PAGE 2 - SOUTHEAST MESSENGER - November 4, 2018 www.columbusmessenger.com Madison Christian celebrates its 40th anniversary By Rick Palsgrove Southeast Editor The seeds of Madison Christian School were sown more than 40 years ago when a group of like minded individuals gathered to make their vision come to life. Speaking at Madison Christian School’s 40th anniversary celebration on Oct. 27, founding school administrator Debbie Ostrander said 100 charter members met in the M.R. Training Center on Bixby Road in 1977 and set these goals: create a church, a Christian school, and recreation center. “All three goals have been accomplished,” said Ostrander. “Forty years ago it was a dream, it’s now a reality.” Madison Christian School located at 3565 Bixby Road in Groveport, began with 15 pre-school students in 1978 and over the years grew into a pre-school to grade 12 school. According to the school’s website, the private Christian school - which is an outreach of Madison Christian Church - has a current enrollment of around 539 students and attracts students from 26 zip codes, 14 other school districts, and four counties. Madison Township Trustee Chairman John Kershner said the school and church have had a positive impact on the township and surrounding community, citing their work with the area food pantry and that church Pastor Paul Barnes also serves as the Madison Township Fire Department chaplain. “The school had an awesome influence on my kids, who attended there,” said Kershner. “The school has a flexible approach to education and provides lots of individual attention to students. Portier said officers remained at or near the school throughout the day and will continue to monitor the school. He said the incident remains an ongoing investigation. Warner said the students involved in the fights were all Groveport Madison students and that, to his knowledge, there were no serious injuries. He also said there was no damage to the new high school building. When asked what will be done to prevent future fights, Warner said, “We met with the staff after school yesterday. We will have more staff in hallways and common areas to supervise class changes. In her letter, Ogden stated district officials take the safety of the students and staff “very seriously.” “We will not tolerate behavior that causes a disruption or has the potential to cause harm or injury,” wrote Ogden. “Students directly involved in any such incident will face severe disciplinary consequences. In addition, Groveport Police arrested students who were directly involved in the fights.” Ogden said the second half of the day concluded without incident. “However, as an added level of precaution, we will have additional administrative staff and police support on campus for the next several days,” wrote Ogden. “We are aware of several social media posts that show the two fights. It is important to keep in mind that of the 1,800 students at Groveport Madison High School, 98 percent of them behaved just as they are expected, and they are just as frustrated with today’s incidents as the rest of us.”
www.columbusmessenger.com Dowler keeps Cruisers looking good By Theresa Garee Staff Writer She leans over to inspect an orange-yellow stain on the front of a band uniform, “Toby, Toby had cheese,” Julie Dowler announced as she opened another travel pack of cleanser and began scrubbing the stain. Dowler has been with the Groveport Madison Marching Cruisers for eight years, six of those as its Uniform Chair. She and her co-chair, Stacey Shelton, oversee the sizing, sewing, and ordering of 125 Marching Cruiser band and color guard uniforms. “I’m only a helper, Julie does everything,” Shelton said. An average day for Dowler starts as a sixth grade school teacher for Columbus City Schools. At about 4 p.m. she picks up her sophomore to get to band practice, where they sometimes can stay until around 10 p.m. Other days include acting as a fundraising and volunteer coordinator for Boy Scout Troop 71. All three of her boys have been in the troop and band. Dowler is easily recognized as the mother hen for the Marching Cruisers and Troop 71. “She strived to make sure each Cub Scout succeeded,” Scout parent Shane Cartmill wrote in an email to the Southeast Messenger. “If your son didn’t have the activities completed or signed off on, she would follow up with the scout and the parent. If there was an issue because of time, money, resources, Julie would figure out a way to make it happen.” “She is a kid-first person,” said Groveport Madison Band Director Bart Pickenpaugh when describing Dowler. “If it wasn’t for Julie, the kids wouldn’t have such an enjoyable experience. Her being there enables them and me to focus more on the music.” Work for the Marching Cruisers starts in June for Dowler when she starts the uniform fitting for the students she considers family. “This band is a family, we cry together, laugh together,” Dowler said. The Marching Cruisers are qualified to compete at Ohio Music Education Association State Marching Band Finals on Nov. 4th. In December, they plan to march in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Ga., and Dowler plans to be right there with them. When asked what her hopes are for the band, Dowler said, “I want them to be inspired to be the best people they can be and the leaders that they are…they have what is in them to be amazing parts of our society.” When it comes to scouts or band, Dowler can’t pick a favorite, but she admits the Marching Cruisers takes more of her time. It was this part time job that helped her fulfill some dreams for students in the band. One year some of the students didn’t have the money to participate in their annual band camp so Dowler paid their way. “We do it for the kids,” Dowler said. But how does she keep her energy up? “I’m surprised she’s not green herself,” Pickenpaugh jokes about Dowler’s love for Mountain Dew. “I naturally pick up a Mountain Dew for Julie when we are on the go.” “I want the kids to have a positive experience, so it’s that desire to encourage the art…and lots of Mountain Dew,” Dowler said with a smile. Leaf pick up The Groveport Public Works Department will pick up curbside leaves through Dec. 10. Residents are asked to rake their leaves close to the curb, but not in the street. Leaves in the street cause issues with water flow and sanitary sewers. Debris other than leaves, such as twigs, rocks and trash, will not be picked up. Avoid parking vehicles in front of or behind leaf piles. For information call 614-836-3910.
