to try them, and to purge, and to make them white,<br />

even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a<br />

time appointed. And the king shall do according to<br />

his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify<br />

himself above every god, and shall speak<br />

marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall<br />

prosper till the indignation be accomplished.”<br />

(Daniel 11:35, 36)<br />

Here a persecution against the saints is foretold<br />

which would last until “the time of the end.” It has<br />

previously been shown that “the time of the end”<br />

would begin when the 1260-year period ended, or<br />

in 1798. In the above verses is predicted the<br />

appearance upon the scene of world action of a<br />

willful king who would wreak God’s indignation<br />

upon the persecutor of His people. Since the<br />

persecutor was the papacy, one must look<br />

elsewhere than the medieval hierarchy to locate the<br />

willful king destined to put an end to the 1260-year<br />

period and to inflict a deadly wound upon the<br />

destroyer. What power was swinging into strength,<br />

seized with a religious antagonism to the papacy,<br />

about 1798? What other nation could fulfill these<br />
