Welcome to another issue, packed<br />

To mark the 100th anniversary of the end<br />
of WW1, there will be several special<br />
services taking place around Rochdale on<br />
Remembrance Sunday 11th <strong>November</strong> so<br />
check out page 67 with all the info you need<br />
about these. This month Councillor Peter<br />
Winkler has written a very interesting article<br />
about <strong>Norden</strong>’s War Memorial and Gardens<br />
which are such an important part of the<br />
history of the village as well as a well known<br />
landmark.<br />
Two important dates for your diary – the<br />
Christmas Market and Lights switch on<br />
taking place on Thursday 29th <strong>November</strong><br />
from 6pm and <strong>Norden</strong>’s Halloween Party<br />
taking place at <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park on<br />
Saturday 27the October. Friends of <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
are also organising a Quiz night at <strong>Bamford</strong><br />
Bowling Club from 7,30pm on Friday<br />
30th <strong>November</strong>.<br />
Distribution of the magazines is very<br />
important in order to ensure that as many<br />
local residents as possible receive our<br />
magazines each month. Last month we<br />
included two very important areas onto<br />
our distribution in <strong>Bamford</strong> and <strong>Norden</strong><br />
which included Red Lumb and the new<br />
Greenbooth Village. We hope the residents<br />
in these areas have enjoyed receiving the<br />
magazine.<br />
Look out for our bumper double December/<br />
January 2019 issue dropping through your<br />
letterbox from 22nd <strong>November</strong> onwards,<br />

Get Active in the Park<br />
It was another great event for <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park,<br />
Saturday 22nd September.<br />
The Activate team (Laura and John Ingram), Militarycation Fun Fitness<br />
& Wellbeing, in conjunction with the Friends of <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park, put<br />
on a family fun fit event which was enjoyed by many. Activities like the<br />
assault course, badminton, archery and rock painting was a hit with<br />
everyone who attended.<br />
Paul Ellison, chairman of the Friends of <strong>Norden</strong> Jubilee Park said, “Many<br />
thanks to the Activate team for putting on such a great event. It was a<br />
fantastic morning for the families and even our local Councillor, Jim<br />
Gartside got stuck in, on tackling the ‘beast’ assault course!”<br />

Cheeky trolls have<br />
become a much<br />
loved feature<br />
at Denehurst Park<br />
Four cheeky trolls have set up home in Denehurst Park.<br />
The stone characters have hidden themselves by the two bridges,<br />
nestled between the rocks and plants.<br />
Over the past school year, Rochdale Borough Council have run<br />
a creative writing competition with pupils from Meanwood and<br />
Caldershaw Primary Schools. The children were taught the story<br />
of ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff ’ and given the task of writing a poem<br />
or story about the arrival of trolls in the park. The winning creative<br />
writing piece from each school has been turned into a plaque and<br />
installed as part of the feature for park visitors to enjoy.<br />
Mrs Quigley the Class 3 teacher at Meanwood School said:<br />
“The children’s imagination has been greatly captured by the two<br />
cute characters. They’ve developed close personal connections<br />
with the trolls which has been a fantastic stimulus for their<br />
creative writing.”<br />
The students grew so attached to the new trolls that they’ve chosen<br />
to name them Pickles, Treestomper, Nail Chomper and Nose<br />
Nibbler. Visit the park and see if you can work out who is who!<br />

