who don’t know – the Muddy Princess is 

an outdoor 5-km obstacle mud run for 

women, and women ONLY. It’s for women 

of all sizes, ages and fitness levels. No one is 

focusing on fastest times or competitions, 

the focus is on fun, so be prepared to 

run, walk, crawl, climb, slide, balance and 

laugh your way along the course. It takes 

place at Makarios Country Lodge at 8am.

R adiant ozanne 

As role model stepping out, slashing stereotypes and breaking boundaries, Rozanne Olivier is 

doing life on her terms.

Every woman will experience a life 

changing moment once in a lifetime, 

which, no matter how big or small, 

will open her eyes, hitting her like a 

ton of bricks to send the message: it’s 

time for a change. A brave woman is 

a confident woman from the inside 

out. Courage is the key to happiness, 

something Rozanne Olivier has in 

abundance. Sugar and spice, and all 

things nice would be the words to 

describe this strong and outgoing 

woman. 

Get It wanted to know what her life 

journey has really meant to her. “It 

means hard work and dedication 

to achieve a future with great 

opportunities and eternal happiness.” 

Rozanne is a creative soul full of heart 

and drive but her journey from where 

she was to where she is now has been 

long and hard. “As an overweight 

teen in high school and through my 

university days, bullying was a part of 

everyday life, an act of disgust I knew all 

too well. Weighing over 100 kilograms 

then, life was a constant struggle and 

depression closely followed,” she says. 

She picked up bad habits of binge 

eating and hiding food away. As a 

result, shopping for clothing became 

a huge struggle. “I could not find any 

flattering outfits for my body type.” 

The day came where she was invited 

to a friend’s 21st birthday and had to 

find a dress. After hours of searching, 

something changed in her mind and 

Rozanne made a pact with herself that 

she was going to change her lifestyle 

for the better. “This was the turning 

point in my life. At that moment I 

decided to start living healthier and to 

become confident in my own skin.” She 

decided not be the skinniest version 

of herself but the healthiest version. 

She recalls how she realised that every 

woman wants to feel sexy, so for her it 

was now or never. 

It took four years of training and 

healthy eating and when thinking 

back, Rozanne remembers how 

many setbacks she had to overcome 

during those four years. She says, 

“Motivation does not come easily 

for me.” When asked what the things 

are that really worked for her, she 

emphasises the value of meal planning, 

having a personal trainer and creating 

aspirational mood boards which help 

to keep you motivated. Surrounding 

herself with positivity was crucial for 

Rozanne and having a very supportive 

family behind her helped greatly in 

her journey. “At the end of the day it is 

about loving yourself,” she adds. 

Rozanne went through blood sweat 

and tears to achieve her goals, which 

were greatly rewarded when she was 

scouted by a model agency called 

STEAL in Johannesburg. The sky was 

the limit for Rozanne as she went for 

countless photoshoots and landed 

her big break for one of South Africa’s 

biggest clothing brands, Donna. She 

made such a splash that the model 

agency ICE in Cape Town took her 

on as one of their own. Since then 

Rozanne has been working hard and 

travelling the world and all around 

South Africa, walking in fashion shows 

and doing countless photoshoots. 

Rozanne is the poster child for body 

positivity and embraces the curves 

she now has. She sees modelling as 

empowering but to have the world 

seeing her on such a big scale can be 

overwhelming, even scary, at times. 

Rozanne is not only a true model in 

her own right, she is currently the 

owner of Head 2 Toe Hair and Make-up 

School in Bloemfontein. She pursued 

her creative dreams by attending 

Head 2 Toe Hair and Make-up School 

in Cape Town after completing a 

degree in Psychology at the University 

of the Free State. Make-up has always 

been Rozanne’s passion where she 

can live out her spontaneous side. 

She is not planning on slowing down 

anytime soon and has big plans for her 

hometown, Bloemfontein. 

