“exposure”? Who is seen? Who is acknowledged?<br />

Who is empowered? Who is elevated?<br />

Whose name gets repeated? Who has <strong>the</strong> potential<br />

to earn prizes or opportunities? How do you<br />

protect yourself from being co-opted? How do<br />

you prevent yourself from becoming corrupt?<br />

• Who is harmed by your work being in <strong>the</strong><br />

world? Who is disempowered by <strong>the</strong> work?<br />

What stereotypes are upheld? Who is portrayed<br />

negatively? Who is at risk? Who is <strong>the</strong><br />

most vulnerable to backlash or reprisals for<br />

<strong>the</strong> photographs being public? Who has rights<br />

to <strong>the</strong> images <strong>and</strong> who does not? What is your<br />

responsibility to protect your subjects? Who has<br />

a right to privacy?<br />

• What is <strong>the</strong> ecological impact of producing<br />

<strong>and</strong> distributing <strong>the</strong> work? What materials are<br />

being used? What travel is required <strong>and</strong> by whom?<br />

What is <strong>the</strong> risk of causing damage to <strong>the</strong> environment<br />

or causing stress to animals? What waste is<br />

produced? How can you ensure your values are<br />

also demonstrated throughout <strong>the</strong> process?<br />

• Who controls <strong>the</strong> narrative? Who is funding<br />

<strong>the</strong> work? What role do <strong>the</strong> participants or subjects<br />

play in deciding how <strong>the</strong>y are represented?<br />

How much influence do external parties have on<br />

what is photographed? What is your motivation<br />

in telling <strong>the</strong> story a certain way? What have you<br />

not seen?<br />

• How do you find allies? Who else is working<br />

toward similar goals or with similar interests?<br />

Where can you find communities of like-minded<br />

people? What strengths do you have to offer<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs? What are you lacking that o<strong>the</strong>r people,<br />

communities, or organizations may have? How<br />

can collaboration amplify your message?<br />

• What resistance or criticism is expected?<br />

Who has a vested interest in <strong>the</strong> status quo?<br />

What forces keep existing systems in place? What<br />

effect could disruption have on <strong>the</strong> world? How<br />

can you prepare for <strong>and</strong> mitigate criticism? What<br />

approach would best help to reduce resistance?<br />

• Who has <strong>the</strong> power to decide where <strong>the</strong>se<br />

photos are seen <strong>and</strong> in what context? Which<br />

gatekeepers can prevent your work from being<br />
