Perquimans Chamber by Colleen Brown The wonderful thing about living in a small rural community is that the holiday celebrations are all about tradition, family, community and friendship. Churches are announcing Christmas concerts, as are the schools, your neighbors are putting holiday decorations on their lawns, clubs and organizations are holding holiday celebrations. Downtown Hertford is beginning to look festive as the holiday banners and garland go up on the traditional street lights and local merchants decorate streetside windows with tinsel and lights. The historic Courthouse is decked in lights and the planters on the corners have sprouted lighted evergreen trees! I was neck deep in my own holiday decorations the first weekend in December, working to get the tree up and the wreath on the door, but that was only after the Grand Illumination celebration on Friday night (an annual event, Friday before the first weekend in December, mark your calendars) and the Christmas Parades. So, Friday night there was dancing in the streets – courtesy of The Dance Company of Hertford – as well as music, visits with Santa and the lighting of the huge tree on the courthouse lawn. Then, Saturday morning (always the first weekend in December, mark your calendars) the Town of Winfall’s Christmas Parade marches down Winfall Blvd., then there’s the Perquimans County Christmas Parade in the afternoon. And, if that doesn’t sound like enough jollity for you, you could ride up to Elizabeth City and watch their parade in the evening (the first Saturday in December, mark your calendars)! And, there’s more for everyone who is in the holiday spirit! The Albemarle Chorale is having its holiday concerts in the next few weeks. That’s going to be a great time. And, I’m sure that you have at least one school program on your holiday calendar because among the invitations from the children, grandchildren, your friend’s children, your neighbor’s children, there’s going to be a wonderful, exciting school program in almost everyone’s holiday season. Camp Cale is also offering a Christmas Concert, and don’t forget the local churches. Between the Lessons & Carols services, the Christmas Gospel Extravaganzas and the Christmas Cantatas there’s a lot of music in the air. Sometimes when you walk by a church on a weeknight you can hear a preview as the choir rehearses. Especially if the weather is nice enough to warrant the church windows being open! We may not have snow, not for a while at least, but we are deep in the holiday spirit. Charitable organizations are collecting to ensure that everyone has a happy holiday; shoppers are being encouraged to Shop Small throughout the holiday season so that your Christmas money supports your community because without our county, our neighbors and friends, how merry would our holiday be?
