

Stephen Colbert, and Saturday Night 

Live, are just a few of the entertainment 

venues that are part of activism. 

Musicians are also in the ranks of 

activists, Bono, Paul McCartney, Freddy 

Mercury, and Joan Baez has also returned 

to activism from near retirement. 

The Center For Artistic Activism 

promotes activism as a non-violent 

approach aimed at persuading by 

creating moving experiences the prompt 

people to question the world as it is 

and imagine it as a world as it could 

be. The have published a booklet which 

describes how artistic activism works.

This can be useful not only in the mid 

term election but for the coming years in 

getting rid of the scourge of Trump and 

his tyrannical allies in our politics.

Hopper: Stories from A Life Lived 

In and Out of the Movies “one 

of the best books of 2016.” How 

does it feel to be praised for your 

writing after having won numerous 

acting awards? 

My grandfather Melvyn Douglas 

always wanted me to be a writer. 

After reading some stories I had 

written, he gave me a few books for 

inspiration. One of my favorites was 

Dorothy Parker. That led me down 

the path of really wanting to be a 

writer. What I tried to do was not 

so much “write” but just tell good 

stories. That’s what a writer/director 

does anyway. I love acting, and I 

want to continue acting! My grandfather 

won his first Oscar at age 63, 

his second Oscar at 80! I’m a character 

actress, so there will always 

be time for me to pursue great acting 

roles, but my role as a writer is 

obviously more personal.

There were a couple stories that 

did not make the first book. They 

were slightly creepy, or verging 

on black humor, and I didn’t feel 

they fitted in the narrative, so we 

pulled them out. This lead me to 

thinking-because I always liked 

stories about the dark nature 

of suburbia like Cheever, or the 

dark humor of Evelyn Waugh or 

Dorothy Parker that maybe the second 

book could be all outrageous 

things that ever happened to me 

with a decidedly wicked comic edge. 

The phrase comes from something 

Peter Bogdanovich used to say to 

me before every take, “Remember 

Illeana…this never happened”. I 

started to think about all the things 

that I wished had never happened 

to me. I thought that might be a 

great premise for the next book. Do 

the darker things that have happened 

to us make us appreciate the 

good things?

population in La Quinta and the valley, he is 

dedicated to his city and works hard. 

Robert Radi 

Robert is truly the definition of a gentleman. He 

is president of a management and strategic policy 

consulting firm. He serves on the Sunline Transit 

Board. He is not shy about sharing his opinion but 

win or lose, after the vote he is ready to move on to 

the next issue. 

Palm Desert – 


Sabby Jonathan 

Sabby is a one term member of the Council and 

currently the Mayor. He chairs CVAG’s homelessness 

committee. A CPA by education and training he is 

instrumental in keeping Palm Desert fiscally strong. 

He is a strong advocate for his city. 

Matt Monica 

Matt served on the Desert Sands Unified School 

District Board of Trustees for many years. He is 

looking to move to the City Council. He stands out 

as an advocate and voice for his policy concerns. He 

will stir things up for a City many thinks need to 

think out of the box. 

At this juncture I must add at this point that I 

absolutely love Jan Harnik. She is hard worker for 

the City and the Valley. She is one of the smartest 

council members here locally. I made the hard 

decision not to recommend her reelection due to 

how she ran her most recent campaign for County 

Supervisor. She would have done a great job in 

Riverside, but sadly chose to run a very negative and 

some say racist campaign against Manny Perez. I 

know that this is not the Jan I know, and I hope she 

finds that person again. 

Desert Health Care District –Zone 4 – 

Shelley Kaplan 

Shelley is a councilman in Cathedral City and has 

chosen to step away from that position to run for the 

Health Care District Board. Health care has always 

been a passion for him and this will be a good fit and 

a HUGE help to the district. 

Desert Water Agency –Jim Cioffi 

Jim has served with distinction on the Agency Board. 

Understands the needs for water and the needs of 

the Agency. An architect, professionally, he has 

surprised many with his grasp of the issues facing the 

Agency. 

Pat Oygar 

Pat is an expert in water policy. She has served many 

years on the Agency Board. She knows better that 

any other water board member from the valley’s four 

water boards how things work and what is needed.

John Powell 

Like Pat Oygar, John is the east valley expert on water 

policy. He understands the needs of both farmers 

and residents. He serves on subcommittee of CVWD 

board members and Cathedral City councilmembers. 

He jumps in and does the work needed. 


Castulo Estrada 

Bright, articulate, young and full of energy he has 

brought a new vitality to the Agency. He represents 

the Coachella area of the district and comes with the 

knowledge of growing up in the valley. He is one of 

our future valley-wide leaders. 

Mission Springs Water District – Board Members – 

Nancy Wright 

Nancy is the expert in the northern most part of 

the valley on water issues. A fierce protector of the 

purity of the water in MSWD territory, she is one of 

the reasons Desert Hot Springs tourism is growing. 

2nd seat – no recommendation