Get It wanted to know what Rozanne is 

planning for the future. “I have a dream 

of one day opening my very own 

plus-size modelling school where I can 

empower other curvy girls and women 

to realise their dreams. I want them to 

live their life to the best of their ability 

by being confident and following a 

healthy lifestyle that would fit their 

personal needs, creating a safe space 

away from the judgment and bullying 

out there in the world.” 


Rozanne’s tried and tested 

meal prep tips 

• Schedule the days you will be 

packing your meals. I prefer 

Sundays and Wednesdays. 

• Have colour coded containers, e.g. a 

purple lid for breakfast, green lid for 

lunch and a pink lid for dinner. 

• Measure out your proteins, e.g. 

100g protein but add as much 

veggies or salad as you want. 

Veggies last better with a meal 

prep. 

• Keep it fun, mix your proteins and 

make your veggies colourful so it 

looks more appealing. 

• Search some salad in jar recipes, 

they last long and are super 

yummy. 

• Failing to plan is planning to fail; 

decide on weekly menus and make 

shopping lists accordingly. 

• Enjoy it! 

Rozanne’s top cheat meals 

Rozanne loves making some 

edamame beans with salt or roasted 

chick peas as a snack, especially 

when she watches movies. She loves 

tacos, so she often replaces them 

with romaine lettuce. For spaghetti 

and meat balls she replaces the 

spaghetti with cauliflower or 

zucchini spaghetti. And for the 

sweet tooth, she makes a banana 

protein pancake with honey. One 

can even replace the protein 

and opt for almond or oat flour 

instead.

Neil Nachtrein is ‘n boerseun met ‘n buitengewone liefde vir woorde en musiek. 

Wanneer hy sing, word mense aangeraak en vóél dit wat uit sy binneste kom.

Die plattelandse stilte, vlaktes en 

natuur was nog altyd ‘n groot bron 

van inspirasie vir Neil se musiek. 

Hy het in 2005 begin musiek skryf 

tydens sy verblyf op ‘n plaas in die 

mooie Fouriesburg. By sy woonstel 

op hierdie plaas het gereeld ‘n trein 

verbygery en die tipe nostalgie 

wat dit gewek het, het gelei tot sy 

verhoognaam, Nachtrein. Sedertdien 

het sy talente gegroei en het hy nog 

nie teruggekyk nie. Twee albums later 

inspireer Neil steeds met sy lirieke en 

sielvolle musiek, en groei sy repertoire 

geweldig. 

Neil het grootgeword op Odendaalsrus 

by sy ouers, albei onderwysers, en 

twee susters. Na skool is hy Engeland 

toe om daar te werk vir ‘n paar 

maande, en dit is ook daar wat 

hy begin tuis voel het op die 

verhoog. “Ek het gereeld by open 

mic aande opgetree, en dit is daar 

waar ek my vrees vir sing voor 

mense oorkom het. Ek is baie 

gemaklik op die verhoog en geniet 

elke oomblik daarvan,” vertel Neil. 

Terug op eie bodem het Neil Geologie 

by Kovsies begin studeer. Kort voor 

lank het hy egter voor ‘n kruispad te 

staan gekom waar hy moes kies tussen 

sy studies (en loopbaan wat sou volg), 

en musiek. “Die keuse was maklik. 

My liefde vir musiek was nog altyd 

groter as alles.” Hy het baie optredes 

op Fouriesburg en Bethlehem 

gedoen, waar sy musiekstyl as’t ware 

volwasse geword het. Hy kan verskeie 

instrumente speel, insluitend kitaar, 

mandolien en bekfluitjie. 

In die tyd toe hy in Fouriesburg gebly 

en gereeld opgetree het, het Neil sy 

aandag toegespits op liedjieskryf. Hy 

het ook vir tien jaar lank as blokman 

in sy ouers se slaghuis gewerk. “Ek 

is dankbaar dat ek darem nog al my 

vingers het, sodat ek musiek kan maak,” 

skerts Neil. 

