Fish Conservation and
Culture Laboratory
The UC Davis Fish Conservation and Culture Laboratory, an off-campus facility located about 80
miles south of Davis in Byron, is dedicated to the research and stewardship of the endangered
Delta Smelt and the threatened Longfin Smelt. Important indicators of the environmental conditions
in the San Francisco Bay-Delta, these once-abundant species are in critical condition due
to a combination of record-high water diversions, pollutants, the introduction of harmful non-native
species and drought. This project renovates and expands the current facility to add two new
pre-engineered metal buildings, a modular office building and new spawning and rearing tanks.
The work also includes drainage system replacement work and the addition of a dedicated telecommunication
network and electric power service.
