The M25 Design-Build-F<strong>in</strong>ance-Operate (DBFO) project was awarded to Connect<br />

Plus—a consortium of Skanska, Balfour Beatty, Atk<strong>in</strong>s, and Egis Road Operation<br />

UK—to widen sections of the M25 highway circl<strong>in</strong>g London and to operate and<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the road for 30 years. The northeastern quadrant of the M25 has <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

widen<strong>in</strong>g 17 miles of the motorway between junctions 27 to 30, with the last section<br />

of the project featur<strong>in</strong>g a complicated railway cross<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The design-build jo<strong>in</strong>t venture of Atk<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

Skanska, and Balfour Beatty used<br />

AutoCAD ® , AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® ,<br />

<strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Navisworks ® Manage, and<br />

<strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Navisworks ® Freedom software<br />

to help meet an aggressive design-build<br />

schedule.The team used design <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed with exist<strong>in</strong>g draw<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

laser-scanned data of exist<strong>in</strong>g conditions<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g structures, utilities, and topography<br />

to create more accurate, <strong>in</strong>tegrated 3D<br />

project models. These multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

models were used dur<strong>in</strong>g design and<br />

construction for communication, clash<br />

detection, visualization, design review,<br />

and plann<strong>in</strong>g. In addition, the models<br />

helped project stakeholders and the<br />

general public better understand the<br />

project before construction. The models<br />

were also l<strong>in</strong>ked with the project’s<br />

document management system and<br />

helped on site eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

construction personnel visualize up-todate<br />

project <strong>in</strong>formation when assess<strong>in</strong>g<br />

how best to perform construction tasks.<br />
