Does <strong>Diversity</strong><br />

Really Matter?<br />

The first step that companies<br />

need to take is to assess how<br />

they can truly benefit from<br />

women employees. Once<br />

more females are added to<br />

the team, it can create a more<br />

diverse workplace. Apart from<br />

women, m<strong>in</strong>ority ethnic groups<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Asians and black<br />

people should be given roles<br />

contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the sector’s<br />

diversity. Is this really<br />

necessary?<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g with a group<br />

comprised of like-m<strong>in</strong>ded<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals will result <strong>in</strong>to<br />

homogenous th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. This<br />

means that there will be a<br />

limited perspective which<br />

h<strong>in</strong>ders the creation of fresh<br />

ideas. Hence, <strong>in</strong> order for a<br />

group to be effective, there<br />

should be bra<strong>in</strong>storm<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

different po<strong>in</strong>ts of view from<br />

people with different<br />

experiences and backgrounds<br />

based on their gender, age,<br />

and culture.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g a good balance<br />

between the number of male<br />

and female workers will help<br />

create a bigger picture when<br />

deal<strong>in</strong>g with issues and other<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess-related matters. For<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, males and females<br />

has vary<strong>in</strong>g approach to risks.<br />

Females are more careful and<br />

cautious. With this, their <strong>in</strong>puts<br />

about how to manage health<br />

and safety <strong>in</strong> construction sites<br />

would be beneficial.<br />

Surround<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>dustry with<br />

different people or with a<br />

diverse group will welcome<br />

more ideas and perspectives,<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry leaders more<br />

cognizant and receptive to<br />

other viewpo<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />
