CHARLES COUNTY Local guides receive national awards Two certified interpretive guides from The Historic Daniel Boone Home are being honored by the National Association for Interpretation [NAI] Region 6 for their achievements in front-line interpretation. Lead Interpreter William Ray, of St. Charles, will receive the NAI 2018 Master/Distinguished Professional Interpreter Award. Living History Interpreter Shirley Pecoraro, of Cottleville, will receive the NAI 2018 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer William Ray Award. Both awards will be accepted at the annual conference in Wichita, Kansas, later this month. Over the past two years, Boone Home interpreters have been honored with five NAI Awards, four regional and one national. These award-winning interpreters ensure that visitors to the Boone Home walk away with a memorable and educational experience. William Ray has been educating and entertaining the community with historical interpretation for the past 25 years. Serving as the park’s lead interpreter for the past nine years, he has become a mentor to staff and volunteers when it comes to telling the Boone family’s story. Ray utilizes effective methods of interpretive techniques to engage audiences as he tours the home and village grounds during special events. He also developed the curriculum for K-12 programs offered to students who visit the Boone Home on school field trips and Home School Days. He is an avid fiddle, banjo, and dulcimer player, and leads the Traditional Music Days event held at the site in the summer. Shirley Pecoraro has been a devoted volunteer for the past 12 years at The Historic Daniel Boone Home, and has donated hundreds of hours of service to enlightening Shirley Pecoraro the public about the history of the Boone family. Public invited to Government Expo St. Charles County Government is partnering with Mid Rivers Mall to offer the St. Charles County Government Expo from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, in Center Court on the mall’s lower level. Representatives from more than 15 county departments will be on hand to talk about services provided the county and programs available in the community. The public is invited to explore job opportunities, register to vote, ask questions about property assessments and taxes, develop a family emergency plan and find out about events coming to the Family Arena. The Public Health Department will offer heart health screenings and families can enjoy the pet adoption area or make a craft with the parks department. Vehicles and equipment from the St. Charles County Police Department, including Officer Bailey, the department’s robot dog, will be available for viewing. Guests also can register to win attendance prizes, including a cabin rental at Klondike Park. Tax preparation assistance available United Way 2-1-1 is partnering with local tax coalitions to provide free tax preparation services to area families with a household income of $55,000 or less in 2018. Last year, the partnership filed more than 18,600 tax returns in the St. Louis region, helping local low- and middleincome families receive nearly $18 million in tax refunds. Anyone interested in receiving tax preparation help and who is eligible under the $55,000 household income threshold may contact United Way by dialing 2-1-1 or visiting 211helps.org for information on qualifications, locations, dates and a list of documents required for services. Sites operate on an appointment or walk-in basis. The following locations, dates and times are available for Saturday walk-in sites. Soft skills are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively with other people and include work ethic, team work, time management, problem solving and communication. “In the last decade, regional employers have voiced ongoing concern that some job applicants and existing staff struggle with soft skills,” said Scott J. Drachnik, director of the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development and the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County. “This is evidenced by the results of the annual State of St. Louis Workforce Report conducted by St. Louis Community College and the State of Missouri. “Our goal, through this local survey, is to better understand the soft skills training needs of employers in St. Charles County and to identify best practices of local employers who are actively training and mentoring their staff in the area of soft skills.” The survey is being conducted by the St. Charles County Soft Skills Task Force, a sub-committee of the St. Charles County Workforce Development Board. Drachnik said the task force has listened to presentations and conducted research over the past year to learn how soft skills training is interwoven in K-12 education, trade schools, colleges and universities. The task force has identified the need for employers of all sizes to emphasize the importance of soft skills and provide the ongoing tools and training at the work place to help people grow and improve where needed. Drachnik said regular life skills workshops and training are available through the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County and others in the community, such as Connections to Success, but that, through the survey, the task force will be able to determine what other programs are needed. Feedback from the survey will be used by the Job Center and its educational and business partners to shape workforce efforts in the community. CCFR comes to the aid of DASA A check for $2,500 was presented to the Disabled Athletes Sports Association [DASA] on Jan. 29 by the Central County Fire & Rescue [CCFR] Community Outreach Committee. Capt. David Maupin, chair of the committee, presented DASA with the check, which represented proceeds of a mud volleyball tournament hosted by CCFR last summer. DASA is a St. Peters-based nonprofit that promotes adaptive sports and activities to individuals with physical, visual and hearing disabilities. “We are so proud of our CCFR crews and St. Peters community for making these community outreach efforts possible,” CCFR Asst. Chief Steve Brown said. “DASA has become one of our primary charitable partners, and we’ve been truly inspired by their hard work to make sports and fitness an option for all. We can’t wait to see the wonderful things they do with this donation!” Teams will be able to register at centralcountyfire.org soon for the July 13 mud volleyball event.
