Young footballers
take on Japan’s best
ON TOUR: Seamus Gallagher and Nicholas Murphy leaving
Christchurch in their new Phoenix gear.
CHRISTCHURCH United
youngsters Seamus Gallagher and
Nicholas Murphy have been on
tour in Japan with the Wellington
Phoenix Soccer School.
The two Christchurch United
under-12 players were invited
by the Phoenix management
to strengthen the squad for a
demanding two-week, 10-match
tour against some of Japan’s
leading clubs.
Christchurch United Academy
director Colin Williamson said
the tour was a unique occasion
for Seamus, who attends St
Thomas of Canterbury College,
and Nicholas, who will start at St
Bede’s College this year, to test
their skills at a higher level.
“Seamus and Nicholas are two
players with great potential and it
will be interesting to see how they
will do playing alongside other
strong players against top youth
teams,” said Williamson.
Japanese football has created
a global reputation for youth
player development and its junior
and senior teams have been
impressive at FIFA tournaments
across all age-groups.
The Phoenix side arrived on
January 10 and the next day
received a stark warning of what
to expect when they were well
beaten 7-1 in their first match
TEAMMATES: Nicholas Murphy (top row, third from right) and
Seamus Gallagher (eighth from right) after their match against
the Yokohama Marinos.
against JEF United, one of Japan’s
leading first division clubs.
The Phoenix lads and their
new Christchurch teammates
bounced back well, beating an
Ichihara BONZ school team, and
then improved even further in a
4-1 win over the local Ichihara
under-12 selection, with Seamus
setting up the third goal.
They then moved to the Tokyo
suburb of Kanagawa where they
played Yokohama Marinos, the
wealthiest club in Japan with
a famous academy that has
produced some of the country’s
biggest names.
The young New Zealanders
showed how much they had
progressed since their heavy first
game defeat by competing well
with their Japanese peers.
It was an even contest at 1-1
at the break, but they allowed
Yokohama to pull away in the
final stages of the 70min game for
an admirable 2-4 defeat.
Phoenix Soccer School director
Jo Dawkins said the boys were in
tears after the match.
“Not because they lost, but
because they knew they deserved
something out of it.”
She said it was one of the closest
results achieved by a junior New
Zealand team.
Things did not get easier as the
young Kiwis faced other J-League
clubs Kawasaki Frontale and
Kashima Reysol.
The players also got a full
cultural immersion while in
Japan, staying three nights
with the families of their
Japanese opponents in the city
of Kashiwa.
Hanleys Essential Dog Roll
Essentials dog rolls have now rebranded to Hanleys Essential
Dog Roll under owner Philippa Hanleys animal nutrition banner.
Philippa has been making natural horse and dog food for over
10 years and lives locally in Geraldine.
Hanleys Essential Dog Roll are not just amazing meat. Philippas
own amino acids blend from Nz whey protein concentrate
are added along with organic minerals, rice and hemp seed oil
from Canterbury. Hemp seed oil has been dubbed ‘nature’s
most perfectly balanced oil’, due to its 3:1 ratio of Omega 6
to Omega 3, deemed an essential requirement for long-term
healthy nutrition. Brown rice flour and other organic minerals
are also added, making the rolls full of clean protein and good
fats. Hanleys contains 18% protein so next time you are buying
your dog roll compare this figure. More protein means you
need to feed less, so you are receiving far better value for
money. Feed less and save more.
It is not just about what is in the rolls. What is missing is also
crucial. No preservatives or chemicals are added. Many pet
owners probably do not realise how hard preservatives are
on a dog’s kidneys and how much damage they may cause. The
business mottos are: ‘enhance all health’ and ‘health before
money’.
Feed just a portion of normal supermarket rolls due to the
superfood ingredients.
