ACT II: NAUTICAL BEAN<br />

Brett Jones lacks pretense. “I sell a lot of drip coffee,” he says.<br />

“That’s my M.O. here.”<br />

The interior of the Nautical Bean—which he’s owned since<br />

2002—reflects what he calls a “blue collar” vibe. The walls are<br />

covered in skateboards, pop culture art, trophy antlers, bike parts,<br />

and portraits of Mister Rogers. In other words, it’s busy and fun.<br />

Jones sources his coffee from a roastery in San Diego (including<br />

his bestselling proprietary blend, Nutty Bean), and espresso<br />

comes from Slake Roasters in Cambria. The cafe offers espresso<br />

drinks and a popular selection of breakfast and lunch items.<br />

But while coffee is key to the Nautical Bean’s success, Jones is<br />

realistic. “I one-hundred-percent support pour-overs, singleorigin<br />

beans, et cetera, but that’s just not me. I think a big part<br />

of being an entrepreneur is staying true to yourself, not trying<br />

to be something you’re not. If you build an environment that’s<br />

authentic, people will come.” >><br />
