We’re back after our summer break and<br />
hoping that you all had a great summer.<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> and <strong>Norden</strong> is such a vibrant<br />
community and so many of our articles<br />
represent the wealth of involvement by<br />
local volunteers in the area over the<br />
summer months.<br />
Rochdale in Bloom features greatly in this<br />
issue with Judges visiting the town on 9th<br />
August and viewing its horticultural<br />
highlights including <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park,<br />
Denehurst Park and Rochdale AFC<br />
Wonderwall. This year Rochdale is being<br />
judged for the finals of the ‘Small City’<br />
category and we wish them all the very<br />
best. Members of the Rooley Moor<br />
neighbourhood Forum as well as ‘In Bloom’<br />
volunteers have also dedicated their time<br />
to improving the area around Catley Lane<br />
Head Village.<br />
There’s been a huge amount of work<br />
carried out at Denehurst Park over the<br />
summer resulting in this unused park<br />
becoming a wonderful place for local<br />
visitors and residents to enjoy.<br />
If you’re looking to get involved in your<br />
local community then take a look at the<br />
Autumn programme for the Friends of<br />
<strong>Bamford</strong> on page 68 with activities ranging<br />
from Daffodil planting to Carol singing!<br />
One very important date for your diary is<br />
the <strong>Norden</strong> Village Christmas market and<br />
Lights Switch on organised by NEEVA on<br />
29th November.<br />

be of an equal standard to start my holiday off in style. I’d not heard of J21 before I saw<br />
their advert in ‘Streetwise’ and decided to check them out.<br />
J21 had over 500 reviews posted through an independent review company and are the<br />
only ever Airport transfer company to win ‘Business of the year > 1 Million’ at the Annual<br />
Rochdale Business Awards.<br />
Although all of the reviews were great, the one below really caught my eye.<br />
“Having seen this company around the airport I decided to give them a try when I next<br />
travelled and I was really pleased I did. I was upgraded from bronze to gold which<br />
was a lovely surprise and will always be welcomed! I can see why people would opt<br />
for that package as the car was impeccable. The service was great and the meet and<br />
greet well done and preferable. This is a family company and the owners Son, Michael,<br />
who was my driver was Charming. I will be using J21 for my next trip for sure.”<br />
After reading this review I contacted J21 by phone, the owner, John Byrne, answered<br />
my call, he offered me a complimentary upgrade from Bronze to Gold service as it was<br />
my first booking, he also offered me a small discount if I wanted to pay cash to the driver<br />
on the day.<br />
I decided to book online as it was more convenient to book and pay online at<br />
www.j21airporttaxis.co.uk using my credit card, the process took just 2 minutes and<br />
the online booking was very easy to do even though I am not the best on a computer.<br />
I have Just travelled with them again using the Bronze service and was amazed at the<br />
quality, the driver told me that drivers have to work their way up the ladder at J21<br />
and that in reality the Bronze drivers are all in training to be top Chauffeurs.<br />