The sizable boulders which adorn both bridges were locally<br />
sourced from Scout Moor Quarry in <strong>Norden</strong>, creating quite<br />
a picturesque setting (and better home for the trolls). Over<br />
240 iris and marsh marigold plants have been planted around<br />
the ‘Monet’ styled bridges. Both are wetland loving plants and<br />
add even more colour to the park. The wetland swale which<br />
connects both bridges have been planted<br />
with meadowsweet and purple loose strife,<br />
which are both wildflowers and thrive in<br />
wet conditions.<br />
The project is part of a major capital investment<br />
that is bringing this key resource back to life.<br />
New paths, bridges, woodland sculptures, a<br />
stumpery, restored formal garden, wildflower<br />
planting schemes and an orchard project have<br />
been completed over the past 2 years and in<br />
July the park was awarded its first Green Flag,<br />
a symbol of excellence.<br />

of Walking Groups. Boroughwide Health<br />
Walks are run by the Rochdale Living Well<br />

grades of walks, between 1 and 2 hours<br />
duration, throughout the local countryside and<br />
are led by Volunteer Walk Leaders.<br />

before, are looking to be more active or are<br />
returning from injury or illness.<br />

THE STAKEHILL TRAGEDY<br />
When men (and women) transgressed<br />
military law in the years around World<br />
War 2 through refusal of orders, going<br />
absent without leave or maintaining<br />
conscientious objection they were sent<br />
to one of two institutions, military<br />
prisons or detention barracks. One<br />
such detention compound was<br />
situated between Rochdale and<br />
Castleton at Stakehill and had the<br />
unenviable reputation of being one of<br />
the harshest institutions of its type in<br />
the country due to its rigours of hard<br />
labour and its tough regime. A number<br />
of men were desperate enough to either<br />
attempt escape or were successful in<br />
escaping detention from there, nine<br />
breaking out of Stakehill in one month<br />
in 1945.<br />
However, it was an event in the<br />
Autumn of that year which hit the<br />
national headlines and drew debates<br />
in Parliament. A soldier, 32 year old<br />
Michael Thomas Hanlon, had been<br />
sent to Stakehill for two years<br />
detention on three charges of being<br />
absent without leave, desertion and<br />
making false representations. Hanlon<br />
was from Dublin and had enlisted in<br />
1942 and again in the Pioneer Corps<br />
in 1943. On October 5th 1945 he was<br />
found dead in his cell hanging by the<br />
Hanlon was given a Dublin burial,<br />
concern was raised about the case and<br />
there was a call for an investigation<br />
into alleged ill-treatment of him at the<br />
barracks.<br />
This was nothing new. Ill treatment<br />
had been suggested on a number of<br />
previous occasions but the case of<br />
Hanlon was brought to the attention<br />
of a curate from Castleton – Uriel Evans<br />
– along with his Vicar, Reverend<br />
Burroughs from St Martin’s Church<br />
and they were disturbed enough to call<br />
for an enquiry following what they felt<br />
to be an inadequate inquest by<br />
Rochdale’s coroner Mr S Turner. Evans<br />
asserted that there was more to<br />
Hanlon’s death than met the eye and<br />
that he had received a number of letters<br />
from the prisoners and ex-prisoners at<br />
Stakehill barracks with allegations of<br />
rough treatment given to Hanlon and<br />
others, saying that they would give<br />
evidence in any court of law. In support<br />
of this, an inquiry was requested by<br />
two Labour MPs, H L Austin the<br />
member for Stretford and Tom Driberg,<br />
the MP for Malden. The Secretary of<br />
State for War promised a full statement<br />
after an enquiry, the allegation being<br />
that Hanlon had been badly beaten and<br />
as a result had died.<br />

