the fancy church building right away, but to
build a more permanent school and then design
a worship center that could be converted to
other uses in the future.”
“God really took care of us in our ignorance,
because the original plan for the sanctuary only
provided seating for 1,100. If we had built it, we’d
have this elaborate building and not enough space.”
The worship center which was finally
approved, includes seating for 1,200 and is
designed to ultimately be converted to a multipurpose
fellowship hall.
Thompson’s vision for the new campus was
imprinted throughout the final plan.
“My dream was that, one, it looked like it
belonged in the hill country of Texas, two, that
it looked like a campus and had a campus
atmosphere, and, three, that it had a contemporary
Mexican look to it, with arches and
other elements that you might call typical San
Antonio style.”
According to Thompson, Overland Partners
worked out a unique ratio of stone and stucco,
approximately thirty percent stone and seventy
