the haughty Cardinal Humbert comes into the<br />

picture. While Lanfranc was assailing Berengarius,<br />

and Cardinal Damian was preparing to gather<br />

Waldensian territory into the fold, the pope sent<br />

three legates to Constantinople with<br />

countercharges. Amongst others, the following<br />

charge was made by the pope against the Greek<br />

Church: “Because you observe the Sabbath with<br />

the Jews and the Lord’s Day with us, you seem to<br />

imitate with such observances the sect of<br />

Nazarenes who in this manner accept Christianity<br />

in order that they be not obliged to leave<br />

Judaism.”[47] Enraged at his failure to bring the<br />

Greek Church under subjection, Humbert declared<br />

it excommunicated. He found that the leading<br />

bishops of the East sided with the Greek patriarch.<br />

The gulf between these two communions was final.<br />