DENIS HOPE<br />
Menswear are<br />
moving to <strong>Norden</strong>!<br />
After almost 60 years in Rochdale Town<br />
Centre, DENIS HOPE are closing their Drake<br />
street store and moving to <strong>Norden</strong> village.<br />
Founded by Denis Hope in 1959, the shop size more than tripled over the first 15 years,<br />
allowing Denis to showcase an array of new and exciting labels, many of which were sourced<br />
from all over Europe. There was the introduction of a formal hire department, soon followed by<br />
a ladies department. Denis always believed in providing the best experience to customers. If<br />
you have shopped in any of their stores you will know that impeccable customer service is still<br />
instilled in the team today. It is this ethos, coupled with exceptional quality<br />
clothing that sees generations of the same families still<br />
shopping in the store today.<br />
The store now in the hands of Michael, Denis’ son, has expanded<br />
further over the last few years. HOPE Menswear was opened in<br />
Clitheroe 7 years ago, with a ladies department added in August<br />
2017. And there is the beautiful HOPE Womenswear store, now in<br />
its 3rd year in <strong>Norden</strong>.<br />
While all 3 stores continue to prosper the decline of Drake Street<br />
has led to the decision to leave the town centre after 59 years.<br />
The move, headed by Oliver Hope, Denis’ grandson, is already proving a massive hit with<br />
existing customers and the locals of <strong>Norden</strong> village, and they’ve not even opened yet!! The store<br />
will occupy no 794 Edenfield Rd, 3 doors down from HOPE Womenswear, and is set to open in<br />
September <strong>2018</strong>. Once opened customers will find new and exciting labels from throughout<br />
Europe, mixed with well known brands like TED BAKER, BARBOUR,<br />
and the largest HUGO BOSS collection outside of Manchester.<br />
Oliver said “We are really excited about the move! We feel<br />
new customers will be surprised as to how much choice<br />
we have, not only on formal tailoring, which we are<br />
famous for locally, but the casual side of things too.”<br />
The hire department will also move to the <strong>Norden</strong><br />
store, with a separate entrance to the hire showroom<br />
at 796b Edenfield Rd. The in house alteration service<br />
is offered on all garments bought, meaning no<br />
matter your shape or size HOPE have you covered.<br />
September bodes to be an<br />
exciting chapter not only for<br />
DENIS HOPE but also for <strong>Norden</strong> itself.<br />

250g chicken breast meat, diced<br />
2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks<br />
1 small butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and<br />
cut into chunks<br />
2 red peppers, deseeded and cut into chunks<br />
1 onion, peeled and chopped<br />
6 cloves garlic, crushed<br />
25g root ginger, peeled and finely chopped<br />
½ tsp chilli powder<br />
1 heaped tbsp ground coriander<br />
1 heaped tsp ground cumin<br />
1 tsp paprika<br />
2 tsp curry powder<br />
1 tsp garam masala spice<br />
1tsp turmeric<br />
700mls boiling water<br />
3 heaped tbsp. tomato puree<br />
1 bag spinach leaves<br />
100g yogurt<br />
Handful chopped coriander<br />
1tsp sugar<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Preheat oven to 200°c / Gas 7<br />
2. Place chicken pieces, peppers, butternut<br />
squash and sweet potato in a roasting tin<br />
and spray or sprinkle with a little oil and salt<br />
and pepper. Roast for 15-20 mins.<br />
3. Meanwhile make the curry sauce by<br />
frying the onion in a little oil for 5-8 mins.<br />
Stir in the garlic, ginger and spices and<br />
cook for 1-2 mins. Add the tomato puree<br />
and boiling water then bring to the boil and<br />
cook for 15 mins, reduce the heat and cook<br />
for a further 15 mins, adding the spinach<br />
2 mins before end of cooking time. Remove<br />
from the heat and stir in the yogurt, fresh<br />
coriander, sugar and the cooked chicken<br />
and vegetables.<br />
Mix together well.<br />
4. Serve with plain boiled<br />
or pilau rice<br />

