information for our community pages. 

We have a double page spread showing some 

wonderful photos taken at this year’s Carnival, once 

again thousands of people flocked the streets to 

watch the procession and enjoy the entertainment 

at Milnrow Memorial Park. A date for your diaries is 

June 20th which is when next year’s Carnival will 

take place. The theme is ‘Christmas in June!’ so you 

have plenty of time to get your thinking caps on and 

create some eye-catching outfits. 

There’s a great article on page 52 about our 

wonderful friend Jenny Neaverson, mother of two 

young boys, who was diagnosed with cancer 18 

months ago. Due to her immense bravery, positivity 

and selflessness since her diagnosis, Jenny was 

nominated by her friends to attend an Ascot 

Ladies Day at Nutters sponsored by Revilo Homes. 

She was chosen as a very worthy recipient and 

thoroughly enjoyed her special day. Jenny is a true 

inspiration to everyone who knows her. 

We wish all the residents of Milnrow and 

Newhey a very happy Summer. The October 

issue will be dropping through your letterbox 

around 3rd October.

Another Fantastic 

Year for Milnrow 

and Newhey 

Carnival 

Thousands of people lined the streets to 

watch Milnrow & Newhey Carnival and 

attended the summer fete at Milnrow 

Memorial Park on Saturday 22nd June. 

A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all 

and the sense of camaraderie and goodwill 

in the village was evident as the local 

community came out to support the day. 

Milnrow Brass Band led the parade which 

followed by a host of walking groups and vehicles 

ranging from cars, flat bed trailers to 45ft floats. 

There were Carnival Queens, super-heroes, fairy 

tale characters, street dancers, morris dancers, 

cricketers, footballers, local schools, pre-schools 

together with voluntary groups, businesses and 

charities taking part in the parade donning all 

kinds of fancy dress. This year’s ‘At the Movies’ 

theme was evident throughout the parade as was 

a very impressive sight. 

Proceeds from the street collection were donated 

to Springhill Hospice and Rochdale Heartbeat. 

The carnival committee wishes to thank the local 

community for the generosity shown in the 

contributions to the street collection on the day. 

Large crowds attended the Milnrow Memorial 

Park and enjoyed the live music provided by New 

Identity to the delight of the crowd. 


Also, at the park there was a family fun fair, paintball, 

crazy golf, toy stalls, craft stalls, face painting, 

hair accessories, karate displays, soap stalls, 

charity stalls and tombolas. Mrs Barbers Bakery 

attended the event offering a selection of delicious 

unique cakes along with Sugar Chic Fudge and 

Busy Beans Coffee providing afternoon tea and a 

wide range of speciality coffee. 

The committee would like to thank all who took 

part in the parade and attended the park. They are 

always amazed by the effort put into the costumes 

and float decoration and are immensely grateful 

the community’s participation and support of this 

well-loved annual event. 

The committee would also like to thank Graham 

Poole Transport, Minky of Rochdale, M J May 

Transport for providing vehicles and drivers for the 

event. Thanks, are also offered to Buddies Florist, 

The Beauty Spot and The Card House for their 

contribution to the Carnival Queens float. We 

would also like to thank Milnrow Bowling Club for 

re-arranging their fixture list. 

Finally, the carnival committee would like to 

extend their gratitude to all who watched the 

parade and attended the summer fete.

Your Forum Needs You! 

By Neil Butterworth, your newly appointed Forum Chair 

As the recently appointed Chairman of Pennine’s Business and Tourism Forum, I thought it 

best we start by taking stock of what we had to offer and felt that Tourism was a good 

starting point. I won’t get it all into this short article, however I hope that any business 

people or members of the public who have an interest in developing our local businesses 

to increase trade and tourism, please do get in touch (see opposite). 

Let’s start with Newhey and Ogden 

We have Piethorne Valley Camping (with glamping pods!, available at 

http://piethorne-valley-camping.co.uk/), a relatively new site with fantastic options of walks 

in the Pennines and visits to the local pubs and cafes, many outdoor activities are available 

ranging from angling to hang gliding! 

We also have several historical trails in the area focusing on the Co-Op movement and the 

old co-ops in the area, as a matter of interest, which one did you frequent? The Red one or 

the Blue one? 

Moving into Milnrow you can’t beat Milnrow 

Memorial Park, another gem in our area and centre 

for many activities from Crown Green Bowling to 

Basket Ball (the local “Friends of Milnrow Park” 

group do a great job in managing this lovely Green 

Space). It’s also a highlight of our Pennines in 

Bloom entry. Excellent parking facilities make it a 

great starting point to walk or run in the Pennines.

I understand that we get quite a few visitors from 

Japan who are interested in the story of John Milne 

(he invented the seismograph; remember Kobe in 

January 1995 and Fukushima in April 2011?

