life
By Thomas Grillo
No wonder Marianne Supino believes
in miracles.
In two weeks, the 61-year-old
Lynnfield resident will receive her
second life-saving kidney transplant.
It was made possible by a
stranger, a Lynn native who operates
the Lynnfield Children’s
Center just a few miles from
Supino’s home.
Tina Morris saw Supino’s post on
Facebook earlier this year seeking
a kidney and said she decided to
be a donor as her 50th birthday
approached.
While the two did not know each
other, they do now.
“I asked myself, what’s my next
step, how do I want to be remembered?”
she said. “This is my way
of giving back.”
While Morris and Supino were
not a match for the transplant, it was
still good news. Under the National
Kidney Exchange Peer Program,
Morris donated her kidney to a
stranger in Colorado last month.
The surgery went well, and she was
back to work in a week, she said.
As a result it expanded Supino’s
donor list.
Last week, Supino received what
she called a surprise call from
Massachusetts General Hospital.
“They found a kidney for me,” she
said. “I’m still catching my breath.”
total number, eight taxpayers
A stranger’s kindness; a new lease on life
SUPINO
FROM PAGE 1
Her surgery is scheduled for
Wednesday, Aug. 28.
The kidney’s main function is
to filter and remove waste, minerals
and fluid from the blood
by producing urine. We have
two, but it appears only one is
needed and the second can be
donated. When kidneys lose
this filtering ability, harmful
levels of fluid and waste accumulate
in the body, which can
raise blood pressure and result
in kidney failure. The so-called
end-stage renal disease occurs
when the kidneys have lost
about 90 percent of their ability
to function normally.
The history of kidney transplantation
is one of unsuccessful
setbacks, but also of
perseverance and pioneering
spirit, according to the U.S.
National Library of Medicine.
In 1939, the first transplantation
from a deceased human
donor was done by Dr. Y urii
V oronoy in the Soviet Union.
The patient survived for only a
few days, and the organ never
worked because the blood types
were mismatched.
Then in 1954, a milestone was
made with the first long-term successful
kidney transplantation by
Dr. Joseph Murray of Peter B ent
B righam Hospital, now B righam
& Women’s Hospital in B oston.
The transplantation was done between
twins.
For his efforts, Murray received
the Nobel Prize in medicine
in 1990.
For Supino, the transplant
is familiar territory. At 15, she
discovered her kidney problems.
While a high school student,
a biopsy revealed there
was something wrong with the
filtering system in her kidney.
“I hung onto that kidney for
nearly a decade because I slowed
the disease with medication and
didn’t even need dialysis,” she recalled.
At age 23 , she underwent
a successful kidney transplant at
Massachusetts General Hospital
and life was good, she said.
The new kidney worked
well for 30 years. B ut that all
changed in the summer of 2012
when at her Y ork, Maine vacation
home, she couldn’t walk a
straight line and was unable to
swallow pills.
“I thought I had Lyme disease,”
she said. “I was throwing
up and my head was hurting.
I was rushed to the ER at a
hospital in Y ork, and a CT
scan showed I had a serious
problem. I was rushed to Mass.
General for emergency brain
surgery and spent 45 days in the
new Y awkey cancer treatment
building.”
While the surgery and a combination
of chemotherapy and
radiation removed the tumors,
making her cancer-free, the one
drawback was she had to stop
taking the drugs to keep her
transplanted kidney in top shape.
“Once I had the brain surgery,
I had to stop my drugs to keep
my transplanted kidney going,
so I had to let the one kidney
go,” she said.
Within eight months, Supino
was on dialysis. The time consuming
process removes waste,
salt and extra water to prevent
them from building up in the
body and keeping a safe level of
certain chemicals in your blood,
such as potassium, sodium and
bicarbonate. She is at a Wakefield
clinic four times a week for about
three hours each day.
She’s been cleared for a
second transplant and in April
began the search for a donor.
