A significant date for your diary is the 

annual Milnrow and Newhey Carnival which 

takes place this year on Saturday 22nd 

June. This year’s theme will be ‘At the 

Movies’ and it looks set to be another 

fantastic event which is not to be missed.

PACE EGGING IN ROCHDALE 

As long ago as the 16th century pageants 

featuring St George were performed in the 

streets of England. Thomas Hardy in ‘The 

Return of the Native’ described a battle 

between St George and a Turkish knight 

and doctors plying their trade in miracle 

plays were well known in the 15th century. 

The West Country had versions of a 

Mummers Play with fixed characters 

although it has been suggested that the Pace 

Egg has roots in Northern Sword Dance 

rituals. Others claim that Mummers Plays 

originated in fertility rites or the ritual of a 

pagan ‘waking of Winter from sleep’ 

although few, if any, records exist to support 

its existence before medieval times. Rather, 

Mummers Plays began between 1700 and 

1750. In the 19th century what were known 

as Raper Dancers feature deight boys 

performing a Mummers Play in Brighouse 

on Easter Monday, setting Easter as the time 

for Pace Egging in the North of England. 

Although once witnessed throughout 

England, its most recent manifestations have 

been in Lancashire and West Yorkshire, 

especially in Rochdale. 

What had been once an exclusively male 

and adult tradition was passed in the 19th 

century to children and young people to carry 

it forward and in Rochdale, Pace Egging 

became an important part of the Easter 

celebrations with young boys from the same 

streets, neighbourhood or from a school 

seeing it as an opportunity to act out a 

traditional play and make money besides. 

Many of the plays which constituted the Pace 

Egg were not written down but passed on 

through families and generations of friends. 

There were, however, common features. A 

sweeper would enter first to make a circle 

for the play and then characters would enter 

one by one telling the tale of mock battles, 

death and revival. St George would take on 

such characters as (bold) Slasher, the Prince 

of Paradine and the King of Egypt whilst 

comic interruptions would come in different 

versions from the Fool, Beelzebub, Dirty Bet 

or Toss Pot. A hobby horse and a dragon 

featured in the early Rochdale plays and in 

some versions (certainly the one at 

Moorhouse School Milnrow in the 1950’s) 

patron saints of the British Isles would 

feature and fight. The main characters 

however were St George, enemy knights, a 

Doctor with a top hat and long frock coat 

carrying a bag with his medicines, and Dirty 

Bet sometimes played by the most timid boy 

dressed up as a woman with a bonnet and 

a basket to collect money or – sometimes – 

eggs from the audience. Dirty Bet, a Rochdale 

alternative to Beelzebub, Devil Doubt or Toss 

Pot, would conclude the performance with a 

collection rhyme or song about kissing the 

girls before a final circle-dance drew together 

the whole cast. 

In some versions a character called Devil 

Doubt would threaten the audience with his 

broom if they didn’t give money and it is true 

that one key purpose of the local plays was 

to make a collection, money being scarce and 

every copper helping some families in times 

of need! 

In Rochdale the play was performed by young 

lads in the streets of many parts of town. 

There were ‘Street teams’ from Milnrow, 

Whitworth Road and Lower Place which 

played locally but also in the 1940’s a Pace 

Egg took place on the town’s Cattle Market 

where the Police Station now stands. Local 

schools, scout groups, Sunday Schools may 

all have had their own Pace Egg, some 

choosing to perform in more wealthy areas of 

the town so that they could get a better 

‘pay day.’

Costumes consisted of home-made regalia 

with breastplates and helmets. Sometimes 

the boys wore cloth smocks decorated with 

sashes or covered in ribbons, bits of cloth 

or strips of paper. The knights would carry 

swords made either of wood or actual iron 

which were sold for 1d and 2d each depending 

on the size (along with the scripts) from the 

printers Edwards and Brynings. In some parts 

of the country the performers’ faces would be 

blackened and this was certainly the case with 

the early Rochdale plays. 

Not everyone enjoyed a Pace Egg play. One 

report from 1914 recounted by Hutton in 

his book ‘Stations of the Sun’ said that the 

performances in some towns had ‘dinned the 

long-suffering householders into a state of 

mental distress’ and that they had to stop! 

