expansion eastward, Wigram indicates their<br />

influence over Tibet: “The seventh century was the<br />

period of missions to China; and the strangely<br />

Christianlike ceremonial of modern lamas was<br />

quite possibly borrowed from Assyrian<br />

sources.”[15]<br />

The scholar, Alexander von Humboldt, reveals<br />

how thorough were education and organization in<br />

the Church of the East before Aba. He also shows<br />

how this same church taught arts and sciences to<br />

the Arabs:<br />

It was ordained in the wonderful decrees by<br />

which the course of events is regulated, that the<br />

Christian sects of Nestorians, which exercised a<br />

very marked influence on the geographical<br />

diffusion of knowledge, should prove of use to the<br />

Arabs even before they advanced to the erudite<br />

[learned] and contentious [argumentative] city of<br />

Alexandria, and that, protected by the armed<br />

followers of the creed of Islam, these Nestorian<br />

doctrines of Christianity were enabled to penetrate<br />
