Like everyth<strong>in</strong>g Richard<br />
Altman and son Eric <strong>to</strong>uches,<br />
the Runway is a success<br />
and now officially ready for<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
I can honestly say when<br />
Richard <strong>to</strong>ld the folks at the<br />
DDG he was go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> remove<br />
some park<strong>in</strong>g space and fill it<br />
with a Restaurant, I believed<br />
it. Besides be<strong>in</strong>g a community<br />
builder, philanthropist and<br />
personal men<strong>to</strong>r, he loves <strong>to</strong><br />
make his resort more perfect.<br />
He delights <strong>in</strong> show<strong>in</strong>g it off<br />
as well. But what you may<br />
not know is that it is the first restaurant built <strong>in</strong> down<strong>to</strong>wn Cathedral City from the<br />
ground up <strong>in</strong> nearly a decade. Richard and Eric <strong>to</strong>ok a hands on approach and it shows<br />
<strong>in</strong> the details and quality of the new facility. But this is also a big step for the gay<br />
community. Our first full service, cloth<strong>in</strong>g optional, gay resort. You see, you cannot<br />
sell booze, as the say, "When the moon is show<strong>in</strong>g" (naked men). But these two<br />
build<strong>in</strong>gs are separated. The d<strong>in</strong>ers cannot wave at the nudes<br />
and the nudes cannot wave anyth<strong>in</strong>g at the d<strong>in</strong>ers. Those<br />
that used <strong>to</strong> love places like the Villa, never could be naked<br />
by the pool. Today you<br />
can have a dr<strong>in</strong>k, a bite<br />
<strong>to</strong> eat, and then have a<br />
relax<strong>in</strong>g swim <strong>in</strong> trunks<br />
or <strong>in</strong> the buff.<br />

a family friendly<br />
restaurant next door <strong>to</strong><br />
Richard Altman and CCBCa<br />

CCBC Resort Hotel is open for bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
and it's a marvel of modern architecture<br />
and development. They broke ground<br />
less than a year ago, <strong>to</strong>re up the park<strong>in</strong>g<br />
lot, then began construction. I would be<br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g my plans <strong>to</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the new year<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gs. From bars <strong>to</strong> Restaurants,<br />
the valley just got a lot gayer than ever.<br />
And with nearly a million views onl<strong>in</strong>e, the<br />

TALK ABOUT TOSSING THE<br />
BIRD<br />
“The best time <strong>to</strong> plant a tree was<br />
20 years ago. The second best time<br />

Like a helicopter full of live Turkeys <strong>in</strong><br />
"WKRP <strong>in</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati" Turkeys Away.<br />
These birds did not fare so well either. Or<br />
did they? I would say Edwards Bernays<br />
"the father of public relations" would give it<br />
a thumbs up.<br />
For this mission, we decided <strong>to</strong> get the<br />
<strong>in</strong>side scoop and become an embedded<br />
reporter. We did not hide our identity but<br />
we ma<strong>in</strong>ly observed.<br />
About a year ago, I found these Bird<br />
scooters all around Santa Monica. I<br />
thought what a mess, they were are all over<br />
the place like trash heaps. But I wanted<br />
<strong>to</strong> ride one, and that was a disaster. I had<br />
trouble creat<strong>in</strong>g a free account, then I<br />
could not scan the qr code with my phone.<br />
While other people hopped on and rode<br />
off, by the time I realized it was me, I<br />
was hooked. Determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>to</strong> ride like a 10<br />
year old on a scooter. A scooter seemed<br />
silly I thought, a kids <strong>to</strong>y. But then a man<br />
that made birds out of palm fronds got<br />
my attention. It also <strong>to</strong>ld me more than I<br />
wanted <strong>to</strong> know about these scooters. They<br />
are not a <strong>to</strong>y. They represent the future.<br />
I had all the same questions I read on<br />
the net. Streets are already filled with<br />
dangerous th<strong>in</strong>gs. In <strong>Palm</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gs, the<br />
snow birds and absent-m<strong>in</strong>ded old people<br />
with anger issues can barely navigate a<br />
cross walk. Holy assless chaps, Batman,<br />
people that ride them love them and those<br />
that fear them hate them. I unders<strong>to</strong>od<br />
we would be embroiled <strong>in</strong> an epic scooter<br />
battle. So I needed <strong>to</strong> do this one last<br />
adventure. My doc<strong>to</strong>r said my next<br />
adventure would be my last, fuck him<br />
right? Any day you may die and an epic<br />
struggle is a good day <strong>to</strong> die. Actually,<br />
I was moved more by the gig economy<br />
aspect. I did not want ride share because I<br />
don't even like it when the drivers talk <strong>to</strong><br />
me.<br />
Also, not s<strong>in</strong>ce Ful<strong>to</strong>n's steamboat steamed<br />
up the Hudson River, as those on the river<br />
bank laughed and <strong>to</strong>ssed rocks. Has his<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
been so pungently depicted <strong>in</strong> cities across<br />
America than the task of <strong>in</strong>sane rebellion?<br />
<strong>This</strong> I dreamed about every day <strong>in</strong> grade<br />
school. To be a swash buckl<strong>in</strong>g pirate and<br />
save the boy <strong>in</strong> distress. I would hold him<br />
as he recovered and he would say "No<br />
homo, bro. What? Your star<strong>in</strong>g at me and I<br />
am not gayly".<br />
But add<strong>in</strong>g a nearly free scooter transport<br />
<strong>to</strong> our city that is both recklessly dangerous<br />
and fun. So I disguised my true identity (I<br />
didn't) and I signed up <strong>to</strong> be a charger. One<br />
of the people that handle the day <strong>to</strong> day<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of the scooters for pay.<br />
It’s the hop on and hop off transportation<br />
of the future. Then I forgot all about it.<br />

