Staff from a Papanui preschool sent out an open invitation to families in the community to join it in celebrating its 40th birthday from 3.30-5.30pm on Friday. The party will commemorate Aratupu Preschool and Nursery’s long dedication to supporting parents in raising their children. Aratupu, formerly known as Fairhaven Daycare Centre, was built in front of the Methodist Mission Children’s home on Harewood Rd in 1978 as a place for young children to visit during the day. When the children’s home stopped operating soon after, Aratupu continued to provide care for children in the community with the help of the Christchurch Methodist Mission. It had a strong focus on supporting young, single mothers to raise and provide for their children. Today, the same focus remains, including a more holistic approach which aims to provide a wraparound service for all families. Most of the children enrolled are from young single parent families who rely on a benefit or have a low income, with many receiving the Work and Income child care subsidy. Aratupu practice lead Marcia Manson-Glover said it is important for staff to play a vital role in “supporting families beyond Aratupu’s walls and creating the best possible home environment as well.” “It takes a village to raise a child, we know that some whanau don’t have support systems or that they struggle to get the support that they need,” said Mrs Manson-Glover. The network of services provided by Aratupu for families includes an on site whanau support worker, community health worker, whanau room, parenting courses, child and parent groups, contracted facilitators and access to all Christchurch Methodist Mission services. Children are also fed with a cooked lunch every day, and Aratupu’s partnership with Pegasus Health ensures all children are enrolled with primary health services such as a GP and dentist. Aratupu was awarded the whanau healthy heart award from the Heart Foundation. The award recognised the preschool as having an environment that promotes healthy eating and physical activity. Mrs Manson-Glover has worked at Aratupu for 10 years and said she has seen generations of families come through. “One particular mother brought her children here and later became a teacher. Now her daughter is about to give birth and she’s on the wait list,” she said. “Another family with six children is about to leave after 18 years. That’s going to be a big loss for us.” “It’s that long-standing relationship at Aratupu that’s always really relied on,” said Mrs Manson-Glover. On Friday, she said she is hoping to see a lot of old faces back and connections. But also wants to meet new people and families to connect with them.
