Columbia University is building a new 17-acre campus in the Manhattanville manufacturing
zone of West Harlem in New York City. When complete, the mixed-use
development will feature more than 6.8 million square feet of space for teaching,
research, recreation, and the arts, as well as underground parking, waterfront parks,
and new facilities for civic, cultural, and commercial activity.
The university tasked Stantec with infrastructure
design, approvals, and coordination in
support of the project’s parks, public spaces,
and below- and above-grade facilities. The
complex project includes a labyrinth of
below-grade pedestrian hallways, mechanical
spaces, and classrooms, and a site with widely
varying elevations—resulting in the need
for precise coordination. Stantec is using
AutoCAD ® , AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , Autodesk ®
Navisworks ® Simulate, Autodesk ®
Navisworks ® Manage, Autodesk ® Revit ®
Structure, and Autodesk ® Revit ® Architecture
software for design and documentation,
as well as the development of a 3D
infrastructure model for spatial analysis,
collaboration, and coordination. The firm
created an existing infrastructure model—
including telephone duct banks, sewer, water,
gas, and electric utilities—by incorporating
utility company record drawings, standard
survey data, and a laser scan of most of
the project’s perimeter. The model also
includes a street surface (TIN), generated
from the survey and laser scan data. Stantec
is using this model to help coordinate
the connections to the proposed utilities
and buildings. In addition, the project
team is using the model to support visual
cross-discipline collaboration and coordination.
As the project progresses, Stantec
incorporates design models (created
by other project consultants) into the
infrastructure model, regardless of
the authoring software used by the
consultants. This integrated project
model is facilitating whole-project
visualization, clash detection, and
construction planning.
