Shrek takes over Kirwee
• By Anan Zaki
BROCK COTTRELL is not your
ordinary teenager.
The 13-year-old of Rolleston is
the district’s very own grumpy
ogre, Shrek.
He’s part of the Kirwee Players,
who will perform Shrek Jr in
April.
Rehearsals for the show started
on January 27, involving 40 children
aged eight to 16.
Brock says it is “nerve-racking”
to play the main character of the
show.
“When I first found out, I was a
bit overwhelmed, but I’m getting
comfortable with the idea. I’ve
been practicing, getting to know
the part.”
The story of the show will be
similar to the film Shrek.
Said Shrek Jr production manager
Courtney Hyde: “It follows
the story of Shrek, a grumpy
ogre, who just wants to be left
alone in his swamp and his trusty
stead, the hilarious Donkey.”
“They are tasked with finding
and rescuing Princess Fiona and
bringing her back to marry the
very short and irritating Lord
Farquaad. During the rescue
Shrek and Princess Fiona fall in
love,” Ms Hyde said.
Brock says he liked that a
grumpy ogre could have a big life.
LEAD: Liam Morris, Lara Chiswell and Brock Cotterell will star
in the Kirwee Players show, Shrek Jr.
He’s also watched the movie.
“I first watched it when I was
nine and then I re-watched it
when I was older and realised all
the underlying adult jokes in it,”
he said.
Brock hasn’t told too many
people about his new role yet.
“When they rang to tell me
what part I had gotten, mum was
really excited. I probably was
pretty calm on the outside but
inside I was super excited and
happy that I had got the lead.”
•Shrek Jr will be at the
Kirwee Community Hall on
April 12,13 and 14. Ticket
announcements are on the
Facebook page, Kirwee
A POTENTIAL solution to curb
feral and stray cats will be put to
the district council next month.
Springfield township
committee secretary Sean Ellis
is calling for a cat protection
programme to reduce stray cats
across the district, and says he
has backing from cat rescuers.
He will present the proposal
to the district council’s next
meeting, on March 13.
But before stray cats can
be controlled, Mr Ellis says
domesticated must be micro
chipped.
“We also need a cat drop off
centre, a place where stray and
feral cats once trapped can be
taken and assessed . . . microchipped,
de-sexed and re-homed,
if at all possible,” Mr Ellis said.
Selwyn Times reported last
month that Mr Ellis called for
the district council to be a leader
in the predator free movement.
Following the article, Mr Ellis
said he received threatening
phone calls, but says they weren’t
serious and doesn’t want it to
distract people from the subject
Solution for
stray cat issues
of controlling cats.
“It’s a really emotional thing
and I want to keep the emotion
out of it,” he said.
Feral cats posed a danger to
native bird life, Mr Ellis said.
“Just think about it, if it was a
dog left roaming about killing
everything smaller than itself,
how long would it be before we
acted?”
The district council is
currently working on a report
on dealing with predator cats,
which is due next month.
A cat rescuer in the district,
who did not want to named in
fear of receiving threats, says she
supports Mr Ellis’ proposal.
“Most people have cats or
like cats. It’s about making sure
every cat in Selwyn has someone
responsible for it,” the woman
said. “If it’s a stray cat it’s about
getting it a home. Get someone
who’s responsible for it, make
sure it’s de-sexed.”
She said controlling cats is an
emotional subject.
“People love cats or hate cats.
It gets everybody fired up,” the
woman said.
