Noman Cole Water Reuse Project
Fairfax County, Virginia
Fairfax County is reusing treated wastewater after installing a new reclaimed
water distribution system for its Noman Cole Pollution Control Plant. This green
project uses reclaimed water from the existing plant for irrigation of local
parks and for cooling purposes at a local waste-to-energy facility. Dewberry
was responsible for the engineering design of pump stations, elevated water
tanks, and approximately five miles of large diameter (12" to 30") pipeline
through an urban corridor.
Dewberry used AutoCAD ® Map 3D,
Autodesk ® Infrastructure Modeler,
AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , and Autodesk ®
3ds Max ® Design software for efficient
design and plans production. The alignment
of the pipeline follows major
highways, crosses multiple waterways,
passes under railroad and interstate
highway bridges, and follows complex
terrain profiles. As a design-build
job, Dewberry’s use of a dynamic
model environment helped the firm
quickly develop deliverables to meet
accelerated design, plan approval, and
construction schedules. Modeling the
entire alignment in context helped
the design-build team construct
the project without a single utility
conflict. Visual representations of the
model helped the team and the client
better understand and evaluate the
design for more informed decision
making and more efficient construction.
Freese and Nichols
Clearfork Main Street Bridge
Fort Worth, Texas
The City of Fort Worth is building a new roadway and bridge over the Trinity River,
in a planned mixed-use development area that also includes pedestrian trails and
flood control levees. The bridge is 550 feet long with a center span of 220 feet and
will carry two lanes of traffic in each direction using a unique system of precast
concrete beam segments spliced together with post-tensioned steel strands,
creating a streamlined continuous structure for much less cost than typical steel
bridges. The project also features a separate pedestrian bridge suspended below
the vehicular bridge, featuring river overlooks and ramps that intersect with
trails on both sides of the river.
Autodesk ® 3ds Max ® software helped
Freese and Nichols develop an aesthetically
pleasing and cost-effective design
that successfully addresses floodway
requirements and provides pedestrian
linkages. The firm created models for
several design iterations and generated
digital renderings from those models
for client review. The models were also
used for shadow studies, helping the
designers see how the structure’s
shadows could affect foliage growth
on the bridge embankments in order
to help address sustainability concerns.
Renderings also helped educate local
community and business stakeholders
about the project and planned
construction.