Catley Lane Head In Bloom <strong>2018</strong><br />
It’s Your Neighbourhood<br />
Catley Lane Head and the Rooley Moor<br />
Neighbourhood Area, is a great place with<br />
a unique heritage and a vibrant future.<br />
Members of Rooley Moor Neighbourhood<br />
Forum (RMNF) and ‘In Bloom’ volunteers<br />
worked together, with the support of<br />
Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council<br />
(RMBC), to make a real difference to look<br />
of Catley Lane Head village.<br />
We are extremely fortunate to have so many<br />
excellent volunteers who dedicated an<br />
enormous amount of time to ‘In Bloom’, they<br />
are crucial to having a neighbourhood of which<br />
we can be proud and they help make our<br />
borough an attractive place to live.<br />
We were pleased to meet the judges and<br />
showcase our beautiful area. Thanks to all the<br />
volunteers for the work they do.<br />
This is our first year and members of the<br />
community have been meeting informally since<br />
April when it all started with a village clean up.<br />
We’re not only cleaning up and making our<br />
area more attractive, but we’re making friends,<br />
enjoying ourselves and staying fit and healthy.<br />
From humble beginnings everyone in the area<br />
has taken this initiative to heart.<br />
Catley Lane Head regards itself as an ‘In<br />
Bloom’ village and when the Judges undertook<br />
their Judging journey we are sure they found<br />
this evident. We are truly proud of what has<br />
been achieved and we plan to continue to<br />
develop, innovate and, hopefully, exceed our<br />
own expectations.<br />
Planters, Flowerbeds<br />
and Floral Displays<br />
We have created planters and flowerbeds<br />
around the village. This has inspired residents<br />
and businesses in surrounding and nearby<br />
areas to do the same. Gardening groups have<br />
come together whilst our neighbourhood<br />
forum and local businesses have provided<br />
funds to support our activities.<br />
The planters have transformed waste land<br />
from overgrown shrubs blocking sight lines<br />
and gathering litters, to displays that act as<br />
gateways to the Village, giving year round<br />
texture, movement and colour that attract<br />
beneficial insects.<br />
Sustainable Planting<br />
The perennial plants are hardy and drought<br />
tolerant. We collect seeds, divide plants and<br />
take cuttings so that we can sustain and<br />
maintain them. Organic manure is used on the<br />
floral beds and watering of the baskets and<br />
troughs are carried out in the early hours to<br />
reduce transpiration. Traditional composting<br />
methods are used along with farmyard manures.<br />
Mulches of manure, composted or ornamental<br />
bark are used to help with weed suppression<br />
but also to enhance the look of the planting.<br />

Willow Obelisks<br />
Rustic willow obelisks have been used in<br />
gardens and throughout the village.<br />
Green Space and Going Wild<br />
With ever diminishing reserves from the result<br />
of intensive farming methods we are conscious<br />
of the impact of what we do on Bees,<br />
Butterflies and general insect populations.<br />
Floral displays<br />
Floral displays play a significant part of our<br />
planting. Displays are placed in the most<br />
prominent locations in both spring and<br />
summer, both in our gardens and on main<br />
highway locations where the widest audience<br />
can see them. Planted for both spring and<br />
summer display the schemes attract<br />
sponsorship, which in turn offsets cost.<br />
Bulb Planting<br />
Forum members supported the Rotary’s,<br />
‘Purple4Polio’ campaign, which is designed to<br />
unite communities to engage in activities as<br />
part of the final push to eradicate polio for good.<br />
Well, it certainly engaged the Catley Lane<br />
Head community who thought it would be<br />
a great idea to plant crocuses and brighten<br />
up the area around the BBC Plaque,<br />
commemorating the Rochdale Millworkers<br />
during the Cotton Famine, and the entrance to<br />
the village.<br />
Love Where You Live<br />
We carry out ‘community clean ups’ to do tasks<br />
such as litter picks, painting and planting of<br />
tired shrub beds.<br />
The Council also provides equipment, such<br />
as rubbish bags, gloves and litter pickers. The<br />
cleansing team then collect the rubbish from<br />
a designated pick up point.<br />
In Bloom Volunteers work to litter pick, remove<br />
weeds in gutters, varnish street furniture and<br />
replant shrubs beds.<br />

Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Autumn Programme<br />
We are pleased to announce that our programme<br />
of events from <strong>October</strong> to Christmas is now in place.<br />
The first of these, Daffodil Bulb planting<br />
on the Green opposite Tesco Express,<br />
<strong>Norden</strong> Road, will take place on Sunday<br />
14th <strong>October</strong>, from 1.00pm onwards.<br />
In case of wet weather, it will be the first<br />
dry Sunday after this. These new bulbs<br />
will supplement the daffodils already<br />
planted on the Green last year by<br />
community volunteers, everybody is<br />
welcome, so why not come along and<br />
plant a few, either the ones which we<br />
will be supply, or feel free to buy a bag<br />
of bulbs and bring your own, perhaps as<br />
a public but personal reminder of<br />
someone or something, or a way of<br />
getting your children involved in the<br />
growing process. Either way, you will<br />

