Dewberry<br />

Noman Cole Water Reuse Project<br />

Fairfax County, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia<br />

Fairfax County is reus<strong>in</strong>g treated wastewater after <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g a new reclaimed<br />

water distribution system for its Noman Cole Pollution Control Plant. This green<br />

project uses reclaimed water from the exist<strong>in</strong>g plant for irrigation of local<br />

parks and for cool<strong>in</strong>g purposes at a local waste-to-energy facility. Dewberry<br />

was responsible for the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g design of pump stations, elevated water<br />

tanks, and approximately five miles of large diameter (12" to 30") pipel<strong>in</strong>e<br />

through an urban corridor.<br />

Dewberry used AutoCAD ® Map 3D,<br />

<strong>Autodesk</strong> ® <strong>Infrastructure</strong> Modeler,<br />

AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , and <strong>Autodesk</strong> ®<br />

3ds Max ® Design software for efficient<br />

design and plans production. The alignment<br />

of the pipel<strong>in</strong>e follows major<br />

highways, crosses multiple waterways,<br />

passes under railroad and <strong>in</strong>terstate<br />

highway bridges, and follows complex<br />

terra<strong>in</strong> profiles. As a design-build<br />

job, Dewberry’s use of a dynamic<br />

model environment helped the firm<br />

quickly develop deliverables to meet<br />

accelerated design, plan approval, and<br />

construction schedules. Model<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

entire alignment <strong>in</strong> context helped<br />

the design-build team construct<br />

the project without a s<strong>in</strong>gle utility<br />

conflict. Visual representations of the<br />

model helped the team and the client<br />

better understand and evaluate the<br />

design for more <strong>in</strong>formed decision<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g and more efficient construction.<br />

Freese and Nichols<br />

Clearfork Ma<strong>in</strong> Street Bridge<br />

Fort Worth, Texas<br />

The City of Fort Worth is build<strong>in</strong>g a new roadway and bridge over the Tr<strong>in</strong>ity River,<br />

<strong>in</strong> a planned mixed-use development area that also <strong>in</strong>cludes pedestrian trails and<br />

flood control levees. The bridge is 550 feet long with a center span of 220 feet and<br />

will carry two lanes of traffic <strong>in</strong> each direction us<strong>in</strong>g a unique system of precast<br />

concrete beam segments spliced together with post-tensioned steel strands,<br />

creat<strong>in</strong>g a streaml<strong>in</strong>ed cont<strong>in</strong>uous structure for much less cost than typical steel<br />

bridges. The project also features a separate pedestrian bridge suspended below<br />

the vehicular bridge, featur<strong>in</strong>g river overlooks and ramps that <strong>in</strong>tersect with<br />

trails on both sides of the river.<br />

<strong>Autodesk</strong> ® 3ds Max ® software helped<br />

Freese and Nichols develop an aesthetically<br />

pleas<strong>in</strong>g and cost-effective design<br />

that successfully addresses floodway<br />

requirements and provides pedestrian<br />

l<strong>in</strong>kages. The firm created models for<br />

several design iterations and generated<br />

digital render<strong>in</strong>gs from those models<br />

for client review. The models were also<br />

used for shadow studies, help<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

designers see how the structure’s<br />

shadows could affect foliage growth<br />

on the bridge embankments <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to help address susta<strong>in</strong>ability concerns.<br />

Render<strong>in</strong>gs also helped educate local<br />

community and bus<strong>in</strong>ess stakeholders<br />

about the project and planned<br />

construction.<br />