“My doctors told me to let
the world know I need a kidney
and that’s why I am shaking all
the trees on social media and
pounding the pavement to get
the word out,” she said.
Today, there are more than
93 ,000 people on the kidney transplant
waiting list and that number
is growing, according to the
Living Kidney Donors Network.
Patients are prioritized by
how long they’ve been on the
waiting list, their blood type,
immune system activity and
other factors. About 80 percent
of the people on the waiting
list are on kidney dialysis. The
longer a person is on dialysis
and has to wait for a transplant,
the short and long term success
rates are negatively affected.
On average, receiving a kidney
transplant can double someone’s
life expectancy.
While 80 percent of
Amercians say they would be
an organ and tissue donor, only
about 35 percent designate
themselves as donors on their
driver’s licenses or on state
donor registries. For those who
don’t designate themselves as
a donor, the decision to donate
rests with their families who
can just as easily deny rather
than permit the hospital’s request
to have their loved one’s
organs donated.
A staggering 5,000 people die
every year waiting for a kidney
transplant and another 5,000 are
taken off the list because they
are no longer healthy enough to
receive one.
For Supino, it’s a life-altering
dream come through.
“I am so grateful,” she said.
“I’ve been blessed twice.”
OPEN SORE IN THE STOMACH LINING
While some people believe stress or spicy foods cause gastric
ulcers, these are only factors that can worsen symptoms. More
than 90 percent of ulcers are caused by a bacteria called H. pylori
which resides in the stomach. This bacterial cause of ulcers can be
effectively treated with a one-to-two-week course of antibiotics.
Diagnosis involves undergoing a simple lab test that detects
antibodies to the bacteria in the blood and a breath test that will
reveal the presence of the bacteria in the stomach. Once a proper
diagnosis is made, the antibiotic treatment effectively cures this
chronic problem. Medications include amoxicillin (Amoxil),
clarithromycin (Biaxin), metronidazole (Flagyl), tinidazole (Tindamax),
tetracycline (Tetracycline HCL), and levofloxacin (Levaquin).
Treatment for ulcers is often successful and lead to healing. But
if your symptoms are severe or if they continue despite treatment,
your doctor may recommend endoscopy to rule out other possible
causes for your symptoms. It’s never too late to become an
informed consumer about your health. At VILLAGE PHARMACY,
we are more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
For more information, please call 781-334-3133. We are located in
the Colonial Shopping Center and open Mon.-Fri., 9-7; Sat. 9-3;
and Sun. and holidays, 9-1:30.
HINT: While the most common gastric ulcer symptom is burning
stomach pain, nearly three-quarters of people with peptic ulcers do
not have symptoms.
Girls basketball falls one game short
By Anne Marie Tobin
DANVERS — It may have had to settle
for the North Shore Summer Basketball
League runner-up trophy, but the Lynnfield
High girls summer league basketball
team felt like a winner despite losing
Thursday night’s “if” game to Pingree,
34-28, at the Holten-Richmond School.
“I was really impressed by the level of
play we brought tonight,” said captain
Tori Morelli (10 points). “We lost, but
it didn’t feel like losing at all, it was so
much more positive because most years
we would lose our first games and be out
right away, so to be here playing in the
final was incredible for us.”
“There was so much more dedication
this year compared to last year and the
year before, so, yes, even though we
didn’t win, we felt we won as a team,”
said captain Missy Morelli.
Lynnfield jumped out to a 7-3 lead
about eight minutes in, but scored only
five points the rest of the half - a pair
of buckets by captain Missy Morelli (6
points) and Bella George (4 points) sandwiched
around a Grace Klonsky free
throw to trail 16-12 at the half.
Pingree came out fast in the second
half, building a 20-12 lead just three minutes
in. Morelli free throw, a steal and fast
break hoop by Klonsky (5 points) and an
Ava Buonfiglio three-pointer pulled the
Pioneers to within three, 21-18 with 13
minutes to play, but that was as close as
they came the rest of the way.