pop the bulbs underneath and replace<br />
it. The bulbs will naturalise and<br />
increase over time and provide a<br />
stunning swathe of colour every spring<br />
for us all to enjoy.<br />
This will also be a good opportunity<br />
to view the area where the <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Community Garden and Woodland Walk<br />
is going to be created, at the very back<br />
of the Green. (The daffodils are at the<br />
front) The area at the back, which is<br />
bigger than you think, is currently very<br />
overgrown, and creeping forward every<br />
year but we are delighted that RMBC,<br />
who own it, have agreed to provide the<br />
heavy machinery and manpower to<br />
clear a space for the proposed<br />
woodland walk and garden. We are also<br />
thankful to Paul Ellison, of Evergreen<br />
Landscapes, for his advice and for help,<br />
especially in (hopefully) securing<br />
sponsorship for the landscaping and<br />
paths. Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong> Volunteers<br />
will be there to answer questions and<br />
explain what we hope to do, but as the<br />
funding for this project is dependant<br />
on Community Involvement and<br />
Volunteers, we need as many people<br />
as possible to come along and at least<br />
give us support and ideas, even if you<br />
don’t plant daffodils. We all live here,<br />
let’s make <strong>Bamford</strong> Better.<br />

On Friday 30th November, we’re starting<br />
Christmas early, before all the parties and<br />
works do’s begin, with a Christmas themed<br />
fun quiz, in <strong>Bamford</strong> Bowling Club, from<br />
7.30 pm onwards. This will be a<br />
light-hearted fun night, with supper<br />
provided.The quiz is a printed sheet to be<br />
done at your own pace, with missing words<br />
to be filled in, and although it takes the form<br />
of a fairy story, it is strictly for Grown Ups,<br />
and definitely not suitable for children! It’s<br />
best done in teams, and better still after<br />

Familiar Challenges<br />
September marks a major change in policing for the people of <strong>Norden</strong>.<br />
After over eleven years of dedicated and exceptional service to our community,<br />
PSCO Nick Haile is being redeployed to Castleton. We all wish him well with<br />
his new venture; I am sure that all villagers thank him for his superb efforts in<br />
keeping <strong>Norden</strong> a safe place to live and work.<br />
Nick will be replaced by PCSO Tracey Tynan from Thursday 13th September.<br />
If the face of policing in our area has changed, the approaching winter brings<br />
familiar challenges and the need to revisit familiar advice. Not all crime is<br />
avoidable but we can make it more difficult for opportunists to profit when we<br />
forget simple precautions;<br />
• If you are leaving your house unattended, even for a few days,<br />
cancel milk papers and other regular deliveries.<br />
• It is helpful to put lights on timers and consider leaving a radio<br />
or television on if your house is empty, particularly at night.<br />
• Secure the perimeter of your dwelling, including sheds and other<br />
outbuildings.<br />
• Make sure that vehicles are securely locked at all times and that<br />
valuable items are removed or hidden from view.<br />
• Ensure that windows and doors are secured before leaving your<br />
home unattended, even for short periods.<br />
• If you vehicle is keyless, consider putting the proximity device in<br />
a tin overnight to thwart scanning by criminals.<br />
Following this advice may help make the coming months quieter<br />
for residents and PCSO Tynan alike.<br />

ALlotments Open Day<br />
Moss Row Community Allotments held their<br />
second open day on Saturday 18th of August.<br />
This date was chosen to coincide with National<br />
Allotment week. There has not been an Open Day<br />
for a few years and as the last one was quite<br />
successful it was decided to try some fundraising.<br />
There is now a link with <strong>Norden</strong> W.I. who are utilizing<br />
excess produce and some members volunteer their<br />
time to help with general maintenance on the<br />
Allotments. Blackcurrant jam, mixed fruit jam,<br />
redcurrant jelly and piccalilli made by the W.I. were<br />
on sale. There were delicious homemade cakes<br />
made by allotment members. These consisted of<br />
lemon drizzle cake, carrot and walnut cup cakes,<br />
scones, ginger biscuits and two types of chocolate<br />
brownies. All could be washed down with tea,<br />
coffee or juice and all at a very reasonable price.<br />
There was also a variety of produce available for a<br />
donation such as marrows, courgettes, potatoes,<br />
beetroot, cucumbers and garlic.<br />
The weather smiled on us and helped to make the<br />
day a great success. Unfortunately what we didn`t<br />
realise was that we had some big competition as it<br />
was also the day of the Rochdale Feel Good<br />
Festival and the Opening of the new Market.<br />
We did have some visitors but nothing like the<br />
numbers who visited the Festival, 14,000 I believe.<br />
We were not disheartened though as a lovely social<br />
afternoon gorging ourselves on cake was enjoyed<br />
by all and we did raise some funds.<br />
Please note that there will be an open day next<br />
year and you can see what you have missed so<br />
watch out for the notices. There will definitely be<br />
a check that it will not be on the same day as the<br />
Rochdale Feel Good Festival.<br />

