During November, Professors of the Faculty of Economics & Business organized
student visits to the Croatian Parliament.
Thus, students of the BDiB courses of EU Market Law and EU Company Law,
accompanied by Prof. Hana Horak, PhD and Assistant Kristijan Poljanec,
visited the Parliament on November 8, 2018. During this already traditional
visit to the Parliament, students had the opportunity to get acquainted
with the basics of Croatian constitutional and legal and political order and
to learn more about the structure and work of the Parliament, with a special
emphasis on the cooperation of the Parliament with the European Parliament.
In organization of Assoc. Prof. Hrvoje Šimović, PhD students of the course
Fiscal Policy visited the Croatian Parliament on November 27, 2018. On this
occasion the students attended the debate on the state budget for 2019.
... what academic domains (as they were archaically referred to in the 1925 and 1939 Statutes on organization), i.e. the authorities, existed until inclusion of the EKVŠ (School
of Economics and Commerce) into the University?
According to Art. 11 of the 1925 Statute, these were Council of Professors (consisting of all Regular and Extraordinary Professors, and two representatives of Private Assistant-
Professors, but latter having no right to vote), Rector and Dean.
In 1939 to them were added the Senate (consisting of the Rector and all the Regular Professors), the Lower and Higher Disciplinary Court (for disorderly and disciplinary offensive
of the teaching staff) and Court for Students.
And another curiosity:
According to Art. 6 of the Decree on the Establishment of the School of Commerce and Transport of June 17, 1920, all regular and extraordinary professors were appointed directly
– by the King.
The Department of Trade and International Business of the Faculty of Economics
& Business, in cooperation with the Croatian Chamber of Commerce,
on November 28 and 29 2018, organized the 9th International Trade
Conference Perspectives 2018: Contemporary aspects and role of international
trade. The conference has gathered more than 100 prominent European
and Central European researchers studying international business, international
trade issues, internationalization challenges, e-commerce, transport,
logistics and supply chain management.
International trade is the backbone of a globalization process that in some
way affects all segments of life and business in any country. Adequately
supported by development policies and appropriate infrastructure, international
trade generally governs economic growth, but it also enables the establishment
of sufficient flexibility of the economy as well as rapid adaptation
in case of possible economic shocks. The issue of international trade is
particularly topical and because of the current sharpened relations among
the world's largest economies, with implications for these relations being
the concern of all other countries. The goal of this conference was therefore
to explore the pace of changes in international trade, along with its
role in the modern economy. Different aspects of international trade were
discussed in order to determine which trends have the greatest impact on
international trade as one of the key factors for improving the competitiveness
of the national economy.
In the Proceedings, divided into four categories, 25 papers were published.
Seven papers in the first category scrutinize the issue of internationalization
of trade, while eight papers from the other group analyze the challenges
of internationalization. Five papers in the category 'Transport and Logistics'
address the current problems of transport technologies and overall
logistics. In recent years, the trade has changed considerably under the influence
of computerization and the orientation of an increasing number of
consumers through the Internet, whose importance is increasing day by
day. Therefore, the issues of e-commerce are studied in five papers classified
into the fourth group.
An invited lecture at the conference on the role of distributor in international
trade was held by Mr. Stjepan Roglić, CFO at Orbico Group. As part
of the conference, a two-day methodological seminar on the Models and
Techniques of Econometric Analysis for Scientific Research for doctoral students
was held. The conference was concluded by awarding prizes to the
attentive participants.
From December 6 to 8, 2018, the DTC - Digital Transformation Conference
2018 was held in Zagreb. The conference brought together experts from the
academic community, public administration and the business sector, and
was organized by the Department of Informatics at the Faculty of Economics
& Business, University of Zagreb, FOI Varaždin, Innovation Center Nikola
Tesla, Adult Education Institution - ILBA and InfoDom Group.
As a co-organizer and contractor, the members of the Department of Informatics
actively participated in the conference program and shared their
knowledge, experience and research results on digital transformation and
digital economy.
topic of Recommendations from the Digital Transformation Study - case study
of three Croatian companies.
The plan is to continue co-operation with conference organizers to be held
in the coming years. The conference was the result of the activities carried
out under the project with the university support Digital Transformation of
Croatian Enterprises, headed by Prof. Vesna Bosilj Vukšić, PhD.
DTC conference took place in four sections, and Prof. Vesna Bosilj Vukšić,
PhD and Prof. Mario Spremić, PhD were, among other things, leaders of
special thematic sections, while Ms. Lucija Ivančić, MBA, together with Mr.
Marijo Volarević (CDO) from Croatia osiguranje, held a presentation on the
A new topic of discussion on the actuality of competition law and policy,
held on November 16, 2018 at the Faculty of Economics & Business, was
Implementing of a Competition Law System - Three Decades of Polish Experience.
