FA S H I O N Bohemian rhapsody FORGET GREY DAYS AND CHANNEL A SULTRY SUN-KISSED VIBE WITH SS19’S TAKE ON BOHEMIAN STYLE, SAYS AMY NORBURY WITH the unpredictable British weather doing its, well, predictably unpredictable thing - T-shirt weather one week, snow the next, anyone? - we think it’s never too early to look ahead to sunshine holidays and escapes to more exotic climes. Thankfully, one of the biggest fashion tropes to emerge from the 2019 spring summer catwalks is perfect for doing just that. Championed in the main by Chloé head honcho Natacha Ramsay-Levi, ‘Hippy Modernism’ took bohemian style to luxe levels, inspired by gap-year travels, far-flung markets and island raves - although the overriding feel was more five-star resort than backpackers’ beach shack. Now, if you cast your mind back to the mid-Noughties, boho was the overriding fashion trend which encapsulated the era, embodied by actress Sienna Miller in her low-slung peasant skirts and coin belts. Rather than a rehash of Ms Miller’s favoured style, boho in 2019 owes more to the original purveyors of bohemian chic; the floaty, effortless insouciance of Talitha Getty or Stevie Nicks. Featuring tassel earrings, floral silk dresses and semiprecious stones sparkling from the tailoring, Chloé created a high-end bohemian paradise. Seen elsewhere on the catwalk at Ports, Marni, Loewe, Chanel, Philip Lim and more, the free-spirited trend is a globe-trotter’s dream; long, languid and sensual, saturated in warm desert and sunset hues, or clashing carpet and tile prints. Key pieces to look out for include floaty tiered dresses and skirts - full length, natch - as well as super bright prints ranging from full-on tropical to pretty paisley, and tassels on everything. If you're jetting away imminently, then go full steam ahead right now. However, for those of us who won't be seeing sun for months, start introducing the trend through print dresses and craft accessories like macramé or bamboo bags. Bear in mind, though, that crafty does not necessarily mean DIY. A polished wooden clutch or a perfectly-formed leather sandal brings a slick, chic edge to bohemia.