Save <strong>Bamford</strong> Greenbelt Update<br />
Firstly, we would like to express our gratitude<br />
and thanks to Angela Smith who will be stepping<br />
down from her role as chair of the Save <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Greenbelt committee. Angela has been recently<br />
elected as councillor for <strong>Bamford</strong> and we would<br />
like to wish her every success in serving the<br />
community. Sean Clowes, who has been an active<br />
member of the SBGB committee since it was<br />
formed at the end of 2016, will now take over as<br />
chair of the committee.<br />
Due to the overwhelming opposition responses<br />
and several other events and issues there have<br />
been several delays in the 2nd draft and we<br />
would like to take the opportunity to provide<br />
people with an update.<br />
The committee have been meeting periodically<br />
since our initial submission and will need to<br />
ensure that we prepare now for the impending<br />
release. Subject to the content of the new plans<br />
if <strong>Bamford</strong> Greenbelt protected land remains<br />
in scope we will be seeking to respond with<br />
another high quality and constructive opposition<br />
document. The latest updated revised plans<br />
are expected to be presented to the Greater<br />
Manchester Combined Authority in <strong>October</strong> for<br />
approval prior to a 12-month consultation.<br />
From the 11th September Rochdale Council<br />
are promoting a 10 year plan that will use old<br />
industrial sites which have been earmarked for<br />
hundreds of new homes. Similar sites will also<br />
be promoted in a bid to create hundreds of new<br />
jobs in the borough. The plan will also protect<br />
important green spaces, identify sites to manage<br />
the risk from flooding and help improve transport<br />
infrastructure. While this plan is helping the<br />
council to deal with their immediate housing and<br />
employment needs, in the longer term they are<br />
working with other Councils across the region on<br />
the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework. The<br />
public are now being asked for their views on this<br />
10 year plan.<br />
The consultation runs until 5th November<br />
and the plan can be observed at<br />
rochdale.gov.uk/development sites.<br />
Drop in sessions will be held on Monday 24th<br />
September, 4.00pm to 7.00pm at Number One<br />
Riverside, Smith Street, Rochdale, as well as<br />
other dates and venues across the borough.<br />
It is during this period that we absolutely need<br />
the support of everyone again. If we don’t act<br />
now when its gone we will never be able to get it<br />
back and this will change the fabric of our community<br />
for ever. This means <strong>Bamford</strong> will lose its<br />
last remaining green space and very importantly<br />
only remaining leisure facilities, over 11 football<br />
pitches that play host to around 750 children<br />
each week will also be taken.<br />
So, you may ask how can I help?<br />

In June the church held a successful ‘Big<br />
Summer Picnic’. This was a very enjoyable<br />
afternoon outside in the church grounds in<br />
the great spell of dry weather.<br />
Heritage events, fronted and researched by<br />
Susan and Lynn Whitehead saw the church<br />
open on Saturdays 8th and 15th of September<br />
with recordings of interviews, written<br />
documents and reports, photos and artefacts<br />
based on this year’s theme ‘Bury Union<br />
Workhouse’ (now Fairfield Hospital).<br />
On Thursday 13 September a talk was given<br />
by author Peter Higinbottam on ‘The History<br />
of the Workhouse’. This was a very informative<br />