The initial inquiry by The Oliver<br />
Committee was held at Middleton<br />
Magistrate’s Court and heard evidence<br />
from Hanlon’s wife that he had been a<br />
happy husband and father, adding that<br />
he had made no particular<br />
complaints about his incarceration.<br />
Staff at Stakehill denied any wrongdoing.<br />
A pathologist, however, reported<br />
marks and bruises on his body and<br />
his neck and witnesses at the inquiry<br />
said that they had heard shouting and<br />
screams as well as threats from the<br />
guards the night before Hanlon was<br />
found dead. Some reported that Hanlon<br />
had told guards to leave him alone,<br />
that he felt dizzy and that the guards<br />
had said ‘You will be dizzier if I come<br />
in there!’ Other witnesses stated that<br />
Hanlon had been ‘treated to a beating’<br />
by three cleaners and three guards and<br />
that ill-treatment was commonplace at<br />
Stakehill. Even with these testimonies,<br />
the inquiry concluded that there was<br />
insufficient evidence to suggest that<br />
brutality had led to Hanlon’s death.<br />
However, by <strong>November</strong> there was<br />
continued public anxiety about what<br />
had happened at Stakehill and so a<br />
further court of enquiry was set up ‘of a<br />
more authoritative character,’ convened<br />
under the Army Act and therefore a<br />
military inquiry. It was held at Ashton-under-Lyne.<br />
Uriel Evans had by this<br />
time accumulated nearly 300 letters<br />
concerning the conditions at Stakehill<br />
and these were sent to the new inquiry.<br />
Controversially, the press was not<br />
allowed to attend, leading Reverend<br />
Evans to comment about the ‘dark and<br />
well-veiled secrets of the glasshouse’<br />
and suggesting that restricting public<br />
access to the proceedings was<br />
undemocratic, the composition of the<br />
court being entirely military. The result<br />
of the <strong>November</strong> enquiry maintained<br />
that there might have been irregularities<br />
of procedure only, and that individuals,<br />
not the system, must be held<br />
responsible for any shortcomings that<br />
may have occurred.The individuals<br />
would be reprimanded appropriately.<br />
The Rochdale Observer noted in<br />
December that Hanlon’s was not the<br />
first fatality at Stakehill as 15 months<br />
before another soldier had died three<br />
days after arriving, collapsing,<br />
allegedly during PT exercises.<br />
The case of Michael Hanlon remains<br />
shrouded in mystery but the fact that<br />
the proceedings of the second inquiry<br />
were held in camera and the testimony<br />
from many who knew of the cruelty<br />
dealt out to inmates was ignored,<br />
points to a tragic episode in the history<br />
of wartime Rochdale.<br />

60g stem ginger, chopped - optional<br />
155ml milk<br />
2 tsps bicarbonate of soda<br />
185g golden syrup<br />
60g black treacle<br />
90g soft brown sugar<br />
250g butter or margarine<br />
250g medium oatmeal<br />
250g plain flour<br />
2 tsps ground ginger<br />
METHOD<br />
1. Preheat oven to 160°c/ gas 4<br />
2. Grease and line a 20cm square tin with greaseproof paper<br />
3. Measure milk into a jug and add bicarbonate of soda, stir well to dissolve<br />
4. Put golden syrup, black treacle, sugar and margarine into a pan and heat gently<br />
to melt margarine and dissolve sugar<br />
5. Remove pan from heat and stir in flour, oatmeal, gingers and milk, stir well<br />
to blend together<br />
6. Pour mixture into prepared tin and bake in centre of oven for 1 hour or until<br />
firm to touch<br />
7. Allow the cake to cool completely in the tin; the cake might sink slightly in the<br />
middle. Keep in an airtight tin for up to a month, it goes softer with keeping.<br />

100g rosary goats cheese from Salisbury.<br />
Alternatively use any creamy goats cheese<br />
or try café 1999 ricotta version<br />
1 tablespoon chopped chives<br />
Squeeze lemon juice<br />
Dash Tabasco sauce<br />
40 large pitted olives<br />
55g plain flour<br />
1 egg<br />
55g breadcrumbs<br />
Vegetable oil for frying<br />
Method<br />
1. Mix together the goats cheese, chives,<br />
lemon and Tabasco sauce. Season<br />

2. Place the cheese mixture into a piping<br />
bag with a small nozzle and pipe the<br />
goats cheese into each olive.<br />
3. Roll the olives in the flour first, then<br />
roll in the egg and finally toss in the<br />
breadcrumbs.<br />
4. Heat the olive oil to 180°c and deep<br />
fat fry the olives until a light golden<br />