Dr. Marek Martyniszyn of the University of Belfast presented the results of
research conducted with Dr. Bernaton, from the University of Warsaw,
which analyzed the introduction and development of the system for protection
of competition in Poland in the last thirty years. During this period,
Poland has gone through two key transitions: from a planned economy to a
free market and from communism to democracy.
Based on the insights from the research conducted, Dr. Martyniszyn presented
his original methodological framework that enabled him to make
some broader conclusions about how the system works. Participants' questions
focused on the parallels between Croatian and Polish experiences. It
was noted the existence of some institutional weaknesses characterized by
the Polish system and which do not exist in Croatia. Dr. Martyniszyn
warned of the perceived passivity in implementing the rules on competition
in Poland in recent years, which in his opinion stems from the mentioned
institutional shortcomings.
The panel was precious for Croatia's close comparative experience, as
pointed out by present members of the Croatian Competition Council.
Professor at the University of Belfast Marek Martyniszyn, PhD, held a workshop
on publishing papers in international scientific journals on November
16, 2018 at the Faculty of Economics & Business.
This interactive workshop was concerned with the process of publishing
papers in international scientific journals, and the lecturer provided practical
advice on solving the most common problems and difficulties in the
process. The workshop was intended for the scientific and teaching staff of
the Faculty of Economics & Business and Faculty of Law of the University
of Zagreb and the PhD students at these faculties.
Dr. Martynissyn encouraged the participants to publish in English in prominent
scientific journals, which should be deliberate personal decision, but
also warned, among other things, that it is necessary to know the process
of publishing, to use the native speaker for proofreading, and to be aware
of the huge competition in that process.
It was interesting to hear about the criteria for academic advancement in
the UK, which is entirely focused on publishing articles in magazines.
Within the Brown Bag Seminar a session was held by Assist. Prof. Vladimir
Arčabić, PhD and Ms. Nora Mustać from the Department of Macroeconomics
and Economic Development. Assist. Prof. Arčabić presented his work
entitled Fiscal Convergence and Sustainability in the European Union, for
which he was awarded by the Foundation Prof. Dr. Marijan Hanžeković for
2018, while Ms. Nora Mustać presented his doctoral work in emerging Russia
and China: the divergence of the growth rate after the transition.
In the work of Assist. Prof. Arčabić, fiscal convergence and sustainability in
the European Union is analyzed using public debt, revenue and expenditure
data. There is absolute fiscal divergence in the EU, which is particularly
pronounced after the debt crisis. However, there is fiscal convergence
among the clubs when the clubs are endogenous. Convergence clubs are
important for the EU, because there is no single fiscal policy, but the policies
of the member states are heterogeneous. Endogenous convergence
clubs do not have the usual geographic, political or developmental similarities.
Fiscal policy in the EU is not sustainable, but it is countercyclical. The
paper uses a fiscal response function according to which the primary surplus
is the public debt function and the GDP gap. The primary surplus does
not respond to changes in public debt, which is considered to be long-term
unsustainable. However, the primary surplus is increasing in expansions
and decreasing in recession, which is about fiscal policy countercyclicy.
Countercyclical primary surplus is important for mitigating business cycles.
The future doctoral work of colleague Ms. Mustać will explore the success
of transition from the planned to the market economy with the greatest
emphasis on Russia and China as the two leading transition countries with
different final outcome of transition. After the transition, the Chinese
economy has one of the world's largest economic growth rates, while Russia
is regressing and stagnating. Why transition "brought" to China high
growth rates, and to Russia not, what are the reasons for China's economic
success and the Russian failure of transition respectively, and where are
the links with Croatia's transition and its success.
First, it is about two most economically powerful transition countries with
a similar initial model of the socialist planning economy. Therefore, the
outcomes of their market transformation are crucial for the overall assessment
of the results of the transition. Second, their economic performance
has a significant influence on the transition processes in Croatia. Particularly
were strong economic relations between Croatia and Russia in the pre
-transition period and their reduction during transition have directly affected
the level of economic activity and the specificity of the consequent
deindustrialization of the Croatian economy.
The seminar was attended by FEB researchers and our students, and there
were numerous useful questions asked.
In the organization of the Student Entrepreneur Incubator, a guest lecture
on November 21, 2018 at the Faculty of Economics & Business gave Prof.
Salvatore Tomaselli, PhD, professor of business administration and member
of the ARCA Incubator Committee from the University of Palermo, Italy.
On the example of the Academic Incubator of the University of Palermo, as
the importance of making a business plan when starting an entrepreneurial
venture. Underlining the key elements of a business plan from an investor
perspective, Professor Tomaselli emphasized that every business plan
should be preceded by a well-crafted Canvas business model for future business,
all with the aim of ensuring consistency between the mission, vision,
strategy and business objectives and financial projections. Students have
also received a lot of advices on how to best present their entrepreneurial
idea to investors in order to provide the necessary financial resources.
