The soft stuff
As well as being comfortable,
cushions and other soft furnishings
should be equipped to look good for the
long haul. “Think about innovative materials
that can stay outside 24/7,” says Adam.
“Look for cushions that are rated with
outdoor quick-dry foam and select slightly
darker fabrics as they’re more forgiving.”
Real estate rules
When selecting the location of your outdoor
room, landscape designer Adam Robinson
(adamrobinsondesign.com) suggests, “Have
it near the house for an easy flow and to
be close to facilities, or set it out among the
garden and allow yourself to be submerged

may want a large dining table, but if
you can’t walk around it comfortably,
it’s going to look cluttered.” Measure
your space and allow at least 1.2
metres of space around to allow
chairs to slide back and give access

than chairs, plus it can
be tucked under the table

Set your intent

“This will give you an idea of what size,
style, shape and material the pieces of
furniture should be,” says Adam. With

lighting so you can keep the party
going after dark. Weatherproof
downlights are useful in a covered
patio area, while outdoor wall lights
cast an elegant glow and can also add
visual impact to surfaces such as
feature walls. Don’t forget to consider
seasonal changes – gas heaters or fire
pits are great for adding warmth on
cooler evenings, while

perfect for sudden
changes in weather.