DENEHURST PARK<br />
This summer’s amazing<br />
transformations<br />
Over the past two years Denehurst Park has been transformed from an unused park into a<br />
place for local residents and visitors alike to enjoy; new infrastructure and a whole host of<br />
landscaping works have truly turned the park around.<br />
Since last summer, new features such as the already popular stumpery have been added.<br />
Located opposite Denehurst House, it’s an impressive feature displaying the intricate nature<br />
of tree roots and logs. Not often seen in parks, the Victorian style feature is must see for all<br />
park visitors as they walk around the formal areas of the old Turner Family Estate.<br />
The Denehurst stumpery is quite similar to a rockery but made from parts of a dead tree<br />
instead; this can take the form of whole stumps, logs, driftwood, pieces of bark or even<br />
worked timber such as railway sleepers. The tree stumps have been arranged upside-down<br />
and on their sides to show off their impressive root structure.<br />
Rochdale Borough Council collected the stumps and logs over a number of months and<br />
carefully arranged them to form the new feature; rocks can also be seen scattered around the<br />
stumpery to further complement its natural look. A gravel path runs through the stumpery to<br />
allow people to walk around the feature safely and view the stumps and plants on show.<br />
Bark chips have been added to keep weeds at bay and to ensure the beds hold and retain their<br />
moisture in hot weather, keeping the plants looking green all summer long.<br />
Just before Christmas, students from Redwood Secondary Special School were invited to plant<br />
a variety of woodland plants around the first stage of stumpery. The children planted ferns,<br />
foxgloves, hostas, hellebore, primrose, epimedium and native English bluebells, which are<br />
ideal in the stumperies shaded environment. Mosses and lichens will also be encouraged to<br />
grow around the stumps and rocks to create a truly unique look.<br />
The second stage of the stumpery was planted by our weekly volunteer group adding even<br />
more colour to the park; lungwort, Solomon’s seal, Japanese anemone, Astilbe and hart’s<br />
tongue fern are to name just a few of the unique flora that have recently been planted.<br />
The stumpery provides a perfect habitat for several different types of wildlife and has been known<br />
to host small mammals, toads, stag beetles and numerous insects, very much like bug hotels.<br />
Weekly volunteer sessions are held each Wednesday from 10am-12pm<br />
during the spring and summer months. If you’re interested in helping<br />

Rochdale impresses<br />
Britain in Bloom Judges<br />
The judges from the Britain in Bloom, RHS - Royal Horticultural Society visited Rochdale<br />
on the 9th August and toured a host of the town’s horticultural highlights, which<br />
included, <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park, Edenfield Road Alley Gate Scheme, the Green Flag<br />
Award-winning Denehurst Park, Rochdale AFC Wonderwall, Castleton Railway Station<br />
and War Memorial, Springhill Hospice, The Growth Project, Rochdale Memorial Gardens,<br />
The Flying Horse Hotel and the WW1 Pop Up Garden.<br />
Rochdale Township In Bloom is being judged for the finals of the ‘Small city’ category.<br />
The medal each finalist is awarded will be announced at the RHS Britain in Bloom awards<br />
ceremony in Belfast on 19th <strong>October</strong>. The In Bloom team secured a prestigious place in the<br />
Britain in Bloom finals after taking overall gold at the North West in Bloom Awards in 2017.<br />
Starting at Nutters Restaurant Official, where Andrew Nutter is an ambassador for Rochdale<br />
in Bloom and finishing off at Rochdale Town Hall, judges spent the day being shown how<br />
community groups and the council have worked together to create inspiring displays.<br />
This year Rochdale in Bloom has taken inspiration from the First World War, to mark its<br />
centenary and honour the 16 million<br />
people who died in the conflict.<br />

Along the way judges met<br />
members of the public,<br />
school children and<br />
business owners who each<br />
demonstrated how they are<br />
working to make Rochdale<br />
borough greener and more<br />
pleasant. Rochdale in Bloom has inspired an everincreasing<br />
number of volunteer organisations to take up<br />
the clean and green challenge. Among the ever-increasing<br />
number of volunteers in Rochdale are primary and secondary<br />
schools, community groups and charities, Friends groups, as<br />
well as individuals who brighten up their streets and businesses.<br />
Volunteers come from every corner of Rochdale with representatives from 4-94 years old.<br />
Roy Down, chairman of Rochdale in Bloom, said: “Our members use their time, expertise<br />
and sheer determination to bring colour and life to the whole of Rochdale. Some have a<br />
passion for food growing, others a flair for creating blooming displays. Together, we have<br />
been working hard once again this year to ensure the area is as attractive as possible for<br />
the community and visitors.”<br />
Paul Ellison, Rochdale in Bloom committee, said: “The RHS judges were overwhelmed by<br />
the fitting tribute to Castleton and loved the WW1 pop up garden, as well as all our other<br />
great features. This year has been bigger and better due to the massive sponsorship<br />
support from Marshalls Plc. Where we have reached new heights, especially showcasing<br />
this year at the RHS Tatton Park flower show.”<br />

