The Netherlands
Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch agency responsible for the country’s infrastructure, is
in the midst of a major program to complete the A4 motorway between Schiedam
and Delft. The project will provide a continuous highway between Rotterdam and
The Hague, and relieve chronic traffic congestion on adjacent highways and local
roads currently used by motorists traveling between the two cities. The 7-kilometer
road includes both at-grade and sunken sections, as well as a 2-kilometer land
tunnel. Rijkswaterstaat selected A4ALL—a consortium comprising Boskalis,
Heijmans, and VolkerWessels—to design and build the new highway.
The consortium is using BIM processes
supported by Autodesk ® products—including
AutoCAD ® Map 3D, Autodesk ® Infrastructure
Modeler, AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , Autodesk ®
3ds Max ® Design, Autodesk ® Navisworks ®
Manage, Autodesk ® Design Review, and
Autodesk ® Revit ® Structure software—to
help safely and efficiently deliver a highquality
infrastructure project. A4ALL
combined design information and existing
conditions data (including point clouds

of bridges and overpasses in a particu-
larly complex interchange) to create an
intelligent 3D model for improved
coordination, planning, and review.
The model was also used for various
analyses including sun reflection and
driver sight lines, and is linked to the
project’s scheduling system to simulate
construction phasing to help more
predictably plan field activities.
Parsons Brinckerhoff
State Route 99 (SR 99) Tunnel Project, Construction Simulation
Seattle, Washington
Due to concerns over seismic safety, Washington Department of Transportation
(WSDOT) is replacing the central waterfront section of Seattle’s aging Alaskan
Way Viaduct with a bored tunnel beneath the city. The project will move SR 99
highway traffic underground, reconnect the street grid at the ends of the
tunnel, and remove the viaduct along Seattle’s downtown waterfront. As general
engineering consultant, Parsons Brinckerhoff served for 10 years as lead strategic
advisor to WSDOT. The firm also led a public involvement program to help
define and communicate project goals and develop consensus—creating 3D digital
models of the project and the city that were used to help determine the viability of
proposed concepts and generate supporting project visualizations.
More recently Parsons Brinckerhoff utilized
its 3D project models and Autodesk ®
3ds Max ® Design software to create
interactive simulations used by WSDOT
to help the public visualize how the
tunnel portals will be built and help
drivers visualize current and future
detour configurations during construction.
The firm combined multiple renderings
into one interface to make the
progression of detours both intuitive
and informative. The use of 3D
modeling is helping the firm more
quickly and easily update the renderings
to reflect schedule changes.
