However, in return she took charge of religious
affairs and, instructed by some of the ablest men of
the papal church from England and the Continent,
set in motion the force which for three centuries
placed the church of Columba in the shadows.
Queen Margaret and the Scottish Church
Margaret found the Scottish Church a church of
the people; she determined to make it the church of
the monarch. The passion of her life might be
summed up in one word--Rome. As Dr. Barnett
writes: “Hungary was a strongly Roman Catholic
country. ... Here we touch the first vital source
from which Queen Margaret drew her passionate
attachment to the Roman Church.”[33] And again
he writes, “Zeal for the church literally consumed
her.”[34] What her purposes were in marrying
Malcolm III, king of Scotland, this same writer
