Turning tough times into success
IT’S IRONIC the “club in the
pub” is now housed in The
Famous Grouse. It was
actually a group of disgruntled
regulars of that very pub who
set up the Ellesmere Country
Club (now Lincoln Club) back in
1969.
“A meeting was held to see
if they could form a premise
of their own. Somehow
I was elected on to the
committee,” says Lincoln Club
president Lynn Townsend.
Mr Townsend, who was 23
at the time, vividly remembers
there was angst at the very first
meeting.
“There was trouble . . . as
to whether it would be a
working men’s club or
whether it would be mixed
membership with women
involved. Most of the clubs back
in those days were working
men’s, however, there was a
movement starting for females
to be involved so that was
discussed,” he recalled.
It eventually went to the
vote and it was decided the
organisation would be called
the Ellesmere Country Club
with women to be included as
members.
“At that point, a number of
men walked away from the
meeting,” he said.
Membership fundraising saw
them able to raise enough funds
to buy the property on Millpond
Lane – the land which currently
houses the Lincoln Primary
School junior campus.
Then the task was set to raise
funds to build their own club.
Chocolate wheels were run at the
Ellesmere A&P Show. Members
also used the club’s land to grow
potatoes and sell them.
“We also took debentures from
members,” Mr Townsend says.
Eventually, there was enough
money in the coffers to enable
them to get a loan from the BNZ.
The club building, which won
an award for its architectural
design, was opened with great
fanfare on November 30, 1974.
