FENZ deputy principal rural
fire officer north Canterbury
Dale Wilhelm said he wants to
spread the message about applying
for permits.
“With Fire and Emergency
becoming a nationwide organisation,
we’ve been trying to
effectively have the same rules
across the country,” he said.
Previously, each district had
different rules around stubble
burns, Mr Wilhelm said.
The permits give FENZ the
ability to contact farmers who
regularly burn crops, if the
weather conditions are not
ideal for stubble burns, Mr
Wilhelm said.
Said Mr Wilhelm: “Anyone
looking to burn stubble can
apply now for a permit to see
them through the next few
months.”
Mr Taggart says Federated
Farmers won’t help farmers
who don’t use permits.
“If they [farmers] run into
problems with prosecution because
they’ve been burning in a
restricted fire season, Federated
Farmers won’t be available for
assistance in that case,” Mr
Taggart said.
High temperatures
pose extreme risk
• By Anan Zaki
THE FIRE restrictions come at
the hottest time of year, the high
temperatures pose an extreme risk,
firefighters say.
Two weeks ago – as temperatures
hovered above 30 deg C – Hororata
firefighters had to put out a fire
which reignited from the site of a
stubble burn originally lit in August
last year.
Hororata chief fire officer Bruce
Sayer urged farmers to re-check
old stubble burns from the past
few months as the summer heat
intensified.
Two fire trucks from Hororata
spent two hours dampening down
the fire on Struie Rd.
“The farm owner had seen the
smoke and it was really close to a
cereal crop. So it could have been a
lot worse,” Mr Sayer said.
“It was just a pile of ash and log
that reignited, so definitely keep an
eye out and recheck burns in recent
months because it’s surprising how
long the fire can stay in the centre.”
Leeston chief fire officer Lloyd
Clausen warned rural residents not
to use lawn mowers or other equipment
which could create sparks.
“In the heat of the day, early
morning to late afternoon they should
not be doing any work that could
create sparks,” Mr Clausen said.
LONG STANDING district
councillor Debra Hasson won’t
be standing for mayor this year.
In spite of contesting the last
mayoral race in 2016, Cr Hasson
said she would prefer not to stand
against a sitting mayor.
She heaped praise on
incumbent Mayor Sam
Broughton, who last month
confirmed he will stand in
October’s elections.
“I’m not standing for the
mayoralty,” Cr Hasson said.
“The current mayor is doing
a really, really good job of being
out there and representing
Selwyn to a whole lot of the
younger generation,” she said.
“The only time I have stood for
the mayoralty is when it has been
up for grabs for everybody.”
In 2016, then sitting mayor
Kelvin Coe did not stand for
re-election.
But Cr Hasson will stand again
to be a district councillor for the
Springs Ward, a role she has held
since 1995.
She said the district council
needs to continue to “embrace”
new technologies, Maori culture
“A reason I want to stand [for
it’s so valuable. New people
[councillors] have come in but
it’s just that long standing local
Cr Hasson received 1015 votes,
