over summer
Lock your vehicle
when left outside.
Even when at home, it pays to be mindful that not everyone
roving the neighbourhood has honest intentions.
The last thing we need when arriving
back from a summer holiday is to find our
home has been broken into. The thought of
someone entering uninvited is concerning
enough in itself. Losing precious possessions
and those with special meaning, especially
where they hold irreplaceable memories,
is sufficient reason to take and secure our
homes while away.
The inconvenience of having our
belongings taken from our motor vehicles
not to mention being without wheels if our
car is stolen, is another reason for being
security minded.
Here are a few reminders of ways
you can increase your security.
Your home:
• Always lock your house when going out.
• If you have a house alarm, use it. Do not
share the main code with anyone else. Set
up a separate code for your teenagers so
it can be changed from time to time and
a temporary code for guests.
A lockable

door could
be fitted.
• Lock all firearms away in a secure place,
keeping the key where it cannot easily be
accessed.
• Lock away garden tools as they may be
used by a would-be thief for breaking
into your home.
• Keep your garage door shut when you are
in other parts of the house.
• Never leave windows open when sleeping,
if they might be easily accessed.
• Shut windows accessible from the street,
when elsewhere in the home.
• Lock the front door when working in your
back garden and even when inside. If
wanting to open this door for ventilation,
a lockable security door might be fitted.
Your motor vehicle:
• Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it,
even when it is parked up your driveway.
• Never leave your keys in your vehicles
when it is parked in your driveway or
garage.
• Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle.
If you must, hide them out of sight
preferably in the boot.
When going on holiday:
• Ensure all windows and doors are secure
before heading away.
• Organise a neighbour, friend or family
member to collect your mail and check
your property is okay.
• If you do not have an automated
irrigation system, ask someone to turn
your sprinkler on when the plants

simple act may save the heartache
of finding your privacy has been
invaded and with it precious or
even just handy items stolen.
