Members of the City's new Coastal
Conservation Commission We're
named last week, and the group held
its first meeting at City Hall earlier
"• this,week'. :: • • : ,,..,.' •, . '•',:/.','.',
If such swift action is to become the
trademark of this new group, we can
all be assured that they will ac-
complish their objectives without
excessive talk and fanfare.
The responsibilities of the Coastal
Conservation Commission are broad.
They can recommend. changes in
existing laws dealing with the beaches,
bays, and inlets. They can strike out on
entirely new headings and recommend
new concepts and programs for
preservation and utilization of these
most natural resources.
The make-up of the new Commission
is important in itself. It is an even
match of public officials and ordinary
citizens. However, in this instance the
citizens are far from ordinary.
The public segment of the Com-
mission consists of five, notably
qualified persons who will lend depth
and expertise to the officials on the
Commission which include the three,
; City Cpmmissioners.and the heads of
both the Zoning and Planning boards.
The. selection of the five members of
the public was made after many weeks
of reviewing prospective candidates,
and the choices reflect the thought that
went into the selections.
Realtor T. John Carey brings to the
Commission years of experience in
beach erosion matters, as does Daniel'
V. Hughes in the bay areas. George A.
Gehring, as vice president of Ocean
City (marine) Research is also highly
qualified to serve, as is realtor
Thomas H. Heist, III., and Clay
Dorsey, commander of the local U.S.
Coast Guard station.
The Commission is off to a good start
and all of Ocean City will be watching
in the weeks and months ahead to see
how much actual progress is made.
Solution needed
A combination of strong westerly
winds and heavy rains throughout
South Jersey last week has been
blamed for the onslaught in recent
days of. mosquitos all along the South
Jersey coast.
According to Cape May County
Mosquito Commission Vice Chairman
Ed Cornman, of Ocean City, the
westerly winds might be bringing the
mosquitos in from as far away as
Cumberland County.
We all know the mosquitos are here,
the problem seem to be what to do
about them. There are arguments that
sending the City's lone fogging
machine against the insects is like
using a slingshot against the Russian
Army, but there is really very little
else that can be done. ~~
The County Mosquito Commission
has some slightly more sophisticated
equipment; 1 - including' airplane -
spraying, and a marshland draining''
program, but the mosquitos are so bad
this time even those efforts appear
wasted. .
It.mav sound like so much Monday
morning quarter-backing, but it is a
fact that an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure. In other words,
preventive measures should be taken
prior to the mosquito season in an
effort to destroy the mosquito larvae
before they are hatched.
. The County has attempted to do this
in the Spring, but lack of funding and
manpower have made the task dif-
ficult ."Few municipalities are willing
to contribute to the projects_for the_
same reasons.
It is unfortunate that Ocean City has
only $1,000 in its $6 million budget for-
mosquito control, but many com-
munities in Cape May-County have
budgeted even less.
-Only a cooperative effort by the
County and the municipalities will lead
to solution of;the mosquito'pYbblem.
Until both sides work together the
mosquitos will keep on biting and we
will keep on scrat
FRIDAY. AUGUST 12,1977 THE OCEAN CITY (N J.) SE
If the girls of Wonderland's Wonder Women's
spftball team handled international relations for this.
country, we all would live in a world of peace and
The Wonder Women engaged agroup of Air Patrol
cadets from the British Isles in a spftball game last
Wednesday evening. It was the only game played in
the city that night due to torrential rains that fell all
day. By the time it was over all the players were
covered with mud and the cadets had scored 32 runs
to the Wonder Women's 26. The girls, however,
claimed a moral victory.
As coach of the Wonder Women, we had a chance to
talk at length to the young men from across the sea.
Most were from England and a couple were from
Ireland and Wales. They were all staying at various
homes in Somers Point under, the watchful eye of Al
Ewing, who arranged their visit here and field trips
to various military installations through the Civil Air
Patrol.
Reports from guest and apartment
house operators pretty well confirm
that/at least one segment of Ocean
CStjrs business community is suffering
from an economic slump.
And; Public Relations Director
Mark Soifer has warned that economic
woes could permeate the whole fabric
of business relations here in coming
years if a comprehensive marketing
approach isn't pursued.
Even before a cry for help was
raised, the Ocean City Guest and
Apartment House Association struck
out on its own. to develop an ac-
commodations, guide to help
prospective visitors locate places.to
stay. .
That guide, still, in its formative
stages, has been placed in the .In-
formation Center on the Ocean City-
Somers Point Causeway. .
It is this type of innovative planning
and private initiative that Soifer is
trying to foster among business in-
terests in Ocean City as part of an
overall marketing strategy - and his
efforts are to be applauded.
Many people scoffed at Cape May
County Public Relations Director Lou
Rodia's predictions of a need for newer
markets 14 years ago, but his
prognostications are beginning to
show true and his efforts to attract
tourists from Canada are bearing fruit*
for those communities that cooperated
in. the planning.
Soifer also has taken his bumps from
would-be detractors, but his personal
planning of a spring and proposed fall
marketing seminar demonstrate that
he has the foresight needed to help this
community remain strong as a tourist
resort without losing its qualities as a
t family town.
Business and civic leaders should
pledge their cooperation to Soifer in
helping him develop a modern and
comprehensive marketing strategy
that will lead to a growth of all
segments of the business community
in an increasingly competitive tourist
industry. -
Ocean City, New Jersey is
our home. It is a city which my
entire family deliberately
chose to make our new home,
despite the fact that my
husband must commute at least
~twb hours a day to getto his job.
Our children love this island, as
do most of its residents, old and
settled in school and the two of
at home as is possible.
Editor, Sentinel-Ledger: This
is in response- to the letter
. submitted by Mr. William J.
Meis and printed in the August
5 issue of the Sentinel-Ledger.
Before I comment on Mr.
Meis' apparent "slur" toward
Ocean City "natives," I think I
should attempt to interpret.
Following are a few possible
interpretations of an Ocean
2. A person who has lived in
the job of those in City
Government, and all of our
residents is to allow this
changeover in form to be as
orderly as possible, and dty
workers will be instrumental in
insuring such a peaceful
transition. So we would plead
and want to see our own in-
the aty Clerk's office, but we can't get a new "press"
The current signs were constructed way back in
1971 from three reserved signs stolen from the old
Essig's restaurant across the street from City Hall.
They were stapled together and someone, who ob-
The sign is stained with water marks from its
previous years of service in the restaurant. It has