“We had to forfeit so many games in past
years because we never had enough girls
come,” said Klonsky. “But this year, I have
to acknowledge all these girls who signed
up to play and came every game it seemed.”
Pingree 44, Lynnfield 25
The Pioneers trailed by just two at halftime,
22-20, but ran out of gas in the second
half to force the “if” game.
Melissa Morelli had a strong all-around
game and finished with 10 points and
eight rebounds, while sophomore Riley
Hallahan was a beast on the boards, finishing
with 10 rebounds and nine points.
“Missy played her heart out tonight and
Riley was so strong on the boards when
she was in there and I didn’t want to take
her out to be honest,” said assistant coach
Jessica Ricupero. “We needed to box out
more and needed more communication to
help each other out against that defense.”
Lynnfield took its first (and only) lead
of the game at 4-3 a little more than four
minutes in on a pair of Morelli free throws.
The Highlanders went on a 9-4 run to
lead 13-8 with about seven minutes to
go in the half. A power baseline drive by
Morelli cut the deficit to 13-10. Hallahan
answered a Pingree three with a couple of
her own to make it 18-16. Junior Caroline
Waisnor made it 18-17 with a free throw,
then after a Pingree bucket, Morelli converted
an old-fashioned three-pointer to
tie the game at 20-20.
After that, it was all Pingree, which outscored
the Pioneers 24-5 to close out the
game and force a winner-take-all final.
Waisnor finished with four points,
while George had two.
Ava Buonfiglio drained a three-pointer with 13 minutes to go to pull Lynnfield
to within three in the summer league title game last week, but that’s as close as
the Pioneers got.

Junior golfers flock to King Rail
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — King Rail Reserve Golf Club was
the place to be Aug. 7 if you happen to be a junior golfer
looking for some serious competition.
The 27 entrants got that and more at the latest stop on
the New England Professional Golf Association’s (NEP-
GA) Junior Golf Tour, a tour that provides tournaments
for kids of all ages all across New England from early
April through late August.
This year’s tour includes 145 tournaments which
award points to the top finishers through Aug. 15. The
top point winners in each of six age divisions advance
to the NEPGA Jr. Tour Championship Aug. 22 at Fall
River C.C.
King Rail was the second Lynnfield golf course to host
a junior tour event this summer. Reedy Meadow Golf
Course previously hosted a field of 21 players in an
event in late June.
Tournament director Tom Manning, a rising sophomore
at Roger Williams University, says the tour has
something for everyone.
“It’s a great program that offers kids a chance to play
competitively and with 145 tournaments, kids have the
opportunity to play every day if they want,” he said.
“Most of our tournaments in Massachusetts, but we have
tournaments in Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont and New
Hampshire so there is plenty to choose from.”
Ben Madden of Wellesley turned in the day’s low
round. He shot an even-par 68 en route to winning the
boys 14-15 division.
North Reading’s Isabel Brozena shot a 6-over 74 to
post the low score for the girls, taking the girls 14-18
division by nine strokes over Stoneham’s Ava Lauria.
Stephen Forgione was Lynnfield’s top player; he shot a
10-over 44 and finished second in the boys 11-and-under
division. His brother, Michael, shot 51 to finish tied for
sixth.
For Dominic Meyers of Danvers, this was his 16th tour
event this summer.
“It’s great because you get to play with friends and you
also get to meet new people,” said Meyers, who finished
second in the boys 12-13 division with an 81.
“It’s better than just playing because it gives you the
real feeling of a tournament, which makes it more serious.”
Other tournament winners included Winthrop’s Jack
Sicurella, boys 16-18, 72; Winchester’s Max Lowenberg,
boys 14-15, 75; South Hamilton’s Seamus O’Holleran,
boys 11-and-under, 38, and Malerie Lague of Atkinson,