Over the years and particularly since the 

1950’s, interest and enthusiasm for the Pace 

Egg has waned, only one last special printing 

of the play’s script or chapbook being made 

in the 1960’s. And such a ritual’s decline is 

not without precedence as similar childhood 

games - marbles, peggy, whip and top - and 

rituals such as Mischief Night and April 

Fool’s Day fail these days to gather the 

enthusiasm they once had. This is not 

surprising. Television, computer games, the 

rise of the individual citizen in preference to 

community activities, all such elements of 

‘progress’ have contributed to such a demise. 

All the more credit, therefore, to those locally 

who still perform the play. Rochdale’s 

Curtain Theatre have recently put on 

performances, Middleton has a Pace Egg 

group and there are traditional Pace Egg 

plays in the Calder Valley’s Todmorden, 

Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall on Good 

Friday every year. Long may they continue!

Museum. His talk will cover the building of the 

Titanic, and a detailed look at the sinking and 

its aftermath. 

When the Titanic was launched it was said to 

be ‘almost unsinkable but in the early hours 

of April 15th 1912, whilst on her maiden 

voyage, the passenger liner Titanic collided 

with a gigantic iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. 

The sinking of the Titanic produced worldwide 

shock and outrage.

Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group 

A SHORT WALK TO WELCOME IN SPRING 

There is no better incentive than 

to get out into the countryside 

now that Spring has arrived. 

An easy circular walk around Lower Ogden 

and Hough Fold is recommended. To get to 

the starting point, hop on the No 451 

or 462 bus that travels through Milnrow and 

Newhey Villages and terminates at 

Peppermint Bridge. The walk can be muddy 

and therefore slippy in places; there is also 

a moderate inclined stretch, and a stile to 

negotiate, so wear good walking boots or 

shoes, and clothing suitable for the weather 

conditions. A walking pole and mobile phone 

are worth taking. 

The Route 

From the bus terminus cross over and 

proceed up A640 Huddersfield Road with 

the Piethorne Brook on your left. Go beyond 

the entrance to Woodside then take the next 

footpath, left, (signposted) over the bridge 

spanning the brook. Follow the stone sett 

footpath through the wooded glade and 

along by the brook with the Piethorne Valley 

Camping Site over to the right. Look out for 

Dippers and Grey Heron along the brook and 

two waterfalls, before the path emerges onto 

Rough Bank Lane opposite P W Greenhalgh 

Works. Proceed left up to the stone sett 

lane. (signposted Bridleway). This is a steep 

inclined section so take your time and be 

aware of possible vehicular traffic. As the 

lane bears left, take the junction right, along 

the stone sett path that leads to Ogden 

Reservoir. Proceed over a stile, then right 

through a gap in the wall and down a narrow 

steep path that leads onto the reservoir 

banking. Here is a good view of the reservoir 

with the tree plantation and hills beyond. 

A suitable photo location. 

Proceed along the reservoir bank, down the 

steps at the end; turn right along Ogden 

Lane, past Foulwater Lodge, and the Burial 

Ground. To the left is Lane Bottom and the 

Bulls Head Pub and Restaurant, which is an 

ideal place for refreshments.

Our walk continues right down Ogden Lane, 

past P W Greenhalgh Works, to the junction 

with the A640 Huddersfield Road. Look out 

for a Stone Circle over the wall to your right. 

At this junction take great care crossing 

Huddersfield Road because of the blind 

bend in the road, and go down Bethany Lane, 

an ancient highway. Proceed along this 

bridleway with a view to the right of Newhey 

Quarry and St Thomas Church. Pass the 

cottages at Barnard, and at Bethany Farm 

follow the lane right emerging at Haugh 

Hamlet. At Haugh Fold we come to the 

Cedar Tree Restaurant, another suitable 

refreshment stop. Here our route takes us, 

right, up North Parade. On the left before the 

last bungalow, take the single width footpath, 

designated Mill Footpath No 364. Go along 

this footpath through the wooded area, with 

the Quarry in the distance and Piethorne 

Brook to the left, emerging back at our 

destination Peppermint Bridge Terminus. 

This walk is about 2 miles and should be 

comfortably completed in 2 hours, 

allowing for photo stops, refreshments, 

stops to admire the views, and in good time 

to catch the return bus. Note Bus Timetables 

are available at Milnrow Library.

often for a walk in the local 

countryside, then come along to our 

weekly Walk and Talk Group. Our 

walks are designed for people of all 

abilities and ages, who wish to gain 

the health benefits, both physical and 

mental, from walking in a safe and 

social group. Based at Milnrow Library 

we meet every Monday (except Bank 

Holidays) from 9.30am leaving out at 

10am. It is free and friendly and led by 

Volunteer Walk Leaders.

