A4ALL Consortium<br />

Highway A4<br />

The Netherlands<br />

Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch agency responsible for the country’s <strong>in</strong>frastructure, is<br />

<strong>in</strong> the midst of a major program to complete the A4 motorway between Schiedam<br />

and Delft. The project will provide a cont<strong>in</strong>uous highway between Rotterdam and<br />

The Hague, and relieve chronic traffic congestion on adjacent highways and local<br />

roads currently used by motorists travel<strong>in</strong>g between the two cities. The 7-kilometer<br />

road <strong>in</strong>cludes both at-grade and sunken sections, as well as a 2-kilometer land<br />

tunnel. Rijkswaterstaat selected A4ALL—a consortium compris<strong>in</strong>g Boskalis,<br />

Heijmans, and VolkerWessels—to design and build the new highway.<br />

The consortium is us<strong>in</strong>g BIM processes<br />

supported by <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® products—<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

AutoCAD ® Map 3D, <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® <strong>Infrastructure</strong><br />

Modeler, AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , <strong>Autodesk</strong> ®<br />

3ds Max ® Design, <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Navisworks ®<br />

Manage, <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Design Review, and<br />

<strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Revit ® Structure software—to<br />

help safely and efficiently deliver a highquality<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure project. A4ALL<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed design <strong>in</strong>formation and exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

conditions data (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t clouds<br />

<strong>2012</strong> <strong>Excellence</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Infrastructure</strong><br />

of bridges and overpasses <strong>in</strong> a particu-<br />

larly complex <strong>in</strong>terchange) to create an<br />

<strong>in</strong>telligent 3D model for improved<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ation, plann<strong>in</strong>g, and review.<br />

The model was also used for various<br />

analyses <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sun reflection and<br />

driver sight l<strong>in</strong>es, and is l<strong>in</strong>ked to the<br />

project’s schedul<strong>in</strong>g system to simulate<br />

construction phas<strong>in</strong>g to help more<br />

predictably plan field activities.<br />

Parsons Br<strong>in</strong>ckerhoff<br />

State Route 99 (SR 99) Tunnel Project, Construction Simulation<br />

Seattle, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

Due to concerns over seismic safety, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Department of Transportation<br />

(WSDOT) is replac<strong>in</strong>g the central waterfront section of Seattle’s ag<strong>in</strong>g Alaskan<br />

Way Viaduct with a bored tunnel beneath the city. The project will move SR 99<br />

highway traffic underground, reconnect the street grid at the ends of the<br />

tunnel, and remove the viaduct along Seattle’s downtown waterfront. As general<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g consultant, Parsons Br<strong>in</strong>ckerhoff served for 10 years as lead strategic<br />

advisor to WSDOT. The firm also led a public <strong>in</strong>volvement program to help<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e and communicate project goals and develop consensus—creat<strong>in</strong>g 3D digital<br />

models of the project and the city that were used to help determ<strong>in</strong>e the viability of<br />

proposed concepts and generate support<strong>in</strong>g project visualizations.<br />

More recently Parsons Br<strong>in</strong>ckerhoff utilized<br />

its 3D project models and <strong>Autodesk</strong> ®<br />

3ds Max ® Design software to create<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractive simulations used by WSDOT<br />

to help the public visualize how the<br />

tunnel portals will be built and help<br />

drivers visualize current and future<br />

detour configurations dur<strong>in</strong>g construction.<br />

The firm comb<strong>in</strong>ed multiple render<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>in</strong>to one <strong>in</strong>terface to make the<br />

progression of detours both <strong>in</strong>tuitive<br />

and <strong>in</strong>formative. The use of 3D<br />

model<strong>in</strong>g is help<strong>in</strong>g the firm more<br />

quickly and easily update the render<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

to reflect schedule changes.<br />