Just over the road is the Ellenroad Engine House and Steam Museum 

(Available at https://sites.google.com/a/ellenroad.org.uk/www/home) a local gem and in 

steam the first Sunday in every month, usually with a supporting car/tractor rally and an 

excellent café serving sandwiches, cakes and liquid refreshments! 

We have the Pennine Way on our doorstep which along with several local pubs and 

restaurants make it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Several walking 

groups are based in the area and welcome visitors to join them (e.g. Rochdale Ramblers, 

available at https://www.rochdaleramblers.org.uk/) 

A visit to Milnrow Library is also a fantastic way to spend a few hours and you will receive a 

warm welcome and lots of information of what is available in the Pennines (More 

information available at http://www.rochdale.gov.uk/library-services/local-libraries/Pages/ 

milnrow-library.aspx). 

We can’t do an article on Tourism without mentioning Hollingworth Lake, a reservoir for the 

Rochdale Canal which has proven a great tourist attraction for many people over the years. 

It’s management has recently been taken over by Link 4 Life who also manage the many 

leisure centres in the Borough. Sailing and water sports are the main activities, but a wildlife 

centre and a flat walking surface also prove very popular for young and old alike. I always 

have to have an ice cream, it’s the law! 

What about future development of business and tourism? 

The purpose of the Pennines Business and Tourism Forum (Available at //blanthorn.com/ 

sites/pennine-business-and-tourism-forum/contact) is to promote and support business 

and tourism development within the area, especially tourism. 

Unfortunately, meetings are poorly attended and budgets are sparse. 

We need enthusiastic people to get involved. We are instigating a free Raffle with cash prizes 

to be spent in your local shops, planned to be 

launched 100 days before and in support of 

Small Business Saturday, on the 7th December.

Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group 

A FOUR-MILE WALK FOR THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS 

Now that it is summer and the children are on holiday from school, why not 

encourage them to take a ramble into the local countryside. This is a 

moderate walk with some lengthy inclines; ascents and descents; some 

stiles and a motorway bridge. 

OSMap OL21 covers the route. Have suitable 

walking shoes or boots and clothing to protect 

you depending on the weather conditions. If it 

is hot, take plenty of water to refresh you, and 

sunscreen to protect you. A walking pole and 

mobile phone are worth taking. 

The Route 

The starting point for our Group is Milnrow 

Library from where we proceed left, under the 

motorway bridge, then left into Milnrow Memorial 

Park. The park is also an alternative starting 

point, it offers car parking facilities and toilets. 

Proceed up the high path, left, which passes 

the Grade II listed War Memorial and take the 

woodland walk path, past the wild bird feeding 

station emerging at the end of the park 

perimeter wall. Proceed along the bridleway 

that leads to Lower Bradley and St Thomas’ 

Church. Go down Church Street, then right 

down the steps, cross over the A640 

Huddersfield Road, go along Railway Street, 

over the Piethorne Brook footbridge and onto 

Two Bridges Road. Turn left up to Hough Fold, 

and proceed along the stone sett paved road 

with charming stone cottages (circa 1788) 

either side, and Kiln Gardens on the left, into 

Hough Square. Continue up the tree lined 

Bethany Lane. As the lane bends a panoramic 

view of Newhey quarry can be seen. Proceed 

past Bethany Farm (fresh eggs for sale at 

the gate) and past Barnards Farm Cottages, 

emerging again onto A640 Huddersfield Road. 

Take care crossing the road at this junction 

because of fast moving traffic. 

Go down Ogden Lane, observing the Stone 

Circle left, on towards Lane Bottom, then left up 

the ‘Private Road’ to Ogden Reservoir. Take the 

stone steps left and proceed along the reservoir 

banking, up the end steps and through a gap 

in the wall. Turn right and continue with the 

reservoir to your right and the Nature Reserve 

to your left, through a wooden gate. There is a 

stream to the right, but follow the path left, by 

the fence, then left over a stile. 


Proceed up the steps, bounded by trees either 

side, emerging after a steep climb at another 

stile, where a period of rest is recommended. 

Continuing up another steep incline, along 

the narrow field path, past a sink hole on the 

right, emerging at a stile onto a lane. Go left 

along this rough stoney bridleway. Observe 

panoramic views of Rochdale, and its surrounding 

hills, before you, & Crompton Moor 

to your left. Follow the waymarker sign, right, 

at the junction of Carr Lane, down the bedrock 

surfaced bridleway which then becomes paved 

with stone setts. Take care in wet conditions as 

this bridleway surface can be very slippy. There 

are many wildflowers along this stretch of lane; 

Foxgloves, Yellow Iris, Buttercup and Ox-eye 

Daisy. In contrast is the busy M62 motorway 

extending before you. 