Springhill Hospice 30th Anniversary 

with Robert Clegg 

This year marks 30 years since 

Springhill Hospice opened its doors. 

In those 30 years the Hospice has 

developed a standard in Hospice 

care like no other and is quite 

unique in its approach. 

The journey began in the early 1980s when 

its founder, Margaret Geoghegan, saw there 

was a need in the Borough for a Hospice. 

What she did next would create a legacy that 

the people of Rochdale and beyond holds 

close to their hearts 30 years on. She was at 

the forefront of the whole appeal to create a 

facility for end of life care in Rochdale. 

The Hospice opened on the 8th October 

1989. Since then Springhill has grown and 

developed with its own education suite, Day 

Hospice and Community Nursing Service. 

It also has a line of local retail shops, its own 

lottery and its very own café, “Coffee at 

the Craven”, all helping to support its 

important work.

to him about his time 

working with the 

Hospice. 

How did you become involved 

in Springhill? 

Rochdale. My boss at the time was 

Secretary of the Appeal Committee who 

Margaret Geoghegan had gathered together 

to raise the funds to build and equip this 

new facility. When he left in 1986 I took 

his place. 

“I wrote hundreds of letters to large charities 

seeking external funding and remember 

being really excited when a cheque for 

£25,000 arrived. Locally the Rochdale 

Observer took up the cause and 

encouraged people to fundraise and every 

week published a list of donations that had 

been received. 

“Slowly but surely the £1.5 million needed 

to pay for the building, furnish and equip 

it, and the first three months running costs 

had been raised and the doors opened in 

October 1989.” 

Over the past 30 years and before the 

Hospice was even built there has always been 

support from the public and local businesses. 

Thankfully this support shows no sign of 

slowing down with continued backing from 

the people of Rochdale and beyond in their 

fundraising endeavours. 

What are your memories of the 

fundraising and events over the 

years? 

“In the early 1980s I was the Hospital “We have been very lucky to employ some

early of the plans to build a Hospice for have brought their own style to the job.

We have hosted events such as, musical 

events at Champnes Hall, Last Night of the 

Proms at Honresfeld, our Man and Woman 

of the Year events, Golf Days. There have 

been so many. 

“One event I particularly remember was 

watching people walking on hot coals on the 

car park at Rochdale Football Ground – I 

took my hat off to them – but did not take my 

shoes off! On a very personal note, winning 

the “Wit of Year” dinner in 1997 was very 

enjoyable- not winning the “Wit of Wits” in 

2001 was less so.” 

Being involved with the Hospice since before 

it opened its doors, Robert has been a part 

of some of the most memorable moments in 

Springhill’s history. 

What memories stand out to 

you from the last 30 years at 

the Hospice? 

“There have been so many happy memories, 

some of the ones stand out to me includes 

the sod cutting in preparation for the building 

works right at the beginning of the Hospice 

journey, along with the arrival of our first 

patients. The official opening by the Princess 

Royal was a very special event, as were the 

visits by the Duchess of Norfolk and later the 

Duchess of Gloucester who joined us for 

our 25th anniversary.” 

It has been an eventful 30 years for the 

Hospice. Its staff, volunteers and Robert 

have been at the forefront of the changes, 

developments and achievements that have 

had such a positive impact on people from 

across the Borough. 

What are you most proud of 

from your time at the Hospice? 

“I am proud of the fact that as a result of the 

work of Margaret Geoghegan we have been 

able for 30 years to provide a really good 

service for the people of Rochdale. I am truly 

proud to have been a member of a very large 

team of staff and volunteers that has made 

Springhill Hospice what it is today and to 

know what a massive difference we have 

made for literally thousands of our patients 

and their families in the last 30 years.”

SAVE THE DATE! 

MILNROW & NEWHEY CARNIVAL & SUMMER FETE 

SATURDAY 22ND JUNE 

Excitement is mounting throughout the 

borough in anticipation of the Milnrow 

& Newhey Carnival and Summer Fete set 

for Saturday 22nd June 2019. The event 

is enjoyed by many people each year, 

who line the streets to watch the parade 

and attend the summer fete afterwards 

at Milnrow Memorial Park. 

