WHAT TO DO
The Big Feastival is now in its
eighth year and is hosted by
former Blur bassist Alex James
on his farm near Kingham.
Its emphasis is on food and
family, with celebrity chefs,
demonstrations, fairground
rides and top musical talent.
It takes place 23-35 August
and this year’s line-up includes
Jess Glynn, Elbow, Prue Leith
and Raymond Blanc.
If you only take one walk in
the Cotswolds, head to an area
known as The Slaughters and
make the easy, mile-long stroll
between the twin villages of
Upper and Lower Slaughter.
If you’re quick on your feet
and love cheese, don’t miss
the world-famous Cooper's Hill
Cheese-Rolling and Wake, an
annual event held on the Spring
Bank Holiday near Gloucester.
People from around the world
attend the unique spectacle,
which sees participants chase a
9lbs round of Double Gloucester
down a steep hill. Be warned,
it’s surprisingly dangerous.
Corsham Court is one
of England’s finest stately
homes. Browse its fabulous
collection of furniture and
art and spectacular parkland
designed by Capability Brown.
WHERE TO EAT
If you want to sample local
produce, pick up some goodies
to take home, or put together a
picnic to remember, the awardwinning
Stroud Farmers’ Market,
held every Saturday morning,
is the ideal place to explore.
For a real treat, head to
Le Champignon Sauvage,
Cheltenham, a two-Michelin star
establishment and one of the
best restaurants in Britain. A little
more low-key is The Five Alls in
Filkins. The Cotswolds has no
shortage of excellent gastropubs
and this atmospheric village
pub is a favourite of supermodel
Kate Moss, word has it.
When in a quintessentially
English village, it’s only right to
do the quintessentially English
thing and treat yourself to an
afternoon tea. Try Tisanes Tea
Rooms, Broadway, an oldfashioned
tea shop which offers
more than 30 types of tea.
HOW TO GET THERE
Fly with Aurigny direct to Bristol where you’ll find regular rail and
bus connections to major Cotswolds towns, including Stroud and
Cheltenham Spa. Bristol Temple Meads to Cheltenham Spa takes just
40 minutes by train.