Sy eerste album, Gisters en Blisters, het 

in 2011 die lig gesien. Hiermee het hy 

die land alleen plat getoer, totdat hy 

aan die einde van 2014 die gewilde 

Afrikaanse sanger, Jan Blohm, ontmoet 

het. Neil het ‘n Jan Blohm-optrede 

geopen, en dié twee het kort daarna 

spontaan saam begin musiekmaak. 

Hulle het formeel as Blomtrein begin 

optree en toer, en dit is ook by Jan wat 

Neil baie waardevolle lesse geleer het

van 2017 kom die Blomtrein-sege tot 

‘n einde, en gaan Neil weer volstoom 

voort met sy sololoopbaan. 

In 2016 het Neil met sy sielsgenoot, 

Netske, getrou. Sy werk as ‘n 

arbeidsterapeut in Bloemfontein. Hulle 

geniet dit om soveel as moontlik saam 

te toer met sy musiek. “Sy is vir seker 

my grootste ondersteuner. Ons maak ‘n 

baie goeie span,” gesels Neil. 

Get It vra uit oor Neil se unieke 

musiekstyl, en waar sy inspirasie 

vandaan kom. “Dis moeilik om te 

beskryf. My musiek spruit uit gevoelens 

van nostalgie en heimwee. Dis asof 

die musiek reeds daar is. Ek is slegs 

‘n voertuig waardeur die musiek sy 

bestemming bereik. My musiek bevat 

stories. Ander mense s’n, maar ook 

my eie. Uit stille observasie kom my 

woorde en note.” 

Afrikaans is die taal waarin sy hart praat, 

en waarin sy musiek uiting kry. “Ek sal 

nooit wegbeweeg van my moedertaal 

af nie. Hoe druk ‘n mens jouself en dit 

wat binne-in jou hart aangaan, uit in 

‘n ander taal?” Uit die aard van Neil 

se geaardheid en musiekstyl, hou hy 

veral van klein, intieme optredes, soos 

huiskonserte. “Ek fokus nogal sterk 

daarop. Vir Desember gaan ek die Kaap 

vol toer met hoofsaaklik huiskonserte.” 

Om op die pad te wees, hou vir Neil 

‘n sekere betowering in. “Dis asof my 

musiek groei op die pad. Jy word 

dinge wys deur verskeie plekke 

te besoek en vir uiteenlopende 

gehore te sing.” 

Wanneer Neil homself nie met 

musiek besig hou nie, geniet 

hy en Netske gehaltetyd en die 

buitelewe. Hy maak ook lieflike 

leerprodukte vir sy pa se leerbesigheid, 

JAC Handgemaakte Leerwerk. (Gaan 

loer gerus na hul pragtige Facebookblad). 

Wat die toekoms betref, wil Neil 

aanhou musiekmaak, oorspronklike 

liedjies skryf en nuwe klanke aan sy 

lojale én nuwe ondersteuners bied. 

Neil se splinternuwe album, Op 

plekke waar ons eens was, word 

op 21 November by die Naval Hill 

Planetarium bekendgestel. Dié CD is 

by Crooked House deur Pieter Greyling 

en Jean Fourie vervaardig. Die album 

is op alle digitale platforms beskikbaar, 

en kan direk by Neil aangekoop word.

‘n Sak vol seëninge 

Om met leer, naald en 

gare te werk, is terapie vir 

onderwysstudent Nadia 

Gouws. Haar besigheid, 

Beatus Genuine Leather, is 

werklik geseënd. 

Leerhandsakke het ’n geskiedenis om van generasie tot generasie deel te wees 

van ‘n vrou se uitrusting. Jou ouma het een gehad, jou ma het een, en nou sal 

jy ook jou eie handgemaakte Beatus-leerhandsak kan aanskaf. Nadia was nog 

baie jonk toe sy vir die eerste keer kennis gemaak het met ‘n leerhandsak. Haar 

ouer broer, wat nou in die Kaap woon, het eendag vir haar ‘n klein handsakkie 

gekoop. Toe sy ouer word, wou sy graag in ‘n groter handsak belê, maar wat vir 

haar mooi was, was onbekostigbaar, en wat bekostigbaar was, was nie vir haar 

mooi nie. Nadia besluit toe om haar ma se hulp in te roep om ‘n handsak te 

maak. Die twee gaan koop toe ‘n vel leer en ontwerp ‘n handsak vir elkeen van 

hulle. Die foto van die handsakke, wat haar ma toe op Facebook geplaas het, 

het dadelik kommentaar ontlok van mense wat navraag gedoen het oor dié 

unieke handsakke. En so het die besgheid, Beatus, ontstaan. 

Nadia vertel dat die naam, Beatus, in Italiaans geseënd beteken. Sy glo vas 

dat God die besigheid van die begin af geseën het en wil baie graag hê dat 

elke person wat ‘n Beatus-produk koop, ook werklik geseënd sal wees. As 

onderwysstudent wat sielkunde en gebaretaal as ekstra vakke neem, het Nadia 

‘n groot passie om met gestremde mense te werk. Die Engelse beskrywing, 

“they are not disabled, they are differently abled”, is vir haar waaroor dit gaan. 

Nadia se liefde vir gestremdes het ontwikkel in die tyd wat sy met haar oupa 

op die plaas deurgebring het. Hy was weens ‘n beroerte nie in staat om te 

praat nie. Volgens Nadia was die “gesprekke” en tyd saam met haar oupa die 

beste wat sy ooit met hom gehad het. Sy is van mening dat Beatus so geseënd 

is omdat sy gebruik maak van gestremde mense om die leersakke aanmekaar 

te sit. Sy glo daar is heeltemal te min werksgeleenthede vir gestremdes, 

daarom bied sy dié wonderlike geleentheid vir hulle aan. Beatus het twee 

gestremde mense permanent in diens. 

Elke handsak wat ontwerp word, kry sy eie unieke identiteitsnommer om 

dit ekstra spesiaal te maak. Daar is ‘n groot verskeidenheid Beatus-ontwerpe 

waaruit gekies kan word, maar jy het ook die geleentheid om jou eie Beatushandsak 

te ontwerp aangesien jy die styl, kleur en binnelyn kan kies om by jou 

smaak te pas. 

Nadia se ideaal is om nog werksgeleenthede deur Beatus te skep, spesifiek vir 

gestremdes. Sy wil aan die samelewing wys dat gestremdes nie minderwaardig 

is nie, maar beskik oor baie potensiaal en talent wat wag om ontsluit te word. 

Sy sou ook graag haar handsakke werêldwyd wou uitvoer en gereeld nuwe 

produkte beskikbaar stel. Vir dié energieke jong dame wink ‘n suksesvolle 

toekoms. Haar wens is om in die volgende paar jaar ‘n sukses van Beatus maak 

en die besigheid tot sy volle potensiaal te groei. Vir haar is die wete dat Beatus 

nie moontlik kon wees sonder God se seën nie, die grootste aansporing.

Let’s take you back to the ‘80s when the “scrunchie” was known 

as the “bunch bangle”. At that time the scrunchie revolutionised 

hair accessories and now, almost 20 years later, it has made 

a great comeback with millennial generations loving it. Even 

though the scrunchie used to be known as an immature hair 

statement piece, it has made its mark and is here to stay. 

This quirky hair trend is perfect for this summer and oh-so 

versatile that it can even be worn while taking a trip to the 

gym. It is an accessory that can be romantic and yet playful 

at the same time, suitable for any occasion. After searching 

for the perfect scrunchie and being unsuccessful in finding 

the right one for themselves, Mia and Zoey Vermaak took 

matters into their own hands and decided to create their 

own custom scrunchies. 

Not long after creating and making their own scruchies by 

hand, their Instagram shop, Scrunch A Lot, was born. With

patterns and polka dots – the options are endless. Mixing

Dark Chocolate 

Avo Mousse 

You will need 

240g avo flesh 

¼ cup melted dark choc 

(I used Lindt 70%) 

¼ cup cocoa powder 

¼ cup liquid sweetener 

(I used maple syrup) 

¼ teaspoon salt 

3 tablespoons milk of choice 

(I used full fat cow’s milk) 

1 teaspoon vanilla essence 

(or ½ teaspoon vanilla extract) 

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend 

till mixed well. It should be light and fluffy. 

Transfer to a glass and refrigerate. Serve with 

fresh berries.

2 teaspoons of lime juice 

Mix ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 /8 tsp onion powder 

with 3 tablespoons of avocado oil. Add 

150g avocado flesh (1 med-large avo) and 

2 teaspoons of lime juice. Blend until the oil 

and avo are well combined. Serve on toast 

or even as a dip. Keep the avo butter in the 

fridge for three days. Store with cling wrap 

touching it so it doesn’t lose its colour.

“Hierdie huis is uniek en enig in sy 

soort, want dit is spesifiek vir óns 

ontwerp. Dié huis praat ons taal, en 

ons lééf hier.” So gesels Petria Smit. Sy 

en haar man, Jan Smit, is albei argitekte 

by hul eie firma, Smit Argitekte, en is 

ook dosente in argitektuur aan die 

Universiteit van die Vrystaat. 

Bykans twee dekades gelede het die 

In die middel van die Rosestad skuil 

‘n woning wat geen skeiding tussen 

natuur en muur het nie. Welkom by 

argitekpaar, Jan en Petria Smit, se 

klein paradys. 

Smit-egpaar ‘n stukkie grond gekoop 

teenaan Grants Hill (naby Naval Hill) en 

hul huis daar begin bou. Wat hierdie 

huis so besonders maak, is dat dit as 

‘n uitvloeisel van die natuur gesien 

kan word. Geen boom, blom, tak, blaar 

of klip is versteur om dié moderne 

gesinshuis daar te bou nie. Elke balkon, 

vloer, muur en dak is rondom die 

natuur gebou, en vandag lê dié tuiste 

meer geborge tussen die bosse as 

ooit tevore. Dis asof die aarde dit oor 

die jare heen liefgekry en omhels het 

en as’t ware deel gemaak het van sy 

magiese bestaan. 

Die kleure, teksture en materiaal 

wat destyds gebruik is met die bou 

van die huis, is met sorg gekies

word. Daar is geen deel in die huis 

wat heeltemal afgesonder is nie – alles 

vloei inmekaar en die huis spreek 

boekdele van ‘n hegte gesin wat liefhet 

en mekaar geniet. Die egpaar se twee 

studentekinders is onlangs uit die huis. 

Jan en Petria onthou hoe hul kinders 

veral kleintyd dié unieke huis met al sy 

interessanthede geniet het. “Die rotse, 

bome en veld rondom ons het gesorg 

vir ure se avontuur vir die kinders en 

hul maats. Selfs toe hulle tieners was, 

was die vloei van die huis gepas… 

behalwe dat ons toe baie meer bewus 

was van ‘n geraas wat tieners soms 

maak!” skerts Petria.

historiese kuns. Jan 

besit meubels wat 

ontwerp is in 1917 

deur die Hollandse 

argitek, Rietveld. 

Hy het leerstoele 

wat afkomstig is uit

in Wasili, 

asook ‘n lêstoel deur 

Le Corbusier uit 1929. 

Verskeie van die Smit-egpaar se 

huisontwerpe – insluitend hul eie 

huis – het oor die jare heen in gesogte 

glanstydskrifte verskyn en ook die 

gewilde televisieprogram, Top Billing,

Take a breath of fresh air and let the natural elements work their

The botanical name of 

these plants is Tillandsia. 