The carnival committee aim to maintain tradition, 

contributing their time voluntarily to organise a 

village carnival, which is now in its 50th year. 

The event brings together the local community 

with a procession from Newhey to Milnrow and 

is followed by a fete with stalls and activities. We 

encourage Rochdale’s residents to participate, 

by promoting the event in the months preceding 

each year’s summer carnival. 

Local groups can make their presence known 

and relationships are forged. Children and adults 

alike dress in fancy-dress and a fun day is had by 

all. The event is promoted throughout the local 

press and online and projects a positive image of 

Rochdale from within. 

This year the committee are delighted to 

announce that Springhill Hospice and Rochdale 

Heartbeat will be their chosen charities for 2019. 

The parade starts at 1pm at Haugh Lane, 

Newhey. The parade proceeds down Huddersfield 

Road, turns right towards Milnrow, up Newhey 

Road, continues through Milnrow, turns left onto 

Station Road, past Holroyds and then turns right 

onto Dale Street. It continues up through 

Milnrow and terminates at Milnrow Memorial Park 

for a Summer Fete. 

Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade with 

local schools are once again supporting the event 

along with pre-schools and many local groups 

with a number of exciting new entries. The theme 

this year will be ‘At the Movies’. 

At Milnrow Memorial Park, iconic pop party band 

New Identity is lined up to play, which is a five 

piece local iconic pop party band covering hits 

from Duran Duran, Spandu Ballet, Barry White, 

Robbie Williams, Bruno Mars plus more. Not to 

be missed! 

Entry is free to the park where there will be live 

music, a funfair for all ages, paintball, face 

painting, a variety of stalls and hot and cold food.

1. Rub the fat into sieved flour to make breadcrumbs. 

Add the sugar, dried fruit and then the egg. Mix to 

combine, then form a ball of dough, using a splash 

of milk if needed. 

2. Roll out the pastry (5mm/¼in thick) and cut into 

rounds with a 7.5-10cm/3-4in fluted cutter. 

3. Prepare a bakestone or a heavy iron griddle. Rub it 

with butter and wipe the excess away. Place on direct 

heat and when heated up, place the Welsh cakes on 

the griddle, turning once. They need about 2-3 minutes 

each side. Each side needs to be caramel brown 

before turning. 

4. Remove from the pan and dust with caster sugar 

while still warm. 

INGREDIENTS 

50g butter 

3 carrots – peeled and grated 

2 shallots – chopped fine 

1 clove garlic 

Small knob fresh root ginger - chopped 

100g mashed potato 

2 eggs 

50g Creamy Lancashire cheese 

200ml tomato passata 

4 leaves fresh basil – shredded 

25ml crème fraiche 

To Serve 

A selection of summer vegetables, 

blanched:- Fresh peas, Broad beans 

Carrot and Creamy 

Lancashire Timbale 

Makes 4 Ramekins 

METHOD 

1. Heat the butter and sweat off the carrots, garlic, shallot and 

ginger for 5 minutes until softened. 

2. Add the potato, eggs and cheese – mix well and season. 

3. Line ramekin dishes with food wrap and fill the ramekins with 

the mixture then cover. 

4. Bake in a bain marie 180ºc for 20 minutes. 

5. Heat the passata, basil and crème fraiche. 

6. Warm through the vegetables. 

7. When ready to serve – un-mould the 

timbales onto plates, spoon around the 

sauce and top with the market vegetables 

– It’s a summer sensation.

lottery boost 

St James War Memorial 

restoration underway for 

centenary celebration. 

Parishioners at St James Church are 

celebrating a £10,000 grant award from 

the National Lottery Heritage Fund. 

Accessing funds from the First World 

War: Then and Now programme, the 

money will go towards the restoration 

of the memorial which was built 100 

years ago. Cllr Andy Kelly said “This is a 

fantastic boost to the heritage of our 

area. The monument in the church yard 

is the village memorial to those lost in the 

Great War. In recent years, the memorial 

and its surrounding area and paths have 

fallen into disrepair. The project will not 

only restore an important local asset 

but opens the heritage up to a wider 

audience.” 

The restoration will also repair pathways 

and chain fencing, deliver education 

sessions with the primary school, 

create a guide book and interpretation, 

and hold open days to involve more 

people in the heritage. A reopening and 

celebration day is also planned.
