THE MALVERN veterans
tennis team HAVE
successfully defended
the Shirley Dalziel
Trophy after beating
Mid-Canterbury 10-6 at
Ashburton.
The trophy is the Canterbury
Country tennis
equivalent of the Ranfurly
Shield, and Malvern kept it
after leading five matches
to three following the
men’s and women’s doubles.
The Shirley Dalziel Trophy
was donated in 1995,
and was named in honour
of the former patron of
Canterbury Country Tennis
seniors.
team. She made the most
of her opportunity, scoring
four times during the
tournament.
The 12-year-old, who
has played her club
hockey at Hornby for the
past eight seasons, was
part of the Canterbury
B age-group team until
this season when she was
picked for the Collier
team.
Canterbury beat
Hawke’s Bay 5-0 in the
semi-final, then defeated
Central Otago in the final.
“We played really well
all tournament and our
Team member Rob Potts
said the team won it from
Ellesmere Blue last season
and have since defended
it against all the country
defence was really strong
and we had plenty of
chances to score goals upfront,”
Katie said.
She said she enjoyed her
time being coached by
former Black Sticks’ Cathy
Baker and Jordy Grant.
She also praised her club
coach Matt Cunningham
for improving her skill
level so she could make
the team.
Katie said being part of
the team was a thrill and
she wants to progress her
hockey at Lincoln High
School when she starts
there next year.
