Columbia University is build<strong>in</strong>g a new 17-acre campus <strong>in</strong> the Manhattanville manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
zone of West Harlem <strong>in</strong> New York City. When complete, the mixed-use<br />
development will feature more than 6.8 million square feet of space for teach<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
research, recreation, and the arts, as well as underground park<strong>in</strong>g, waterfront parks,<br />
and new facilities for civic, cultural, and commercial activity.<br />
The university tasked Stantec with <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
design, approvals, and coord<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong><br />
support of the project’s parks, public spaces,<br />
and below- and above-grade facilities. The<br />
complex project <strong>in</strong>cludes a labyr<strong>in</strong>th of<br />
below-grade pedestrian hallways, mechanical<br />
spaces, and classrooms, and a site with widely<br />
vary<strong>in</strong>g elevations—result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the need<br />
for precise coord<strong>in</strong>ation. Stantec is us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
AutoCAD ® , AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , <strong>Autodesk</strong> ®<br />
Navisworks ® Simulate, <strong>Autodesk</strong> ®<br />
Navisworks ® Manage, <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Revit ®<br />
Structure, and <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Revit ® Architecture<br />
software for design and documentation,<br />
as well as the development of a 3D<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure model for spatial analysis,<br />
collaboration, and coord<strong>in</strong>ation. The firm<br />
created an exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>frastructure model—<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g telephone duct banks, sewer, water,<br />
gas, and electric utilities—by <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
utility company record draw<strong>in</strong>gs, standard<br />
survey data, and a laser scan of most of<br />
the project’s perimeter. The model also<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes a street surface (TIN), generated<br />
from the survey and laser scan data. Stantec<br />
is us<strong>in</strong>g this model to help coord<strong>in</strong>ate<br />
the connections to the proposed utilities<br />
and build<strong>in</strong>gs. In addition, the project<br />
team is us<strong>in</strong>g the model to support visual<br />
cross-discipl<strong>in</strong>e collaboration and coord<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
As the project progresses, Stantec<br />
<strong>in</strong>corporates design models (created<br />
by other project consultants) <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure model, regardless of<br />
the author<strong>in</strong>g software used by the<br />
consultants. This <strong>in</strong>tegrated project<br />
model is facilitat<strong>in</strong>g whole-project<br />
visualization, clash detection, and<br />
construction plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
