observance, the evidence is clear. Canon 26 of the<br />

Council of Elvira reveals that the Church of Spain<br />

at that time kept Saturday, the seventh day. “As to<br />

fasting every Sabbath: Resolved, that the error be<br />

corrected of fasting every Sabbath.”[32] This<br />

resolution of the council is in direct opposition to<br />

the policy the church at Rome had inaugurated, that<br />

of commanding Sabbath as a fast day in order to<br />

humiliate it and make it repugnant to the<br />

people.[33]<br />

What connection is there between these facts<br />

and the early Waldenses? It is this: that while for<br />

centuries Christianity in Spain was one, yet when<br />

the encroachments by Rome on these primitive<br />

Christians in Spain began, the people of the<br />

Pyrenees separated themselves from the errors that<br />

crept in upon them. Robert Robinson writes that<br />

the people living in the valleys in different<br />

countries became known as the “valley dwellers,”<br />

or Vallenses. In fact, this author states his belief<br />

that the inhabitants of the Pyrenees were the true<br />

original Waldenses.[34] The original word is the<br />