The common name “Air 

Plants” was given to them 

because their main source 

of nutrients comes from 

the air that surrounds 

them. Good air flow is 

key to their happiness. Air 

plants make for the perfect 

companions. Once you 

receive your first little air 

plant, soak it in water for 

about 15 minutes and set 

out to dry upside down 

before placing it in its new 

home. Air plants do not 

need soil to grow, their 

roots act like feelers and 

attach themselves to 

their surroundings 

and not soil. Your 

air plant should be 

placed in sunlight 

or artificial light 

and lightly sprinkled 

with water, depending 

on the season. In the dry and hot 

season they should be soaked and 

sprayed vigorously at least once a 

week but during the wet and damp 

season this ritual can be lessened. It 

is important to always remember to 

allow them to dry completely after 

their soak before placing them back 

into the home. This avoids that they 

start growing mould. 

To make sure you have well hydrated 

air plants, take a close look at their 

leaves. If the leaves are tightly 

curved it will be an indication of 

more water being needed. If their 

tips start drying out, it is a sign that 

they might be exposed to too much 

sunlight and that they should be 

moved. Hang them, stack them or 

pin them, the options are endless. So 

get started and create your tropical 

oasis now and watch these babies

Eat Out & Stay Low-Carb

It can be difficult when one is on a diet and the urge for a night out lurks 

in the shadows but where there is a will, there is a way. 

When at a restaurant, before ordering your meal, take a look around the 

room at the size of the meals as they come out of the kitchen and then 

ask yourself if there is a meal on the menu that can be slightly adjusted 

to fit in with the low-carb diet framework. Always be prepared, those 

cravings will get you. Avoid all side dishes as they are mainly loaded with 

carbs and are an unnecessary extra component to your meal, unless the 

side dish would be a salad or a side of vegetables. A good way to go is 

to order a starter portion and add good sides to it instead of ordering a 

main meal with side options. Choose wisely by selecting savoury dishes 

that do not come with a sweet sauce on the side. All sauces that contain 

a great amount of sugar should be out of sight and out of mind. Know 

your limits and say no to deep fried food, especially fries, they are full of 

oil. 

If you get the urge to have a splurge, choose one only and limit your 

decisions to only three to choose from, such as wine, dessert or a starter. 

A great cheese platter for dessert is the way to end off your night.

EDIBLE CHOCOLATE RIM 

ESPRESSO CUPS 

Your Shopping List: 

1 cup sugar 

½ cup softened butter 

1 egg 

1 tsp. vanilla 

1 

/3 cup sour cream 

½ tsp. salt 

½ tsp. baking soda 

2 cups flour 

100 g dark chocolate, melted

chocolate, more is more! Try this 

decadent and oh-so-easy recipe to 

create your own edible espresso 

cups. The cookie cups are easy to 

bake, the melted chocolate is a great 

touch and the espresso, made with 

our new Foreign Ground Signature 

Blends, is the cherry on top! 

Method 

1. 

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees 

C. Spray a mini muffin tin with 

cooking spray 

2. 

With a hand mixer, cream together 

sugar and butter. Add egg and 

vanilla. In separate bowl, combine 

sour cream, salt and soda. Add 

flour and sour cream to butter 

mixture, beat until smooth. 

3. 

Divide the dough into 30 equal 

sized balls. Roll each ball flat and 

press the dough into a mini muffin 

tin. Place the tray in the freezer 

for 5 minutes to harden the dough 

and then cut off any edges that 

overlap on the sides. Bake cookies 

for 15-18 minutes, making sure 

they’re not getting too brown at 

the end. 

4. Let cool in the pan for 10-15 

minutes, then gently run a thin 

knife along the sides to pop them 

out. If you greased the pan well, 

you shouldn’t have any problems 

here! 

