February is Heart Month. No issue could be closer to
our hearts.
Thank you Ifti and Falahat Sheikh
Heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of premature
death for women in Canada. The evidence is clear:
women continue to be under-researched, underdiagnosed,
under-treated, under-supported and underaware
of their risks. As a result, they’re over-dying.
Heart & Stroke is on a mission to make positive changes
in women’s heart and brain health, starting with our
powerful new campaign, #TimeToSeeRed. And that’s just
the beginning. Here are the six key goals we’re working
towards:
- Encourage and invest in research for and about women.
- Mobilize Canadians to take action in support of better
women’s heart and brain health.
- Partner with system leaders, healthcare providers and
people with life experience to improve women’s diagnosis
and treatment.
- Increase awareness of women’s heart and brain health
and influence social norms.
- Facilitate support and connections between women with
life experience, and their care partners.
- Prioritize health reconciliation to help close the gap in
Indigenous and ethnically diverse women’s health.
After many years of volunteering with the Feeling Better
Move Well gentle exercise program, class participants
and CSS staff bid a fond farewell to Ifti and Falahat
Sheikh in December. This couple generously gave their
time for 12 years at the Salvation Army class location,
leading a weekly class with fun and enthusiasm.
Food Tasting:
Registered Dietitians Melanie and Lee will be in the front
lobby on Friday, January 25 (10:30 - 11:30), to share nutrition
information and free food samples. If you're at the
Evergreen, make sure you stop by for a snack and say
hello.
There are all sorts of ways to get involved for this
February’s Heart Month campaign and throughout
the year:
- Become a Heart Month Canvasser
- Organize your own Fundraiser
- Participate in the Co-operators Heart & Stroke Curl for
Heart
