The Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger
PAGE ^5—SECTION TWO
•»
To the rescue
' The future of Ocean City's proposed
Community Center took a turn for the
better this past week with the reinstatement
of some $450,000 of federal
• funds for the project. , .,
.' Earlier this summer the City
received word from the Economic
Development Administration that
Public Works Act funds totaling $1.44
million would be made available to the
resort for a variety of projects. During
a reallocation of funds in July the City
lost all but $550,000 of those monies.
Incensed City officials went to U.S.
Rep. William J. Hughes (D-2nd) and
appealed to him to intervene with the
EDA in their behalf.-Hughes was able
to get the additional $450,000 from leftover
round-one Public Works Act
funding.
Proponents of the Community
Center claim they are almost back to
their starting point as far as initial
funding is concerned since they expected
to get only $1.2 million of the
original grant. They claim the $1
million now allocated is what they
-need-to-get-startech
Finally!
Every once in a while a politician
comes on the scene who is more than a
popularity winner who looks good and
does little.
U.S. Rep. William J. Hughes (D-
2nd), in his second two-year stint in
Washington, is just such a politician
and is developing an admirable track
record in responding to his constituents'
needs.
In his latest Coup, Hughes convinced
Washington-based U.S. Coast Guard
-officials to overrule its Third District,
New York, headquarters and implement
a trial of fixed-schedule
bridge openings for the two spans
coming- into Ocean City and -one in
WUdwood. -..;....
|t f s been two years since this resort:
first filed its application far scheduled .
bridge openings along the Somers
Point-Ocean City Causeway and by
last summer surveys of traffic along
the thorof are convinced state
Department of Transportation officals
that the time lifts were needed.
Much to the chagrin of local officials
- and, in particular, Police Chief
Dominick Longo whose officers must
True champions
The Ocean City Beach Patrol continued
its mastery over other South
Jersey beach patrols this week with
an impressive over-all victory in the
South Jersey Championships.
As they have done so often in the
past, Ocean City's lifeguards simply
dominated the competition, especially
in the swim race where Ocean City's
Steve Cassidy finished a full minute
and 15 seconds ahead of: his nearest
rival.
Doubles rowers Dave Lill and Tom
Stephanik found: the going a little*
tougher, but they still managed to edge
out the team from Atlantic Gty. The
singles race was even closer until the
last few seconds when Ocean City
rower Tom Jackson crossed the finish
line on the strength of a passing wave.
Some minor arguments and petty
protests that usually accompany these
highly competitive races should not
obscure the fact that Ocean City
collected the maximum number of
points possible, 15, and their nearest
rival was Atlantic City with eight and
one half. . .
Ocean City's 12 victories and two ties
With tongue in cheek
FRIDAY. AUGUST 19.1977
However, if all the money is earmarked
for the Community Center
that means that there will be no money
available for other priority projects,
such as boardwalk restoration and
beach preservation. Those needs will
have to.be financed by bond issues
with the complete cost borne by the
taxpayers.
Slicing up the $1 million pie will not
be easy. Those opposed to the Com-:
munity Center concept are already
arguing that other priority projects
need attention as well. Their's is a
valid argument. The Community
Center people are also right in their
declaration that they need the $1
million to get their project off the
ground. ,
The City, through .Gordon
Berkstresser, who handles the City's
grant applications, is already looking
for other available State and Federal
funds to further aid the center and
other worthwhile projects of top
priority. Through this means the City
may be able to atleast^partiallyfunda
number of projects: .
contend with traffic jams all the way )
back to the boardwalk from frequent
„ and sometimes unnecessary bridge*
openings - the Coast Guard
ultimately nixed the DOT'S recommendation.
_
While most people and politicians
were either decrying the insensitivity
of Guard officials or issuing ineffectual
news releases demanding
action, Hughes was working behind
the scenes in Washington to set up a
meeting with Guard officials there and .
subsequently get. a commitment to
reconsider the data collected during'
surveys. :
On Tuesday, the Guard announced
that a reconsideration of the data
.convinced it that a trial period for the
: fixed-opening {plajn, wa? iivoitfer and,,.
.directed that; the every half hour,
schedule begin here next Saturday
between 11 a.ni. and 5 p.m. on
weekends and. holidays through
September 18.
—Hughes said the data gathered
during this experiment will help local
officials and the Guard in finding a
permanent solution to this perennial
problem. . :
in the past ie years in South Jersey
competitions obviously were not luck
and none of them came easily. Captain
George T. Lafferty, who has neighter
the means nor the inclination for
recruiting big name rowers and
swimmers, has had to pit his men
against beach patrols that used
recruiting to get the talent to unseat
Ocean City. Because of this they have
lost some of the competitions, but have
almost always made it up in other
areas..
Strangely missing from the competition
Monday evening at 18th st.
were any represer*atives of Ocean
City's official family. Even Public
Relations Director Mark Soifer, who
manages to make most events, wasn't
there..
It would have been aD r bpriate for •<
the Mayor or one of tht imissioners
to present the awards u ^e end of the
races, especially since Ocean Qty won
all three events. However, the lack of
official interest didn't dampen the.
spirits of the guards. They knew they
were number one and didn't need any
city official to tell them that.
