renounced her plan to become a nun to marry him.<br />

However, in return she took charge of religious<br />

affairs and, instructed by some of the ablest men of<br />

the papal church from England and the Continent,<br />

set in motion the force which for three centuries<br />

placed the church of Columba in the shadows.<br />

Queen Margaret and the Scottish Church<br />

Margaret found the Scottish Church a church of<br />

the people; she determined to make it the church of<br />

the monarch. The passion of her life might be<br />

summed up in one word--Rome. As Dr. Barnett<br />

writes: “Hungary was a strongly Roman Catholic<br />

country. ... Here we touch the first vital source<br />

he writes, “Zeal for the church literally consumed<br />

her.”[34] What her purposes were in marrying<br />

Malcolm III, king of Scotland, this same writer<br />

states further, “Margaret very soon after her<br />
