after William the Conqueror landed, instead of the
prolonged wearing away, undoubtedly the early
Celtic Church would still be there. Little by little,
however, by intrigue, by flatteries, by threats,
supported at every turn by England’s armed power
and seconded by the strong papal influences in
Italy and France, the papal clergy succeeded after
seven centuries in obtaining the mastery.
Steps in Subjection
In analyzing the different steps in securing this
subjection, we might present them as follows: First,
