Donations often decline during the holidays as people are busy with shopping, activities, and travel. Winter weather may cause blood drive cancellations as well. The Peabody blood drive will be held on Dec. 18, 2-7 p.m. at Lahey Clinic North Shore, One Essex Center Drive. All those who come to donate blood or platelets now through Dec. 19, will receive a $5 amazon.com gift card. Make an appointment to donate by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Another way to help keep the blood supply strong is to host a Red Cross blood drive this winter. To learn more about hosting a blood drive and to sign up, visit RedCrossBlood. org/HostADrive. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood. org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Another way to support the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. DECEMBER 6, 2018 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 9 Sports Added experience should help Tanners By Anne Marie Tobin PEABODY — If you believe is what Kareem Abdul- Jabbar once said, that “you can’t win unless you learn how to lose,” then you have to believe that the Peabody Tanners boys hockey team is ready to win. “By that definition we should be state champions then,” laughed Peabody coach Mark Leonard. “Honestly, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the way the kids have worked so hard. They’ve looked pretty good in drills and we have some kids who can shoot the puck, which we need because we have struggled the last two seasons to put the puck in the net. So far, for a team that didn’t win a single game last year, the attitudes have been extremely positive. Last year those kids got thrown into the fire, but I think this team can battle and win some games.” The Tanners had arguably their worst season in program history last season, finishing 0-20. As if that record wasn’t bad enough, they were, truth be told, simply outplayed in every phase of the game. They scored a program-worst 27 goals all year, and allowed an astounding 170 goals, an average of 8.5 goals per game, another program worst. But with nearly every player from last year’s team back for another varsity campaign, you have to think that things are looking up for Peabody hockey this season. The team, which graduated only three seniors in defenseman Jack McKelvey and Zack Freitas and forward Christian Jones, is returning a whopping 18 players from last year’s team. The Tanners will be led by a quartet of senior captains in defenseman Ryan Huber and forward Caleb Dollin, and forwards Nick Capillo and Connor McCarron, who served as junior captains last year. McCarron (left wing), sophomore Nathan LePage (center) and Capillo (right wing) will man the first line, while Huber, Dollin and junior Nick Ricci along with freshman Andrew Sousa will be in the Tanners’ primary defensive rotations. “Nick (Capillo) is a sniper who can score so I think that line will play off each other in a complimentary way,” said Leonard. “Andrew is a select player who PHOTO | ANNE MARIE TOBIN Ryan Huber is one of a quartet of senior captains that hopes to lead the Tanners on an upward trajectory. should see time on defense. We also have a couple of big junior forwards in James Guiry and Michael Zarra and our goalie is also back. Lucas (DeMild) played every minute of every game last year and he is looking good. He took a beating last year with all these teams that we have beaten in recent years, really took a beating to us all year long.” Other senior returners include forwards Jack Malcolm, Scott Chaplain and Dante Vargas and goaltender Matt Lockhart. Junior returners include defensemen Austin Higginbotham and Adam Aylward. Sophomores Andrew Phillips and Chris Fabbo along with defenseman Brandon Perry are also returning. Newcomers include seniors Eyan Fera and Michael Sabino, junior Alex Freedman, sophomore Anthony Bettencourt and freshman Luke Buckley. The Tanners open the season next Wednesday, Dec. 12 against visiting NEC rival Swampscott at McVann- O’Keefe Rink at 5:15 p.m. Two non-conference games (both at home) are on the docket, the first against neighboring Lynnfield on Saturday, Dec. 29 at noon, and the other against Hudson on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 5:15 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 16 the Tanners travel to Valley Forum in Lawrence to take on Masconomet in the annual Bob Driscoll Can Do Classic (3:40). They return home to the friendly confines of McVann-O’Keefe to face off against cross-city rival Bishop Fenwick in the 33rd Annual Carlin Cup at 2 p.m. when the Tanners will hope to take back the cup. The Crusaders won their first cup since 2001, beating the Tanners, 7-1. The Carlin Cup honors the memory of Charlie Carlin, considered by many to be the father of Peabody hockey, which began in 1912. Carlin coached the Tanners from 1947 to 1972, leading the team to 17 winning seasons and the 1952 North Shore Hockey League championship before suffering a fatal heart attack on the ice in the final game of the 1972 season on February 23. Fenwick’s Bright honored by Moynihan Lumber Bishop Fenwick football’s Cory Bright has proven to be elite on the athletic fields and in the classroom. That excellence in both realms saw him named the Moynihan Lumber male Student-Athlete of the Month for October. Cory Bright’s 2018 football season got off to a bit of a late start, as the four-year starter missed significant time after getting injured seven plays into the season. But he essentially put together a season’s worth of statistics in half the time. In just five-plus games, the senior quarterback threw for 1,167 yards with 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions in helping lead the Crusaders to a 9-2 record, winning the Catholic Central League Large championship. Not only is Bright one of the most productive players on the field, he also takes pride in being a leader on and off the field. “My role is to be a leader,” he said. “Being a quarterback and captain, all eyes are on me and I try day in and day out to lead by example.” Cory led the Crusaders’ to a 13-7 victory over Malden Catholic in his first game back. His best game statistically came against Cardinal Spellman, where he tossed five touchdown passes and threw for 386 yards in a victory. “I tore my ACL against (Spellman) last year,” Cory said. “So having success against them and getting the win made the entire process worth it, even if it was a tough one.” In the classroom, he sports an ‘A’ average while taking AP US History and AP Government. The senior’s favorite classes are math and history, and he’s looking to major in one of those subjects when he gets to college. Overall, Cory contributes his success to his work ethic. “It’s challenging at times trying to balance sports with school work,” he said. “I’ve been able to find success in both areas through time management, keeping an eye on schedules and placing as much time as I can on schoolwork. There are some late nights and schoolwork on the weekends, but having success and the satisfaction of putting in the work and seeing good results makes it all worth it.” FILE PHOTO Cory Bright was honored by Moynihan Lumber for his leadership both on and off the field.
