Bexley 1’s V Hartley 1’s
Saturday saw the eagerly anticipated top of the table
clash between Bexley and Hartley, suprisingly I won
the toss for the second week in a row and decided
that on a fairly decent looking wicket we would
have bat. Things didn’t really get off to the way we
would have liked as Min was out second ball caught
at square leg. George then strode to the crease and
he and Greg consilidated before Greg was run out,
Sandeep was caught for not many and then George
was bowled by a ball that turned a mile leaving us
88-4. Jack and Riles then tried to reconsolidate, and
did so sucessfully to an extent Riles finishing with
35 and Jack 50 as Bexley finished their 50 overs
on 219 All out!! We knew that early wickets would
be the key and unfortunately this wasn’t the case
and when we thought we had the breakthrough the
umpire seemed to be the only person in the ground
that didn’t hear the edge from Hockers. Hartley continued
to accumulate the runs and we found wickets
hard to come by, and they reached the total 4 down
in the 45th over, Riles the pick of the bowlers with
1-30 off his 10. The result puts us 14 points behind
Hartley and moves us down to 4th place but it is all
still very tight and all to play for!
1st XI suffer disappointing home
defeat to Hartley
Hartley IIs V Bexley IIs
Thankfully Hartley won the toss and elected to bat.
We got off to an excellent start with Joe Russell
clean bowling their number 1 with the 3rd ball of the
game, Tom Scorgie then got in on the act and bowled
their other opener cheaply. Joe followed this by taking
the wicket of their Skipper with a magnificent
caught and bowled. At this stage we were bowling
and fielding excellently and Hartley were reeling at
19-3, with the white Balotelli finding his voice in the
field things were tough going for the oppo.
Joe took his 3rd and final wicket, bowled again with
a classic slower ball after which he ran down the
wicket and told the departing batsman that he was
much too clever for him! A brief partnership of 30
was then ended with a change of bowling bringing
on Furzy who dismissed their number 6 caught behind
courtesy of an excellent diving catch by Archie
Woodgate…… sorry I meant Richie Barclay.
Joe finished with magnificent figures of 15-5-30-3
bowling his overs straight through. This brought
about the introduction of Jas and Pasky into the attack
who between them took the last 5 wickets for
12 runs in 10 overs leaving Hartley all out for 103
and giving us an extra 8 overs. Pasky took 3-3 and
Jas 2-9. Jas has now taken 31 wickets in the season
so far and is still 8 wickets ahead of his nearest rival.
Now for the hard part. Our chase started magnificently
with Murts and Richie taking us along to 30-0
off 6 before a collapse of ridiculous proportions saw
us drop from 30-0 to 40-5 in 5 overs. What followed
was a very hard fought 50 partnership between Stan
Wells and Ian Mobey patiently defending against
their 2 spinners and waiting for the bad ball. When
Mobes was caught behind for 28 we only needed 15
to win which was duly knocked off at a run a ball
by Pasky who clearly doesn’t understand the phrase
“get your head down”.
In amongst all this was Stanley Wells, my rock of
Gibraltar. His patient 21 not out off 48 balls batting
at No.3 was simply sensational. So often this year
Stan has been the stand out batter and I am glad his
efforts this week were rewarded with a victory.
Bexley 3’s V Blackheath
The 3s arrived at Loring knowing nothing but 20
points would suffice against bottom of the league
Blackheath. Having lost three players and an umpire
in 24 hours - it seemed like a tough ask. However, a
change in changing rooms signalled a change in fortunes
in an afternoon that saw many a first. The first
time over 200 runs had been scored in an innings at
loring in 2012, the first league game of the season
for Sully, the first time Deano has run a three and by
the looks of things the first time their number 8 had
ever held a bat (a wicket is a wicket, Bondy).
So Bexley were to bat first and a promising start
from Moore and Richie set us up nicely. Unfortunately
both gave their wickets away cheaply and
there was an obvious need to dig in. Stroudley and
Griggs started to build a partnership until Aiden
gave his wicket away cheaply after a promising start.
Webster showed his experience by digging in and
occupying the crease with an important 17. Stroudley
went on to score 56 and Peters added a quick fire
25 to finish on an impressive 212/9.
Although confident Bexley knew they would still
have to perform to get the win. The opening pair
of Bond and O’Sullivan looked a class above the
Blackheath batsmen finishing with 2 and 4 wickets
respectively. Newell and Griggs picked up one each
to finish them off for 92 after one of the most boring
number 11 innings ever seen (5 from 55 balls).
So 20 points the target, 20 points achieved. Another
big game this week as we take on Blackheath City of
London. A win would put us in a comfortable position
for a solid finish to the season. The same attitude
and desire will definitely be required.