<strong>This</strong> year a pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by Leonardo da<br />
V<strong>in</strong>ci titled "Salva<strong>to</strong>r Mundi" was<br />
sold by Christie's Auction House for<br />
$450.3 Million. <strong>This</strong> is his<strong>to</strong>rically the<br />
most ever paid for a pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
world. <strong>This</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g has an extensive<br />
his<strong>to</strong>ry beh<strong>in</strong>d it. It is a depiction<br />
of Leonardo's <strong>in</strong>terpretation of Jesus<br />
Christ. the title, "Salvaa<strong>to</strong>r Mundi" is<br />
Lat<strong>in</strong> for "Savior of The World". It<br />
passed from Italy <strong>to</strong> England by a series<br />
of marriages and as part of dowries.<br />
In the UK it was sold for as little as<br />
45 pounds. It went through a series of<br />
repa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g over the orig<strong>in</strong>al and was<br />
for a time thought <strong>to</strong> be a pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by<br />
one of Leonardo's students. It was<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ally res<strong>to</strong>red and authentication by<br />
Diane Dwyer Modest<strong>in</strong>i from New<br />
York Univeristy <strong>in</strong> 20<strong>11</strong>, <strong>This</strong> year<br />
it was purchased by Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Badr b<strong>in</strong><br />
AdamsArtExpose’<br />
Mohamnmed Al Fahan on behalf of<br />
the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture.<br />
The pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>to</strong> be displayed at the<br />
Louvre Abu Dhabi but no date has been<br />
established for its unveil<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Other most expensive pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs this<br />
year, <strong>in</strong>clude: an abstract by Mark<br />
Rothco which sold for $186. million.<br />
A pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by Paul Gaugu<strong>in</strong> titled,<br />
"Will You Marry", from his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />
completed dur<strong>in</strong>g his reclusive time<br />
spent on the island was sold for $210.<br />
million. Another abstract by the U.S.<br />
artist, William de Koon<strong>in</strong>g titled,<br />
"Interchange" sold for $300. million.<br />
A pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g by Amedeo Modigliani<br />
from the early 1900's of a female nude<br />
sold for $170. million. Modigliani's<br />
work was never appreciated dur<strong>in</strong>g his<br />
lifetime. These are a small sampl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of art that was sold dur<strong>in</strong>g this year<br />
reflect<strong>in</strong>g at least the extr<strong>in</strong>sic value<br />
of art as a commodity. The <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic<br />
value of art still emanates from the<br />
appreciation of the viewer. As you<br />
view the art represented here you will<br />
undoubtedly have different emotions<br />
regard<strong>in</strong>g your <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic appreciation<br />
or not, of the art, as opposed <strong>to</strong> the<br />
extr<strong>in</strong>sic dollar value given <strong>to</strong> it.<br />

That is how it happened for me, the<br />
mechanized scooter folly can now be<br />
recorded <strong>in</strong> the his<strong>to</strong>ry books and <strong>in</strong> 100<br />
years from now, it will be allowed <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Texas school books and <strong>in</strong> 1000 years they<br />
may return <strong>to</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gs. Maybe I have<br />
hope that a compromise can be found.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the rigorous tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g that consisted<br />
of a 3 m<strong>in</strong>ute power po<strong>in</strong>t, it was QA<br />
time. I had not heard the city make any<br />
statement about these. One suck up said<br />
the city is really fast <strong>to</strong> address safety issues<br />
licens<strong>in</strong>g and what not. The answer was<br />
simply that all was OK and dammit, that<br />
was good enough for us. Now let us play<br />
with the scooters!<br />

Nope! Now we grabbed the scooters and<br />
collectively didn't tell anyone. Some of us<br />

