HYDROCHINA Kunming Engineering Corporation
HD Hydropower Station
Yunnan Province, China
The HD hydropower station located in southwestern China is a concrete gravity
dam with a maximum height of 203 meters, a total capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters,
and an installed capacity of 1,900 megawatts. It covers an area of approximately 20
square kilometers, with engineering production zones, living quarters, processing
plants, and other auxiliary facilities linked by a complex network of roads. The project
will also provide flood control, irrigation, increased water supply, and soil and water
conservation. The hydropower station’s estimated cost is approximately US $3 billion
and its construction is expected to take almost seven years.
A project of this magnitude includes
complicated retaining structures,
underground factories, and diversionary
structures, as well as very large, complex
equipment and a multitude of supporting
utilities. HYDROCHINA Kunming is using
model-based workflows to support
collaborative design, coordination, and
planning across the various disciplines
involved in the project, including surveying,
hydrotechnics, mechanical and electrical
engineering, and construction. The
company relies on Autodesk ® Infrastructure
Modeler software for conceptual
design and project visualization,
Autodesk ® Revit ® Structure software to
design hydraulic structures, Autodesk ®
Revit ® MEP and Autodesk ® Inventor ®
software for mechatronic and metal structures
design, Autodesk ® Revit ® Architecture
sofware for building design, and AutoCAD ®
Civil 3D ® software for surveying, hydrological
design, and construction. The team also uses
Autodesk ® Navisworks ® Manage software
for virtual project review, coordination,
and 4D construction simulation.
HYDROCHINA Kunming developed
intelligent 3D models for a range of activities
such as multi-discipline engineering design,
volume calculations, clash detection, and
project visualizations that helped inform
better design decisions. Model-based design
also resulted in more efficient drawing
production and higher quality, more
informative construction documentation.
Clark County Public Works Department
Salmon Creek Interchange
Salmon Creek, Washington
The Salmon Creek Interchange project is a joint effort between Washington State
Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Clark County Public Works Department,
and is one of the biggest public works projects in Clark County history. The
project includes the construction of a new interchange between Interstates 5 and
205 in southwest Washington, as well as other improvements to ramps and local
roads. Clark County was responsible for the design and construction of all of the
elements needed on both sides of the I-5 and I-205 freeways to facilitate the new
interchange under design by WSDOT.
Clark County faced strict deadlines as
construction funds were tied to specific
construction seasons and the County’s
work had to be finished before WSDOT
could start its construction. In addition,
late in the design process WSDOT determined
that due to groundwater issues,
the interchange must go over the freeway
instead of the original tunnel strategy—
requiring the County to completely
redesign the freeway frontages. Clark
County used AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® software
to help reduce its project design and
redesign times, deliver more accurate
construction documents, and meet
its deadlines.
The County used the dynamic nature
of the corridor model to more easily
design and adjust centerline profiles,
curbs, and ramps. The team also created
a 3D infrastructure model of all the pipe
networks for the new drainage system as
well as the complex web of existing utilities
(including gas, storm sewer, water,
sanitary, and fiber optic). The team used
this model to help keep all the utilities,
the proposed drainage system, the
corridor designs, and associated documentation
in-sync with each other at all
times to minimize design conflicts and
improve quality. This model-based workflow
also helped construction personnel
better visualize the County’s design to
help expedite construction.
