Irrigation vital in
hot, dry weather

With the Met service forecasting a long, hot
summer for Canterbury, homeowners will
want to make full use of their outdoor areas
to entertain family and friends, so having
lawns and gardens in tip-top condition will
be a priority.
Phil Hudson of Freeman Irrigation
advises that now is the best time to have
maintenance work done on irrigation
systems so they are in good working order to
meet summer demand. This will also prevent
the inconvenience and additional costs of
having landscaping repaired if problems are
discovered and need fixing during summer.
“Some irrigation system problems are
easily fixed, but they have to be identified
to be repaired,” Phil says, “so now is the
ideal time to book in for maintenance and
servicing.”
The most important part of keeping an
irrigation system in good working order is
having regular maintenance done on the
sprays, rotors and solenoid valves, Phil says.
Some of the basic problems commonly
encountered are:
- Clogged sprinklers
- Leaking sprinklers and valves
- Obstructed sprinklers
- Leaking/blocked solenoid valves
- Overspray onto footpaths, streets or
buildings
- Design problems
- Missing nozzles
- Pipe leaks or breaks
Smart controls for irrigation systems
are convenient for homeowners, and many
people have been asking about those, Phil
says.

“Also, if you wish to save money and
conserve water, a good rain sensor is an

As well as playing a key role in the local
economy, Phil also supports the community.
He has recently donated and installed an
irrigation system at Rolleston College, where
the students are developing a vegetable
and fruit tree garden, with the focus on
sustainability.
The Cancer Society has also had an
irrigation system installed in the grounds
of its new Rolleston building, courtesy of
Freeman Irrigation.