city, one s<strong>to</strong>ry said. It was 200. There will<br />
be massive accidents and severe <strong>in</strong>juries.<br />
Probably a child will be killed or mauled.<br />
They demanded the City res<strong>to</strong>re sanity.<br />
No <strong>in</strong>juries reported and kids cannot rent<br />
them. By 9pm we stared collect<strong>in</strong>g them.<br />
Then for me, THE disaster. 4am wake up? I<br />
quit my job at Planet B<strong>in</strong>go writ<strong>in</strong>g gam<strong>in</strong>g<br />
software because they wanted me there at<br />
7am.<br />
there is no quit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a gig. Like UBER, just<br />
s<strong>to</strong>p do<strong>in</strong>g it.<br />
So we seemed <strong>to</strong> have been caught napp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for about 2000 years. Hello! Hey, we should<br />
be plann<strong>in</strong>g for the one constant called<br />
"change". 2000 years ago, changes <strong>to</strong>ok a<br />
few hundred years. Now, its more like a few<br />
hundred m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />
Big PR gamble or Classic Coke debacle,<br />
perhaps Bird has done us a favor by<br />
gett<strong>in</strong>g everyone ready for a future that is<br />
<strong>in</strong>evitable.<br />
From what I learned, I recommend the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g areas be considered for approval.<br />
• Tax<strong>in</strong>g, licens<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>surance that<br />
will not significantly <strong>in</strong>crease the ride<br />
cost.<br />
• Limit<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>to</strong>tal numbers of each<br />
company and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g over time.<br />
• Mapp<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>to</strong>wn <strong>to</strong> set up go or<br />
no-go zones, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g as less traffic<br />
side streets, schools and other areas<br />
that might track vandalism or the<br />
under 18 group.<br />
• Escalat<strong>in</strong>g civic penalties for bad<br />
behavior<br />
• Add<strong>in</strong>g a novice mode that limits new<br />
users the scooter under a certa<strong>in</strong> speed<br />
and used as a penalty for misuse of<br />
some aspects, like no go zones.<br />
With luck, we will be able <strong>to</strong> live <strong>to</strong> see the<br />
future we want and keep the past we want<br />

at ARPA as the man<br />

No, I’m gotten used <strong>to</strong> it, but it’s<br />
always nice <strong>to</strong> have a fresh one.<br />
How much of your work is <strong>in</strong><br />
enterta<strong>in</strong>ment and how much<br />
of it is activism?<br />
I’m not that active right now.<br />
I show up when they call me or<br />

You were a two-term President<br />
of the Screen Ac<strong>to</strong>rs Guild <strong>in</strong><br />
the 80s. How do you feel the<br />
guild is do<strong>in</strong>g consider<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
challenges it faces now?<br />
First of all, I did not celebrate<br />
the merger (SAG and AFTRA).<br />
It was not done as we had been<br />
seek<strong>in</strong>g merger all these years,<br />
<strong>to</strong> get it done with the proper<br />
portability of pension and health<br />
pay. None of that <strong>to</strong>ok place. It’s<br />
now like 160,000 members and<br />
I don’t f<strong>in</strong>d them that outspokenly<br />
strong <strong>to</strong> merit a strike. If<br />
you strike, make it mean someth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k the advances<br />
they have made <strong>in</strong> the context<br />
they have achieved are that<br />
good or important. My jury is<br />
still out.<br />
I met you at an ACLU fundraiser<br />
over ten years ago. Are<br />
you still active with ACLU?<br />
No, they don’t call me. The people<br />
who I knew at ACLU, most<br />
of them retired. They left. I’m<br />
not familiar with the new crew.<br />
Do you have any major<br />
regrets?<br />
No. I regret that I when I came<br />
<strong>in</strong> as President (Screen Ac<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
Guild), I wasn’t more versed<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>tricacies of runn<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
union, of know<strong>in</strong>g how <strong>to</strong> play<br />
the union, I did a lot of runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fast, but I’m still learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
What new project(s) do you<br />
have com<strong>in</strong>g up?<br />
Well I do two shows, a man<br />
and his prostate, which Ed<br />
We<strong>in</strong>berger wrote, which is<br />
always successful, Joe Proc<strong>to</strong>r<br />
and Samuel Warren wrote a<br />
f<strong>in</strong>e piece called, “God Help Us”,<br />
which I play God, it requires a<br />
man and a woman who have<br />
been lovers <strong>in</strong> the past, but who<br />
disagree <strong>in</strong>tensely with each<br />
other’s positions, one is a fascist<br />
and one is an extreme liberal.<br />
So those promote well and show<br />
well. These are good times for<br />

very saddened at the pulled by<br />
the United States from the Iran<br />
nuclear agreement and knew it<br />

other than wildlife and Central<br />
American issues that I can contribute<br />

Veterans Choice Program<br />
(VCP)<br />
The Veterans Choice Program is one of<br />
several programs through which a Veteran<br />
can receive care from a community<br />
provider, paid for by the Department<br />
of Veterans Affairs (VA). For example,<br />
if a Veteran needs an appo<strong>in</strong>tment for<br />
a specific type of care, and VA cannot<br />
provide the care <strong>in</strong> a timely manner or the<br />
nearest VA medical facility is <strong>to</strong>o far away<br />
or <strong>to</strong>o difficult <strong>to</strong> get <strong>to</strong>, then a Veteran<br />
may be eligible for care through the<br />
Veterans Choice Program.<br />
To use the Veterans Choice Program,<br />
Veterans must receive prior authorization<br />
from VA <strong>to</strong> receive care from a provider<br />
that is part of VA’s VCP network of<br />
community providers. The authorization is<br />
based on specific eligibility requirements<br />
and discussions with the Veteran’s VA<br />
provider. VA must authorize care that<br />
is needed beyond the scope of the first<br />
authorization.<br />
