Total Water Management Plan (TWMP) Pipeline Project – Segment 4
Jacksonville, Florida
The TWMP Pipeline Project involves the construction of a water transmission
pipeline between the two major water grids of Jacksonville Electric Authority
(JEA). The pipeline will transport excess water supply from the north to the
south side of JEA’s service area to better meet increased potable water demand.
This project also promotes conservation of the Floridan Aquifer by lessening
water resource withdrawal demand from JEA’s southern raw water wells. Hatch
Mott MacDonald is providing engineering services for Segment 4 of the
pipeline, which consists of 30-inch pipe routed along existing roads and 24-inch
pipe under a major state highway.
Hatch Mott McDonald used AutoCAD ®
Civil 3D ® software to facilitate the
creation of plans and profiles showing the
exact vertical position of the pipeline and
existing utility crossings. This helped the
firm design around the existing utilities,
avoiding their removal and reinstallation
and therefore minimizing service
disruptions to nearby businesses and
residences. A model-based design
approach enabled clearance checking
and helped guide the contractor on
precise positioning during construction.
In addition, the firm used the pipeline
model to help identify areas where
hand digging in the root zones of
existing trees was needed to protect
the trees.

New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program
New Haven, Connecticut
The I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program is a multimodal
transportation project that features public transit enhancements and
roadway improvements along 7.2 miles of I-95 in New Haven, Connecticut. The
Program includes the replacement of the existing I-95 crossing over New Haven
Harbor with a new ten-lane extradosed signature bridge—the Pearl Harbor
Memorial Bridge.
As part of program management for
the project, Parsons Brinckerhoff used
AutoCAD ® Civil 3D ® , Autodesk ® 3ds Max ®
Design, Autodesk ® Navisworks ® Simulate,
and Autodesk ® Navisworks ® Manage
software to develop models for more realistic
stakeholder communication, technical
analysis and illustration, and visualization
of construction staging and scheduling.
Renderings and animations produced from
3D models were used to show stakeholders
the ultimate plan and vision for the
project when completed.
By linking the 3D models to project
schedules, the team was able to use
4D modeling to illustrate complex
construction staging of the entire
corridor. The 4D model was also
used to help validate and illustrate
the many traffic shifts, detours, and
associated road closures that will be
part of the construction process,
and to support the planning and
communication of proposed construction
activities and equipment logistics for
many of the structures on the project.
