Tanners can’t keep up with Reading
By Anne Marie Tobin
READING — The No. 6 Peabody football
team got off to a disastrous start Friday
night against No. 3 Reading in the quarterfinals
of the North Division 2 playoffs at
John Hollingsworth Field. The Tanners battled
to the bitter end, but never recovered,
falling to the Middlesex League Liberty
League champion Rockets, 35-21, at John
Hollingsworth Field.
The Rockets got off a dream start,
scoring on their first three possessions to
build a quick 21-0 lead after one quarter of
play, while Peabody went three-and-out on
its first three drives to set the tone for the
evening.
Reading needed only eight seconds to
take a lead just two minutes into the first
quarter on a trick pass play, from running
back Jake D’Agostino to Pat Conroy (the
first of his 3 TDs) , to take a 7-0 lead.
It went from bad to worse for Peabody on
the ensuing kickoff. Intended to be a squib
kick, the ball bounced off a Peabody player
and was recovered by Reading’s Josh
Williamson at the Reading 44. Seven plays
later, Conroy ran it in from the 6-yard line to
double the Rockets’ lead to 14-0.
After forcing another three-and-out,
Reading needed only eight plays to drive 48
yards for its third score of the quarter, this
one on an 18-yard touchdown pass from
quarterback Matt Sannella (105 passing
yards, 70 rushing yards) to Domenic
Masucci, and the route was on.
“You cannot have that kind of a start,
falling behind 21-0, in a playoff game,” said
Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt. “We dug
ourselves too big a hole right off the bat,
going three-and-out on our first three possessions,
and had that squib kick bounce off
our player so we were doomed from the beginning.
They could play relaxed with that
kind of lead and that’s not what you want
in a playoff game. You want to put yourself
in a position where the pressure is on both
teams, and we did not do that.”
Trailing 28-0 with less than four minutes
to go in the first half, Peabody finally found
some offensive rhythm and got on the board
with only seven seconds left in the half. The
Tanners drove 66 yards in 13 plays, the final
play being a 5-yard rush into the end zone
by Colby Therrien (4 carries, 19 yards).
Austin Leggett tacked on the extra point to
make it 28-7 at the half.
The Rockets started the third quarter
with their foot on the gas and, still in hurry-up
mode, needed less than a minute to
Nelson on league’s
all-rookie team
By Anne Marie Tobin
Former Peabody High soccer
standout Emily Nelson has
been named to the America
East Conference All-Rookie
Team. Nelson finished the
regular season second on the
team in goals (7) and points
(16). She started 19 of the River
Hawks’ 20 games, helping the
River Hawks to qualify for the
America East Tournament for
the first time in program history.
Nelson was one of just two
players in America East to tally
three goals in a single game this
season.
“Emily scoring seven goals
in her first year – there’s not a
rookie in the conference that
scored more goals,” River
Hawks’ interim head coach
Mira Novak said. “I’m delighted
for her and her growth
throughout the year because
she helped us get to where we
are now, not just with the goals,
but with her consistent performances,
and I know that she’ll
only get better.”
This past Sunday, the No.
4 River Hawks traveled to
top-seeded Stony Brook for
a semifinal showdown in the
conference tournament. Their
Cinderella season continued
as Lowell pulled off the upset
of the tournament, defeating
the Seawolves, 2-0, to punch
its ticket to the America East
Championship game against the
University of Albany in Albany
on Sunday, No. 4. Nelson
helped secure the win as she
set up the River Hawks’ second
goal in the 88th minute of play.
Should Lowell defeat the
third-seeded Great Danes,
the River Hawks will secure
their first automatic bid to the
Division 1 NCAA national
championship in program history
since making the leap up
from Division 2 in 2013.
Lowell opened the tournament
with a dramatic 0-0
win over No. 5 University of
Vermont in penalty kicks (4-3)
on Thursday, Oct. 25 at home.
bump the lead to 35-7 on a 9-yard rush by
Conway.
Peabody gamely fought back in the
fourth quarter. With 4:29 left, sophomore
Kyle Maglione made it 35-14 with a 31-
yard punt return. Then, after the defense
forced just the second Rockets’ punt of
the game, quarterback Alex DeNisco (
3-of-7, 27 yards, TD), in for starter Matt
Jandrisevits (2-of-5, 25 yards, 7 carries for
23 yards) who suffered a knee injury in the
third quarter, found Declan Russell over the
middle from 10 yards out to make it 35-21
with under a minute to go.
“I don’t know whether Matt got hit
straight on or from the side, but he’s a tough
kid and hopefully will be back next week,”
said Bettencourt.
Angel Paulino was a bright spot for the
Tanners, picking up 69 rushing yards on 18
carries, while Luis Guridys picked up 16
yards on three carries.
Tyler Norman did a nice job filling in for
the injured Jake Sousa at linebacker. The
Tanners were also missing defensive back
Dylan Peluso.
“Anytime you have the heart of your
defense on the sidelines, that hurts,”
Bettencourt said. “Tyler did a very good job
considering he has been playing a totally
different position all years and had only two
days to learn how to play middle linebacker.
He showed great leadership by volunteering
to switch.”
Reading came into the game on a fivegame
winning streak, and had scored 28 or
more points in five of its seven games, and
30 or more points in four games.
Bettencourt said he knew going into the
game that the Tanners had their work cut
out for themselves.
“We knew they were a very good team capable
of putting a lot of points on the board,
so we knew that our best shot at winning
the game would be to keep our offense on
the field and their offense off,” Bettencourt
said. “That didn’t happen. All due respect to
Danvers and Beverly, Reading is probably
the best team we have faced this year.
“We knew we were behind the 8-ball
coming in to the tournament and we had
no one to blame but ourselves. We needed
to compose ourselves to handle adversity,
now we have to rally and finish the season
as strong as we can
The Rockets advanced to the semifinals
where they will travel to No. 2 Lincoln-
Sudbury next week (TBD), which defeated
Masconomet, 42-28, Friday night.