The lane emerges at Tunshill House and 

Ashfield Farm. Cross the M62 road bridge and 

proceed down past Tunshill Golf Club. 

As the lane bends, follow a waymarker sign 

down a single width path and over the golf 

course. Be aware of the danger of driven golf 

balls and keep to the wall, right, before crossing 

the fairway to emerge at a stile, beyond which 

the path leads down past Hollingworth 

Academy emerging at the Waggon Inn, 

Butterworth Hall and Milnrow Library. 

OUR GROUP 

If you feel you want to get out more 

often for a walk in the local countryside, 

then come along to our weekly Walk and 

Talk Group. Our walks are designed for 

people of all abilities and ages, who wish 

to gain the health benefits, both physical 

and mental, from walking in a safe and 

social group. Based at Milnrow Library 

we meet every Monday (except Bank 

Holidays) from 9.30 am leaving out at 

10am. It is free and friendly and led 

by volunteer walk leaders. Children are 

welcome accompanied by responsible 

adults.

From The Archives 

As with many towns in the United 

Kingdom, Rochdale has a number 

of parks in which people can spend 

time with little cost. Stanney Brook, 

Denehurst and Hare Hill at 

Littleborough are amongst them but 

here I focus on three large parks in 

the borough, Broadfield, Falinge 

and Springfield. 

BROADFIELD PARK 

The 30 acres of land below Rochdale Parish 

Church were for many years’ glebe lands 

for the use of the parish priest and 

‘acceptable gentlemen’ who might wish to 

take the air. In the 19th century the area 

consisted of three gravel paths bordered 

by shrubs and flower beds. However, 

pressure mounted in the 18th century, 

especially from Liberals on the council, to 

purchase the land for a public park. The 

church stood firm at £600 an acre and the 

Tory party disagreed with the whole idea, 

believing that working people had no time 

for recreation. However, after the passing of 

the Vicarage Bill which gave more power to 

local authorities, a sale was agreed in 1868. 

THREE ROCHDALE PARKS 

The park was landscaped by Stansfield’s of 

Todmorden to include a lake and 

separate playgrounds for girls and for boys 

and on 1st August 1874 Broadfield Park 

was opened to the public. 

The oldest park in Rochdale, boundary 

walls were built in the early 20th century 

and the park extensively refurbished over 

the years to include a Victorian-style 

bandstand, bowling greens (1908) and 

further play areas for children. Broadfield 

also contains important town monuments, 

the statue of John Bright MP and a 

monument erected in 1900 to the 

memory of Rochdale’s dialect poets. Some 

of the stranger aspects of Broadfield Park’s 

history include the presence at one time of 

a large cannon, supposedly dating from the 

Crimean War which was known as Big 

Bertha. Before it was taken away to be 

used as metal for the war effort in the early 

1940’s it stood near to what became the 

nurse’s home, now a hotel. Elsewhere in 

the park is the large boulder (I was always, 

wrongly, told that it was a meteorite) found 

at Crown Top in Castleton and presented 

to the corporation and at one time near 

St Albans Street there was allegedly a 

tombstone to a dog which had been owned 

by Miss Harriot Drake daughter of a former 

vicar at the Parish Church. 

FALINGE PARK 

An estate of 18 acres between Falinge 

Road and Sheriff Street had been owned 

by the Royds family since 1799 with Mount 

Falinge mansion at its centre built in early 

19th century by James Royd who lived in 

it until subsequent generations of Royds 

took it over.

In the early days the house, which had 

been a political centre for liberalism, was 

offered for sale in the 1860’s but it was not 

until the early 20th century that the entire 

estate was sold. Samuel Turner, one of the 

brothers who went on to transform TBA 

from its beginnings as a cotton mill, had 

started negotiations with the Royds family 

in the 1890’s to purchase Mount Falinge 

estate, including mansion, outbuildings 

and grounds. Unoccupied since 1891, the 

house was by that time run down and 

Turner, the mayor of Rochdale in 1902, 

settled on ‘a rather stiff price’ with Albert 

Hudson Royds but after securing the sale 

he presented it as a park to the town. It 

has been estimated that it cost Turner 

£20,000 plus a donation of £2500 towards 

the £9000 cost of fencing and park lay-out. 

The large conservatories and 4 or 5 vine 

houses needed repair but a decision was 

made to demolish many of the outbuildings, 

stables and other buildings instead and 

convert part of the mansion for use as a 

museum and art gallery. 

Following a procession from the Town 

Hall, the park was opened to the public 

on 5th August 1905 by Samuel Turner 

with a golden key ‘for the benefit of the 

inhabitants of the borough.’ An old 

bandstand which was built, burnt down 

and later rebuilt saw bands playing there 

for many years, latterly under the auspices 

of the Friends of Falinge Park. 

