Total Water Management Plan (TWMP) Pipel<strong>in</strong>e Project – Segment 4<br />

Jacksonville, Florida<br />

The TWMP Pipel<strong>in</strong>e Project <strong>in</strong>volves the construction of a water transmission<br />

pipel<strong>in</strong>e between the two major water grids of Jacksonville Electric Authority<br />

(JEA). The pipel<strong>in</strong>e will transport excess water supply from the north to the<br />

south side of JEA’s service area to better meet <strong>in</strong>creased potable water demand.<br />

This project also promotes conservation of the Floridan Aquifer by lessen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

water resource withdrawal demand from JEA’s southern raw water wells. Hatch<br />

Mott MacDonald is provid<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g services for Segment 4 of the<br />

pipel<strong>in</strong>e, which consists of 30-<strong>in</strong>ch pipe routed along exist<strong>in</strong>g roads and 24-<strong>in</strong>ch<br />

pipe under a major state highway.<br />

Hatch Mott McDonald used AutoCAD ®<br />

Civil 3D ® software to facilitate the<br />

creation of plans and profiles show<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

exact vertical position of the pipel<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g utility cross<strong>in</strong>gs. This helped the<br />

firm design around the exist<strong>in</strong>g utilities,<br />

avoid<strong>in</strong>g their removal and re<strong>in</strong>stallation<br />

and therefore m<strong>in</strong>imiz<strong>in</strong>g service<br />

disruptions to nearby bus<strong>in</strong>esses and<br />

residences. A model-based design<br />

approach enabled clearance check<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and helped guide the contractor on<br />

precise position<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g construction.<br />

In addition, the firm used the pipel<strong>in</strong>e<br />

model to help identify areas where<br />

hand digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the root zones of<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g trees was needed to protect<br />

the trees.<br />

Parsons Br<strong>in</strong>ckerhoff<br />

New Haven Harbor Cross<strong>in</strong>g Corridor Improvement Program<br />

New Haven, Connecticut<br />

The I-95 New Haven Harbor Cross<strong>in</strong>g Corridor Improvement Program is a multimodal<br />

transportation project that features public transit enhancements and<br />

roadway improvements along 7.2 miles of I-95 <strong>in</strong> New Haven, Connecticut. The<br />

Program <strong>in</strong>cludes the replacement of the exist<strong>in</strong>g I-95 cross<strong>in</strong>g over New Haven<br />

Harbor with a new ten-lane extradosed signature bridge—the Pearl Harbor<br />

Memorial Bridge.<br />

As part of program management for<br />

the project, Parsons Br<strong>in</strong>ckerhoff used<br />

AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® 3ds Max ®<br />

Design, <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Navisworks ® Simulate,<br />

and <strong>Autodesk</strong> ® Navisworks ® Manage<br />

software to develop models for more realistic<br />

stakeholder communication, technical<br />

analysis and illustration, and visualization<br />

of construction stag<strong>in</strong>g and schedul<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Render<strong>in</strong>gs and animations produced from<br />

3D models were used to show stakeholders<br />

the ultimate plan and vision for the<br />

project when completed.<br />

By l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g the 3D models to project<br />

schedules, the team was able to use<br />

4D model<strong>in</strong>g to illustrate complex<br />

construction stag<strong>in</strong>g of the entire<br />

corridor. The 4D model was also<br />

used to help validate and illustrate<br />

the many traffic shifts, detours, and<br />

associated road closures that will be<br />

part of the construction process,<br />

and to support the plann<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

communication of proposed construction<br />

activities and equipment logistics for<br />

many of the structures on the project.<br />