LOCAL CARNEGIE LIBRARIES<br />
Following the sale of his assets in 1901<br />
to J P Morgan at the age of 65,<br />
the Scottish steel magnate Andrew<br />
Carnegie, thought at that time to be the<br />
richest man in the world, decided that<br />
the moral obligation of his life would be<br />
to help others, so under the principle of<br />
‘The Gospel of Wealth’ over time he gave<br />
away $350 million.<br />
One significant aspect of this was the<br />
setting up of libraries, the first one being<br />
in his birthplace Dunfermline in 1883<br />
with ‘Let there be light’ above the front<br />
entrance. In subsequent years Carnegie<br />
libraries were opened throughout America<br />
and the world, over 2500 being built<br />
between 1883 and 1929. The first Carnegie<br />
library in Britain was in Keighley in 1899.<br />
There was, however, little or no early library<br />
provision in villages and small towns<br />
outside of Rochdale. A Carnegie bequest<br />
was an answer to this and in the early years<br />
of the 20th century applications for funding<br />
were made to the Carnegie United Kingdom<br />
Trust. The stipulation was that funding<br />
would cover construction only, local<br />
committees having to finance books,<br />
maintenance and repair of buildings, a<br />
reason for some authorities turning down<br />
the opportunity. In applying, proof was<br />
required that there was a local need for a<br />
free library service, a site for construction<br />
and an ability to both pay staff and<br />
maintain the building. These points were<br />
met locally and requests came forward to<br />
the Library Committee to apply for Carnegie<br />
funding from three local councils – Milnrow,<br />
Castleton and Heywood.<br />
It fell as the responsibility of towns to<br />
request Carnegie funding and the vast In Castleton there had been a small branch<br />
majority that did so were accepted at a library at a house in Emma Street in 1901<br />

Milnrow also made a successful request<br />
in 1902 for Carnegie funding of £2500<br />
and is now a listed building in the village,<br />
being of historic and architectural interest.<br />
Designed by Butterworth and Duncan of<br />
Rochdale (who also designed libraries at<br />
Littleborough, Wardle and Clitheroe) it<br />
combines both Arts and Crafts and Art<br />
Nouveau influences. The building was<br />
opened on July 4th 1908 and then as now,<br />
the library has a central borrower’s hall<br />
and a reading room. The ‘ladies room’<br />
(now an IT-suite) and the ‘boys room’ have<br />
become part of the general library. A first<br />
floor lecture room with its barrel-vaulted<br />
ceiling is an impressive space albeit<br />
currently rather underused. Dry rot<br />
threatened the library in 1999 to such an<br />
extent that Councillors commented that it<br />
might have to be demolished. However,<br />
funding was found for renewal of the<br />
buildings after much concern from the<br />
public and the council.<br />

A bequest application to the Carnegie<br />
Fund was successful in time for Heywood<br />
Library to be built and opened on 17th<br />
March 1906 by the Lord Mayor. Replacing<br />
an old library which had been opened in<br />
1874, the Carnegie-funded public library<br />
stands on Church Street. At a cost of £6709<br />
and built of Darley Dale stone with three<br />
columns over the entrance, it originally<br />
had space for an adult lending library, a<br />
junior library, a reference library and a<br />
reading room.<br />
In providing the funding for libraries,<br />
Andrew Carnegie bequeathed a worldwide<br />
legacy for the whole of society<br />
but especially for its young people. The<br />
marvellous buildings which are left to us<br />
reflected a time when architecture, learning<br />
and art went hand in hand and it should<br />
be sincerely hoped that such aspirations<br />