5. Fill each cookie cup with melted 

chocolate and then pour the extra 

chocolate back into the bowl 

of melted chocolate. Place on a 

tray and leave to cool. Once the 

chocolate is set fill each cup with 

an espresso and serve immediately

400 g puff pastry 

1 egg; beaten 

Salt and freshly ground pepper 

170 g asparagus; blanched 

½ cup (125 ml) sun-dried tomatoes; 

sliced 

200 g olives 

2 sprigs rosemary, leaves only; 

chopped 

Olive oil 

250 g Ile de France Brie; sliced 

For the filling: 

1. Place asparagus, sun-dried 

tomatoes, olives and rosemary into 

a mixing bowl. Add the olive oil and 

toss to coat. Season with salt and 

pepper. 

2. Place filling onto pre-baked puff 

pastry bases and top with slices of 

Brie. 

3. Return to oven for 5 min. or 

until cheese melts, then serve 

immediately. 

Method 

If you’re keen to bring a little French flair to your table, serve 

up these Brie and asparagus tarts. This is a truly simple, yet 

sublime, recipe. 

Directions 

For the puff pastry cases: 

1. Preheat oven to 200 °C. 

2. Lay puff pastry on a floured surface and cut in half. 

Transfer to a lined baking tray and lightly score a 1cm 

border into each one. 

3. Brush with the beaten egg and season with salt and black 

pepper. 

4. Bake for 15–20 min. until golden brown and crisp.

Bulgar Wheat Salad 

with Strawberry, Rocket and Feta 

Method: 

Try this spectacular bulgar salad recipe with strawberries, rocket 

and feta. The perfect side to any braai. 

Directions 

1. Heat the chicken bone broth in a saucepan and pour in the 

bulgar wheat. Simmer gently for about 15–20 minutes or until 

the bulgar wheat is cooked through. Fluff with a fork and set 

aside to cool. 

2. Once cooled, divide the bulgar wheat equally into the 4 jars 

and top with a few slices of strawberries, some wild rocket, 

cucumber, feta and avocado. 

3. Drizzle with Simple Truth Mayonnaise just before serving.

Walking through big five country and sleeping out in 

the wild 

So you’re looking for somethng a little out of the ordinary. A little 

more adventurous. Something special. And as we so often do (boast, 

boast), we’ve done the hard work for you and found something 

spectacular for you to experience. An authentic wilderness adventure, 

where you can experience the beauty of the bush on foot and sleep 

out in the wild. A fly camping safari experience is the latest activity 

offered at Samara Private Game Reserve in the Great Karoo – arguably 

one of the most extraordinary areas of South Africa. 

Taking its name from the original safari days when explorers set up 

camp in big game country with little more than a fly sheet protecting 

them from the elements, Samara’s fly camping activity remains true to 

these origins. 

WIth a maximum of six guests, your adventure begins with a guided 

bush walk through Big Five territory ... fret not ... the rangers are armed 

and they, and the trackers, are hugely experienced. Come dusk, you’ll 

arrive at your private camp, where your tents have already been set up 

(thank heavens ... imagine having to do that yourself after a long day 

walking in the bush!), and the fire ready to be lit. You’ll have (massively 

welcome, we’re sure) sundowners followed by a traditional South 

Africa braai – think boerewors, roosterbrood and grilled pineapple 

– cooked by the ranger and tracker team. You’ll spend the evening 

sitting round the campfire, sharing safari stories and listening to the 

nightly chorus of jackals, nightingales and the occasional lion roar, 

before retreating to bed. The next morning, you can continue your 

walk or drive back to the lodge. 

This fly camping safari is only available from October to May 

(excluding December 15 to January 10) and is limited to guests 

who’ve booked a minimum three-night stay in one of Samara’s lodges. 

A R7 000 a night camping surcharge applies, although this charge is 

included in the cost if guests book a five-night conservation package. 

Prices include the services of a fully armed ranger and tracker. You do 

need to be 16 or older.
