NPD agrees to meet residents<br />

upsetaboutthe sitingofaselfservice<br />

petrol stationinthe<br />

heart of the<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

town.<br />

theprotest overplanstosite<br />

thestation on aformer<br />

shoppingcentre site,handed<br />

over petitionsopposingthe<br />

siting to the HurunuiDistrict<br />

Council lastweek.<br />

Mr Trewinnardsaid NPD<br />

hadindicated it would meet<br />

with himand othersopposed<br />

to thesiting.The meeting is<br />

scheduled fornextweek.<br />

In response to aquestion<br />

from MayorWinton Dalley, he<br />

said thepetitioners werenot<br />

askingthe council to do<br />

anythingatthisstage until<br />

they had metwith NPD.<br />

At thatstage, if NPD chose<br />

to be ‘‘heroic and listen, and<br />

change its plan’’, thenthe<br />

council couldbeinvolved.<br />

Mr Dalleysaid thecouncil<br />

wouldbehappytohave a<br />

conversationwith the<br />

company. ‘‘Youcould take that<br />

as agiven. In themeantime,<br />

we willwait to hear back.’’<br />

Mr Trewinnardtold<br />

councillors nearlyhalfthe<br />

adult populationofAmberley,<br />

878, had signed his online<br />

petition,while apaper<br />

petition circulated by Mrs<br />

Welch had around80<br />

signatures.<br />

outside of Amberley,including<br />

Australia, but allhad an<br />

interest in the township or had<br />

lived there.<br />

and clearmessagetothe<br />

council.‘‘Please do not ignore<br />

us,’’ he said.<br />

The petitioners criticised<br />

the council’sdisconnectwith<br />

the district’s residents,saying<br />

the resource consent forthe<br />

stationshould havebeen<br />

publicly advertised.<br />

centre­stage in itsprocesses<br />

River and distribute it to<br />

farmers through 100<br />

kilometres of pipeline.<br />

saidatthe time it was seen<br />

as an opportunity to<br />

showcase efficient<br />

irrigation and<br />

environmental<br />

responsibility.<br />

It had been the<br />

culmination of alot of hard<br />

work by its backers over<br />

many years.<br />

Amberley, he said, should be<br />

treatedasacommunityinits<br />

own right, notasaservice<br />

townasithad been in thepast.<br />

Motunau book to launch<br />

Hooked on Motunau,ahardcovered<br />

album capturingthe<br />

culture and history of the<br />

beachsettlement,will be<br />

launched in mid­November.<br />

The album has 410 silksatin,<br />

art­infused pages of<br />

photos and material from<br />

1840 to 1980, and is the work<br />

of Julie Brown.<br />

Julie, awriter and fourthgeneration<br />

bach­holder at<br />

the beach, was<br />

commissionedbya<br />

pioneering family to write<br />

and compile the album of<br />

archivedmaterial, anecdotes<br />

and verbalhistory of the<br />

settlement and its environs.<br />

She has beenhumbled by<br />

the supportfor the album,<br />

whichcontains history<br />

sourced from many<br />

pioneering families, current<br />

resident and bachowners. It<br />

includes acompilation of<br />

photos, stories and<br />

anecdotes.<br />

The launchwill be on<br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> Show weekend,<br />

on Sunday, November 17, at<br />

Motunau Beach.<br />