Eventually the mansion was demolished, 

leaving only the sealed façade that can be 

seen to this day, a sad end to a long 

Rochdale heritage. 

SPRINGFIELD PARK 

Springfield Park located between Rochdale 

and Heywood is the town’s largest park. 

The Borough’s General-Purpose Committee 

was authorised in 1914 to acquire from 

Mr J Davenport the Springfield Estate 

(Springfield House, Springfield Farm and 

adjoining buildings) in order to establish 

a tuberculosis sanitorium as part of an 

anti-consumption crusade, although by 

1924 it was in use as a maternity hospital. 

Further negotiations and expansion went 

on through the 1920’s with the development 

of tennis courts, bowling green and a 

9-hole putting course. The Mere pastures 

and 6 acres from Mereside Farm were 

purchased in 1925 enabling schools to use 

land for sporting activities. When 44 acres 

of Marland Fold Farm became available a 

local benefactor, Frederick Lye, stepped 

up (literally) to the tee. Lye, a successful 

business man had already bequeathed land 

for playing fields at Firgrove and Lenny 

Barn but was a keen golfer so with the help 

of a £2000 loan from the Ministry of Health 

bought land which he gave to the borough 

in order to build a municipal golf course in 

the park which was opened in April 1927. 

Springfield Park continues to be popular 

with its ‘Fishpond’, its miniature railway, 

its running track, playing fields, golf course 

and tennis courts, all adding a further 

aspect to Rochdale’s rich recreational 

environment.

Summer 

Pudding 

INGREDIENTS 

5/6 slices of white bread 

– a little stale is good. 

1 ½ lbs of mixed fruit 

(currants, raspberries, strawberries, 

stoned cherries, gooseberries etc) 

4-6 oz granulated sugar (to taste) 

METHOD 

1. Remove crusts from the bread and cut to 

fit the bottom of a 1 ½ pint pudding bowl. 

Arrange slices to line the sides of the bowl, 

cutting if necessary to ensure a tight fit. 

Reserve some bread for the middle and 

the lid. 

2. Put fruit and sugar in a pan and cook on a 

low heat for 10-15 minutes, until the fruit is 

soft but still holding its shape. Cool a little 

and adjust sweetening if necessary. Half 

fill the bread lined bowl, place on a layer 

of bread and then fill with the fruit. Cover 

with a lid of bread and spoon juice over 

to cover and fill the bowl. Place a plate on 

top of the filled bowl and weight down. 

Refridgerate. 

3. The summer pudding can be turned out 

and served when well chilled and all the 

bread is soaked and coloured with juice. 

They can be frozen in their bowls at this 

point. Allow to defrost completely before 

turning out.

to a special horse-racing themed event hosted at the famed Nutters restaurant.

Ladies Day Luncheon at celebrity chef Andrew Nutter’s award-winning restaurant, 

offering up their own table on social media for followers to nominate a worthy cause. 

“As lead sponsors of the event we wanted to make it an extra special day and decided 

to let the community choose who most deserved to be our guests,” said Revilo Group 

managing director Lee Collins. 

“We had dozens of nominations - all of them very worthy indeed - but Jenny’s name

Jenny, who lives in Rochdale, was diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago. She was 

chauffeur-driven to the event, where she enjoyed a three-course lunch and 

entertainment with three friends, all in aid of the Rochdale NSPCC.

Ray of Sunshine award 

for volunteering couple 

Springhill Hospice received 

a very special visit this week 

from BBC Northwest. 

Two volunteers at the hospice, Carole and Roger 

Dawson, were nominated for a Ray of Sunshine 

award. Their daughter Hazel was the one who 

nominated them for the award. The dedicated 

couple were nominated for all the voluntary work 

they do, along with the work they do out in 

the community. 

The Ray of Sunshine award has been created in honour of BBC Northwest presenter, Dianne 

Oxberry, who sadly passed away earlier this year. The awards have been presented to those who have 

helped others, their community, or just generally lit up the lives of others around them. 

Roger is a driver for Springhill’s Day Hospice. He picks up patients and brings them to Day Hospice. 

Carole volunteers around the hospice and in Day Hospice alongside being an active fundraiser for 

Springhill. They have both been volunteers at the hospice for many years. 

Julie Halliwell, Hospice Chief Executive said “It is so lovely that, Roger and Carole’s daughter Hazel 

has nominated them for this special award. It’s been quite difficult keeping Hazel’s nomination a 

secret. Our volunteers are so special to us, whether they work within the Hospice itself, out in the 

gardens, in our retail departments, or in the community in patients own homes. Our Hospice simply 

would not survive without our wonderful volunteers”. 

Springhill volunteers have recently been granted 

the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the 

highest award a voluntary group can receive in 

the UK, and will be going to Gorton Monastery in 

August to receive their award.
